THE AMER1CUS DAILY TIMES-RECORDER: SATURDAY, APRIL 18, 1891.
OOOI> TIKE TO COME.
The Papll. mud Teacher, of the Public
School, Complimented.
The board of education held tnelr
monthly meeting yesterday evening in
the office of the president, Major M.
Speer.
The members of the board were in
excellent good humor. The report of
the superintendent made every one pres
ent feel good and be proud of the suc
cess of the schools.
To let the citizens of Americas and
the people of the state know what this
city is doing for the education of the
masses, the following data from the su
perintendent's report are given:
Number of pupils matriculated—
1,512.
Enrollment in Jackson street school—
636.
Enrollment in McKay hill school—813.
Total enrollment to date—1,449.
Attendance this week in Jackson street
school was 525, and in McKay hill school,
581.
Ever since the opening of the schools,
the attendance has been excellent in
every grade of all departments, the seats
being every day occupied by pupils.
The board of education felt that the
school children and the teachers should
be encouraged in their well doing, and
decided that, although the white schools
were four weeks late at the fall opening,
a week’s vacation be given to the schools
from April 25th to May 3rd.
Another reason for the coming vacar
tiou is that the pupils have advanced In
their studies nearly as much as if they
had been taught tho full number of
weeks.
The vacation will give the teachers an
opportunity to attend the State Teach
era’ Association, which will meet in
Brunswick from April 28th to May 1st
• The generosity of the board of educa
tion could not fail to receive the en
dorsement of The Times-Recohder,
and for this timely and wise action the
board will no doubt be thanked by the
tmehers, the pupils and the parents.
