Two policemen at her instigation took the coal heaver to tho station, hnt the super intendent declined to formnlate any charge against him. All she conid do, he told her, was to bring a civil action for the value of her dog. She left the station "apparently much dissatisfied with the decision."—Paris Cor. London Telegraph. All Watches Compasses. A few days ago I was standing by an American gentleman when I expressed swish to know which point was the north. Ho at once palled out his watch, looked at it, and pointed to the north. 1 asked him whether he had a compass attached to his watch. "All watches," lie replied, “are compasses." Then he explained to me how this was. Point the hour hand to the sail, and the south is exactly half way between tho lionr and the figure 13 on tho watch. For in stance, supposo that it is 4 o'clock. Point tiic hand indicating 4 to the sun and 2 on the watch is exactly south. Suppose that it is 8 o'clock. Point the hand indicating 8 to tho snn and the figure 10 on tho watch is duo south. My American friend was quite surprised that I did not know this. Thinking that very possibly I was ignorant of a tiling that every one else knew, and happening to meet Mr. Stanley, I asked that omi nent traveler whether ho wus aware of this simple mode of discovering the [Mints of the compass. Ho said that he had never heard of it. I presume, there fore. that the world is in tho same state of ignorance. Amalfi is proud of hnv ing been tho home of the inventor of the compass. I do not know what town boasts of my American friend os n citi zen.—London Truth. We can now say AVHOLESALE DRUGS, and as an evidence, call and examine our Stock and Prices. I sus pect that the reliable bat somewhat do- liber»te a ox satisfied-Ins ancestors. I met one farmer near Holyoke driving his cow home from the pasture on a bicycle —that is, the man was on a bicycle and the cow was ahead of him on foot, though she looked os if she would appre ciate a bicycle, too, aa he was speeding her along on a rather lively trot. I stop ped him and asked him if there was any show for a farmer to make money in that section, and while the patient cow leaned against a tree and canght her breath he replied that there was nona whatever. His grandfather had made money on tho form, he said, bnt he conid not Then he called to the cow to “bump her self," and went spinning down the road with the long suffering beast making desperate efforts to keep from being run over. It occurred to me that perhaps his grandfather did not pick the stones off the farm with a bicycle and a pair of tongs.—Cor. New York Tribune. The Massachusetts board of health has examined 78 sample* of water atad 838 samples of ice from 08 localities, with the result of showing that, contrary to general belief, ice may he nearly as lm- pure as the water from which it forma The crystallization of the water forces out the color, salt, and most of the mat ter in eolation, and clear lea from pol- luted sources may be comparatively free from imparities and the probability of hiding disease germs. Hut in snow ice and ice formed by flooding the imparities become entan gled, so that freezing gives no purifica tion. Thepublio is warned by the board, therefore, that ice ia unsafe for domestic purposes when obtained from apouroe liollnted bj^&ewage beyond that which would bo allowable in drinking water, and that in general it is much safer to use for drinking water and for placing in contact with food that portion of the ice that is clear.— Arltansaw Traveler.
