J THE AMERICUS DAILY TlMES-RECORDERt TUESDAY. APRIL 21. I SOI. SKI JOHNS. SHAW, SPARE THE BRDTES. HAVE THEIR PERSECUTORS LOOKED AFTER. Amerlci • should Hum a Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to the Animal.— Many Eaampleaof Torture Dally Seen on the Streets. "THE CHAMPION” Clothier & Outfitter, 117 Foreyth Ht\ A merlons, Ga.. Is prepared to clothe the people of Americus and vicinity; in fact whole of Southwest Ga. with That is correct in style and perfect in lit. Every garment is made by the largest New York and other mann- ufaeturtrs up to the highest standard of art. No clothing house South of At lanta can boast of such an admirable assortment of MEXS, YOUTHS, BOYS & CHILDREN’S In our lino of business wo are the recognized -leaders, and we propose to continue to carry off the honors. While we possess all the requisites necessary for the success of a legiti mate and dashing business, WE HAVE THE LARGEST AND FINEST STORE IN THE CITY. AVE HAVE THE LARGEST AND FINEST STOCK IN THE CITY, anil we are known throughout this section as the Wliat Americus needs now, and for that matter has long needed, Is a society for the prevention of cruelty to ani mals. There is, perhaps, not a reader of The Times-Rbcobdbu in this city who has not at soma time seen the greatest of cruelty inflicted upon dumb brutes, whereas, had there been a society here for the protection of these poor animals, the mere fact of Its existence would have deterred the human brute from wantonly inflicting torture upon the helpless creature which ho was mal treating. In fact, hardly a day passes but that there is some flagrant violation of the lawB of humanity perpetrated right here in Americus, and for which there is no redress. Not long since, on Forsyth street, a burly negro belabored a poor mule over the head with a club until the animal fell to the ground, where for luite a long while it lay helpless and un able to rise. The black brute merely laughed at ids diabolical deed, and when the poor animal Anally staggered to Its feet the lash was again applied os the human devil drove off home. Scores of crimes equal to the above could be cited, many of which are per petrated right here every day, and which would disgust even a Zulu war rior. Were there a society here whoso business it would be to punish these miscreants, untold suffering would be spared numbers of poor horses, mules and other animals, while the chalngang would be graced by many who havo es caped too long. In Savannah tlio society for the pre vention of cruelty to animals proposes to wago war this summer on the check rein, and the samo ought to bo dono here,if tjiore was such a society to look after the matter. The members claim that it is the height of cruelty to have a horse tightly checked at any timo, but more particu larly during the warm season. Many people have a habit of letting horses stand in front of stores for a half hour and longer at a timo with their heads checked, and this, the society says, will have to be stopped. If these parties havo not humanity enough to loosen their horses by persuasion a little law will bo tried. It is possible that the society may ask the city council to frame an ordinance on the check rein question. Then and Now. till. tor many ied to take able bins pill.
