SHAW Announces to bis friends and pat rons that he .is prepared to furnish THE BEST GOODS. -AND GUARANTEES PERFECT FIT At prices lower than any out side or other competing Clothier or Tailor. Seldom has it been the pleasure of Americus to contain a finer body of men than the representaUres to the Grand Lodge of the Knight! of Honor, who are now in the city. Most of them arrived Tuesday, but the train yesterday brought in several who were delayed. The organization Is one too well known to need comment, and knowing the kind of men who compose the lodge here, all expected to see a fine body of men to represent the others of the state. And their expectations wero than realized. In all there are something over a hun dred delegates, and every one is a man of whom any community would be proud. They are lino lookin men, and men who boar the stamp of intelligence on their countenances. Upon their arrival they were taken in charge by the reception committee, and escorted to the various stopping places where arrangements had alroady been made. Tlie first meeting was in the form of a reception, beginning at 0 o'clock yester day morning in the lodge room in the Masonic Temple. Ry the appointed hour all the Knights were on hand, and a number of others, both ladies and gentlemen, from the city were also present. Mr. M. Callaway was called to the chair, and the exorcises were opened with prayer by Itev. M. K. Milner. Maj. W. L. Glessner then delivered a short, but exceedingly entertaining ad dress of welcome, and warmly expressed this sentiment in well choson words. The reply was made by the Hon. John P. Shannon, of Elbcrton, who delighted all hearers with ills effort. He is an ele gant speaker, and impressed all presont with his fluency and eloquence. It was a treat which those absent greatly re gretted missing. . Music was furnished hv Prof. Kaler’s orchestra, and the reception was made most pleasant for all. After this, the order withdrew, and held a session for business. An after noon session w as also held. At night the guests and many citizens again gathered at the lodge room and engaged in social intercourse for several hours. It was in the form of a citizens reception, and right well did they turn, out. In an adjoining room was spread one of the best lunches ever seen in the city, and Schmidt, the popular caterer, who did the work, scored another big success. All. wero delighted with the refresments, there being the greatest sufficiency of good things of the very best quality. Impromptu speeches were made by Uon. J. P. Shannon, of Elbcrton, Hon. H. H. Cab-nlis, of Atlanta, Dr. Andrews, of Washington, Dr, H. B. Ncsbit, of Eatonton, Col. Cleve Johnson, of Allan ta, Dr. L. S. Ledbetter, of Cedartown, and Mr. M. Callaway, of this city. The evening was spent in a manner THE WORft PROGRESSING . i : -;. t i And this. A.* M. Will •» CmapMe* to Montgomery la Jane. The people of Americus and of South west Georgia will be glad to learn that all doubt, if doubt there had been, of the early completion of the Savannah, Americus and Montgomery road to Montgomery, Ala., hat leon dispelled, and that trains will bo running Into that eity within sixty days. Information received from President Hawkins, who it still in New York, la to the effect that lie has recently placed bonds of the road to the amount of near ly a half million dollars, thus providing ample funds for the prosecution of the work of building now in hand. In view of this fact the force at work upon the extension io Alabama lias been augmentoJ by the addition, recently, of 500 men, which, with those already en gaged upon the work, makes a foree of nearly 1,500 laborers between the Chatta hoochee river and Alabama's capital city. Mr. W. E. Hawkins, assistant to the president, has recently returned from a visit to flnrtsboro and other points along the line of the new road. lie re ports everything as progressing rapidly, and thinks that thorn is no doubt what ever but that the S. A. & .M. will reach Montgomery early in June. These are the Leadin Movements. ■ - : “ ’S Their reputation circles the globe. Watches of all makes and-grades, sold on easy terms. Join our WATCH CLUB. A Uvely Banket. A popular dry goods clerk of Ameri cus has been overflowing with exuber- tant happiness the past few days on ac count of receiving an exquisite basket of flowers from an unknown source. Ac- companing the gift was an anonymous poem, written in a lady's hand, and brimming over with elegant sentences of love for the recipient. Rhyme and rhythm were perfect, the flowers be- young compare, and these so well accord- ed^with the ardent sentiment, that ’Us no wonder the young gentleman's heart beat happy, responsive echoes. Finding a third party who knew the sender, this proud gallant purchased last night a delightful box of crystalized fruit, and through tills mutual friend sent it to the urfknown beauty. No doubt he spent many sleepless hours last night imagining how delight ed the fair one would be with the candy, .and how her eyes would sparkle with joy and love. All this and more, in all probability, passed through his mind, and at the same time two wicked young men, with poetic and joking instinct, were merrily and happily munching erystalized violets and composing anoth er poem. Sbme time to-day the first young gen tleman's dream of delight will melt away into the sad reality of a practical joke. . DIAMONDS! SOLD ON INSTALLMENTS. Consult your interest and call on me. JAS. T.
