zen thinks he lias about reached a peri
od when he ought to he protected from

For the second time interest in the Ital
ian rumpus has died completely out.Tke
opinion is general that it will be a hard
matter for the Italians to answer Mr.
Blalnu'a last dispatch which is regarded
as that gentleman’s ablest state paper.
Editor Branham set the example o!
getting off some fearfully and wonder
fully constructed words, and now Editor
Bayne of Augusta, rallies with “A Fol-
laceous Fascicle." After this who will
dare impugn Yolapuk, Kickapoo and
Norse?
State Senator Ellington has written a
letter withdrawing from the race for
president of the State Alliance. It is
said Mr. Searcy, who is now in Florida,
will do the same thing. This will leave
Col. Livingston an open field, and his
election is a foregone conclusion.
The equilibrium of nature is preserv

The morals of the English army must
be at a very low ebb, when the crack
regiment in the service, the Grenadier
Guards, mutinies because the drills were
a little too numerous and fatiguing.
The English army appears to be made
up of dudes and loafers who are too
tired to drill.
Somebody advertised in Sunday's Sa
vannah News that a girl baby, two
months old, would be given to anybody
who would adopt her, and that a bonus
of $500 in cash would accompany her.
More than 100 answers were received by
Monday night, only one of which really
wanted the baby without the cash.
Editor Gantt is one of the most in
nocent And unsuspecting of laiuhs. He
Interviewed Postmaster-General Wanna-
maker In Atlanta recently, and that
smooth-tongued puritan gave the gentle
Larry so much taffy that he believes in
the political conversion of that dyed-in-
the-wool Republican. Hear 1dm in re’
gird to several obnoxious postmasters.
The germ or microbe theory is uow
the popular method for accounting for
all diseases, and a scientific gentleman
la Indiana lias discovered the “voting
microbe" and photographed it. It is
aald to have been freelv used by Blocks-
of-Five-Dudley in inoculating the Indi
ana voters in the last election: and its
physical appearance, according to the
photographs, is strikingly like a dollar
mark preceding the figure 2, only not so
regular; thus: $2. Trill/, the march of
science is startlingly wonderful, as well
as wonderfully startling.
According to a distinguished Demo
cratic congressman, who lias correspon
ded with most of the Democratic mem
bers elect, it has been determined to di
vide the principal otlices of the next
house, so as to give the speaker to the
south, and the clerk, door-keeper and
sergeant-at-arms to the north and west.
Mr. Crisp, according to the same au
thority, is now far in the lead for speaker,
and Mr. Kerr of Pennsylvania for clerk.
The Chicago Inter-Ocean has lately
devoted a good deal of its space to at
tacks against the penitentiary system of
Tennessee, Georgia and Alabama, and
described in the most lurid style the
brutal treatment to which convicts in
those states were subjected. According
to the Inter-Ocean 'the officials of the
penitentiaries in those states amused
themselves by shooting and beating the
prisoners to death. But iu devoting its
attention to imaginary abuses in tiie
SQUtb, the Inter-Ocean overlooks evils
quite near its own doors. Tiie atteu
tion of the Inter-Ocean is called to the
report of the legislative committee of
Minnesota regarding the Inhuman treat
ment of convicts In the penitentiary of
that state; how they were beaten over
the heads with clubs and hanged by the
wrUts for sixteen hours until they were
almost dead from pain and exhaustion.
This report would have been a delicious
morsel for the Inter-Ocean, had it ema
nated from a legislative committee of a
southern state, but unfortunately the
cowardly brutality referred to occurred
in the good Republican state of Minne
sota. Cruelty Is about the same the
world over, and politics never made s
cruel man less so. Neither is cruelty s

A QUESTION OF PRIVILEGE.
A few days .ago, when there were three
announced candidates for the presiden
cy of the Farmers’ Alliance and it look
ed like a free for-all-race was in order,
The Timkn-Hei order felt that in such
a nice Southwest Georgia should not be
left out, having a man living in Ameri-
cuh, in every way tiie equal, and in
many respects tiie superior, of some of
tiie avowed candidates. Hence the sug
gestion of the name of a suitable gentle
man for that position.
The Farmers’ Alliance composes the
hulk of the Democratic party of Geor
gia, and can and will control the legisla
tion and politics of the state.
Everybody is therefore vitally inter
ested iu the election of the best man
for the presidency of the Alliance,
w hich really means the head of the
Democratic and Anglo-Saxon party in
this state, in fact, w hatever it may be in
theory. Yet Editor Gantt, the self con
stituted dictator of the order, resents
any suggestions not originating with
himself, and N.iys, commenting on
Tiie Times-Rkcorder'h advocacy of
one of its worthy fellow townsmen,
that paper who were not connected
with the order, and men not members
of the order should not he nominating
officers for it."
If this be the platform of Editor Gantt.
The Timeh-Rki order has as good right
to suggest as lias tiie .Southern Alliance
Farmer, inasmuch as The Times-Hk-
C'oiidkr has a larger circulation among
alliancemen in the half dozen counties
adjacent here, and lias as good an al
lianceman as Editor Gantt or anybody
else on its editorial and business staff.
U these facta doi’t give The Times-
Recorder any privileges, pray where do
Editor Gantt and his "organ" come in?
The Timks-Hecorder doesn't seek to
pose as the “organ" of the Alliance, but
it has equal rights with Editor Gantt, if
there be any rights, and purposes to be
beard in its columns and in the lodge
rooms which a member of its staff is en
titled to enter, wherever any questions
of common interest to alliancemen and
non-alliancemen come up for discussion.
Does Editor Gantt see the point?
GEORGIA AT CHICAGO
It would bd a a rent mistake for Georgia
not to be represented At the World'* Fair,
and yet very lltt e It being done to have her
represented there. The enterprising men of
the state have a duty to perform In this mat
ter, mod the sooner they prepare for It, the
bettei. -Savannah News.
There is just one feasable, practicable
way for Georgia to he represented, in
the absence of her ability to have an ap
propriation out of the treasury made by
the legislature, and that Is in accordance
with the line suggested by The Times
Recorder to have the use of the direct
tax money which the general govern
ment will refund to the state.
This money comes to Georgia uow in
the legal light of a donation, and there
Is no obstacle In the way of its use by
the governor In any manner lie may see
fit, for the public good.
Let the people of Georgia indicate
their wishes as to his use of this fund,
and Tiie Times-Rkcouder bellevea the
money can be so applied.
If the statements of Mrs. Martin, now
on trial in Birmingham for murdering
her husband's brother, can bo substan
tiated, the blackest crime !r the calen
dar will shine out as one of, the cardinal
virtues by the side of that man's infamy.
It la charitable to humanity to hope that
the emotional insanity which Mrs. Mar
tin pleads as justifying her act, may
have so far beclouded her memory that
her statements regarding Martin are only
partially true, and that he is not so black
as she paints him. Unions some power
fully rebutting testimony is introduced,
Mrs. Martin will be cleared without a
moment's hesitation by the jury.
If there is anything in the .absolute
unanimity of the press not only of Geor
gia, but of the south, Tom Watson is
tiie most not down on man that ever
lived. The Augusta Chronicle is cruel
ly publishing a column at a time of tho
comments of tiie press on Tommy's
course, and unless his hide is remarka
bly tough, lie must feel keenly tha. he
has made an unqualified fool of himself.
But this is a good lesson to our verdant
young sprig of a congressman, that may
teach him more discretion in the future.
