AFTERNOON. • Til* Crop In Southwest Georgia This Yeer Will be an Average One. Mr. D. B. {Itll la just back from a visit to bis extensive melon farm In Lee county, near Smlthvllle, and says that the crop this year, while late, will be fully up to the average. Mr. Hill has nearly a hundred, acres planted In melons, averaging 320 hills to the acre, and so advanced are the small vines that in a week or two they will be large enough to run. There will be mill ions of melons. Strange as it may seem, mice are said to be one of the greatest posts of the melon raisers, and every night, Mr. Hill says, hundreds of these little pests may be seen scampering over the field and burrowing into the melon hills for the seed, which they devour with avidity. Last season Mr. Hill, to rid his Holds of mice, put out several buckets of pois oned dough one night, and early next morning he and the plantation overseer hauled off twenty-sovon coon dogs that had come to the feast, the property of the neighbors and farm hands. Bnt It corneccd the rat business for a while. With favorablo seasons from this time on the yield of melons will be large, and the usual volume of gold dollars will be poured into the coffers of the luoky hus bandman as a reward of his industry. Melon raising in Southwest Georgia has already assumed large proportions, and each succeeding season the acreage de voted to tbla mqpt profitable business is being greatly increased. Work at Andersanvllle. Capt. I. D. Crawford, of Jones Post G. A. R. at Macon, has charge of the im provements which are being made by the Grand Army at Andersonvllle, and reports work progressing with rapidity and in a good manner. Already a great deal has been accomplished and a number of hands are now at work. Hedges have been put around the old wells dug by the prisoners when In search of water, to prevent caving in and thus losing interesting relics. Three bridges have been built over the creek, and carriages and buggies can now be driven over the entire grounds. The othor great Improvements decided upon are being pushed, and in a few months the old stockade will be trans formed Into a beautiful park, with all the old evidences of prison life pre served. JAS.
