Life. “Hike to do a little block bass fish ing now and then,” sold Dr. Tompkins, of Penn Yon, “but Pm not one ol those enthusiastic people who can’t get along without it. The other' day, though, a friend of mine came in with a fine catch of baas, and the sight of them rather put me inthehnmorof going ont and getting a lot myself. “What did yon catch 'em with?" I asked my frienij. “Crabs,” he said. “We call crawfish ’crabs' in Penn Van. I had heard before that crabs were good bait for black bass, and think ing that I might get some fun out of them as well ns anybody elso I went over to Lake Kenka outlet to bait. 1 banged around in the creek for three hours turning up stones and slopping about in the water knee deep, and suc ceeded in capturing five littlo crabs. “ 'Well,' I said to myself, ’that isn’t a vary big lot of bait to start on a day’s fishing with, but I guess I won't have any trouble getting two or three nice bass, anyhow,' “I was about [eating the ereek when I met a small hoy. He was a Penn Ynn small boy and ho had nerve, and he hailed me familiarly and said: “ 'Hullo, mister. What yon after?* “1 told him I was gathering crabs for bait, but that they were powerful scarce. “ ‘What’ll you give mo to get yon some?’ inquired the small boy. “I thought it would he a nice thing to have a conple of dozen or so of crabs, for I'd want to bo going ont after more bass the next day, and knowing what a tough and tedious lime I'd lmd getting only five, I thought I'd make it worth the boy's while spending a day tugging and sweat ing among the stones, and so I said I'd give him five cents apiece for crabs. “ ‘How many ’ll I git you? 1 he asked. “ ‘Oh, all yon can,’ I replied, feeling that all he could get would certainly be few enough. “ ‘AU right!’ he said, and I went np the lake a mile or so with my fivo crabs to get some bass for my snpper. I fished all the rest of the day and never got os mnch ns a bite. It was supper time when I pulled for home. “ ‘The next man that says crabs to me,’ I said to myself, 'it won't go well with.’ “After supper I was sitting in my office, feeling a little sore yet over my day's fishing, when a knock came to the door. I opened it, and there stood the small boy I had hired to gather crabs for me. I hod forgotten aU about him. “ ‘Hullo, mister!” he said. ‘I got some!' “Crabs were the very last thing I was hankering after jnst then, bnt of conrse a bargain waa a bargain. “ ‘AU right,’ I said. 'Fetch ’em in.’ “The small boy stepped aside and im mediately appeared again, accompanied by another smaU boy. Each boy tagged In a big tobacco pail. Each pail was fiUed with crabs. “ 'Great heavens!’ I exclaimed. ‘How many hays ytm got?* " ‘There’s two thonsan', mister,’ said the small boy I had bargained with. 'Bnt we'd ’a’ got a lot more if the pails had been bigger.' “Two thousand crabs! If yonll take the trouble to figure on that you'll find that at fire cents apiece 2,000 crabs will come to jnst on even $100, and that was the price per crab I had bonnd myself to pay. While those boys had nerve I’ve an idea that their ideas of financiering were crude, for after some exceedingly anxious and apprehensive argument with them I induced them to compromise on a basis of labor by the day, and even then they mado such a good thing ont of mo that the next man who mentions crabs to me will stand an excellent chance of having the price of that day's work taken ont of his hide. I returned those crabs to Kenka outlet, and any ono who wants to may go there and catch them—if they can."—Louisville Post. An Engineer Who Slept. The writer asked on old engineer the other day if ho had ever’while running a locomotive yielded to sleep. "No— weU, yes." bo answered. “Tliat is, it wasn’t a sleep, jnst n nodin sudden stop ping of everything and then an awaken ing with a start. I was so dead beat that it seemed to me ns if a thousand pound weight was pulling my eyelids down. Of conrse I fought it off, liut for just one second I gave in once. I waa looking alicad when suddenly I felt my head go down with u jerk. I don't think that that sleep lasted one-tenth of u second, bnt every sensation left my brain. It was as it it flashed ont and then back again. It is a sorry thing," ho added grimlv, "when engineers go to sleep in their cabs."—New York Tribune.
