Docs Jacksonville claim that Robinson Crusoe once lived in her midst? 8TRIKKS. The strike of the street car drivers in Detroit has assumed serious propor tions, the strikers being joined by several thousand men who are in sympa thy. The streets are barracaded in places, and travel completely suspended, as there are not enough policemen to protect the cars and the new men who take the strikers’ places Tills strike will probably end as all such affairs t^o, In disaster to the strikers, for, however cheap men may be forced to work, thero are always men whose necessities impel them to offer to work cheaper. As population grows denser the strug gle for bread becomes intensified, and it is a question of the survival of the fit test; that is, the man who can come the nearest to working for nothing and find ing himself.! This condition, which is commonly but erroneously called the fight of la bor against capital, is brought about by the congestion of population in the great cities, whereby there are ten men who need to earn their bread for every place that is open. ('under such conditions, the lowest bidder gets the place, and this continues until starvation wages arc reached, and a strike is the consequence. I Jut it is an error to suppose that capi tal always reaps a benefit from the low ering of wages. RUSSIA AND THK JEWS. From England the czar has received numerously signed petitions in regard both to the exile system and the perse cution of the Jews, and he is reported to have been greatly incensed and to have treated the victims of his displeas ure more harshly afterwards than be fore. And now thero is being prepared in this country a monster petition un der the direction of what is called the Siberian Exile petition association. Nearly 200,000 names have been signed already, and tiie intention is to obtain 300,000 more before the petition is final ly forwarded. And when the czar re ceives the petition he will probably toss it into his waste basket or return it unopened and hasten to sign the sentences of another batch of exiles. The more the world sees of the Ro manoffs, the raorO inevi able appears to be the unwelcome conclusion that the only hope for Russia lies imbedded iu a can of dynamite. It seems a well-nigh hopeless undertaking to seek to bring about reform through outsido infitience. The Russian autocrat is perhaps less amenable to such influence than any other human being. He is a bc’iever in the divine right and infallibility of kings. Unfavorable criticisms of bis methods by his subjects lie regards as troason. The latest report from Mary Ander- •son Navarro is that she is well and bap- jpy. She and her husband aro traveling rfer pleasure. And her “littlo lamb” is not yet following her wherever she goes, notwithstanding the extreme previous ness of the New York papers in so an nouncing. Judge Crisp is at home from Kansas City and Leavenworth laden with honors, and having a stronger assur ance than ever that the people of the west agree most heartily with the pcoplo of the south that the time has come when another Georgian into fill the speaker's chair. Major Peyton Randolph, vice-pres ident of the Richmond and Danvillo system, died in Richmond Thursday. He wsis one the most prominent railroad men in tho south, and was spoken of quite frequently of late In connection with the management of the Central railroad of Georgia. If there.is a single person in Georgia, old or young, man, woman or child, white or black, not iu favor of Judge Crisp’s election to the speakership, with the lonesome exception of poor little Tommio Watson, The Timks-Recohdeh hits so far failed to hear of him or her, after diligent inquiry. The name day she offered the reward 7«Sl> tneu called and told her they voted for her. capital to cut wages to save itself from bankruptcy. The returns for capital invested grow daily smaller, and more precarious, and it is only the ignorance of labor that leads to the belief that the capital is fat tening on the misfortune of the half paid workingmen. Both capital and la bor aro in tho same boat, drifting down the rapids towards destruction, and the only relief is to got out of the current; in other.words, to relieve the conges tion, and put the overcrowded popula tion where their company is needed more than their room There are no strikes in the south, sim ply because tho demand for labor ex ceeds tho supply, and if workingmen can’t get satisfactory wages in one place, they can soon fiud other places that will bid up. Let tho people “spread out,” and strikes will bo unheard of, until the congestion of population becomes gen- oral. A sensation has developed in the con test for the mayoralty in Montgomery, Ala. The Alabama Baptist, published an editorial bitterly denouncing Col. Beese, one of the mayoralty candidates, and his supporters. In the Evening Journal Keeso’s supporters denounced the article and Mr. Crommelin, his op ponent, repudiates It A deacon In the First Baptist church of the city writes a communication In the Journal In which ho severely arraigns the Baptist editors. Dr. J. B. Hawthorne, of Atlanta In a recent letter denounced them as v'le and unworthy tho support of southern Baptists. The fooling Is Intonse, and by some it Is feared there will bo trouble before tho polls close Saturday night. Politics are getting rod hot In tho Florida legislature, and charges of bribery are beiug made. It was an nounced In open session that J. R. New- lan had offered John L. Bryant $100 to vote against Senator Call, and Xewlan denounced it as an infamous lie. Flor ida legislators must belong to the two- for-a-quartcr variety if such a sum as $100 is thought to bo sufficient to buy them. $1,000 Is a fair price for a vote in a close and important contest. Mr. Jay Gould's opinion on this subject ought to havo been taken beforehand, ns he basin his time bought several New York legislatures, according to current report uot denied by himself. IIog a ns vil. I. E, Ga., is up in nrms because Postmaster-General Wanatnaker says he appoints postmasters to please the people. That town is suffering the iuiliction of a negro postmaster alio can hardly read and great confusion exists iu the office, and iu tho handling of the mails. This is one of Boss Buck’s ap- poiutments, and the usual result followed as a matter of course. A strong effort will ho made to have the postmaster re moved, or else make Wanamaker eat his words about making appointments to please the pcoplo. sub- little, so loog as ho can guard his jects from their influence. Keely has so far failed to make his motor “mote,” but he makes the En glisli language get up and dust to keep itself distinguishable from Volapuk, as will be seen from the following explana tion: “1 am making a sympathetic har ness for tho polar terrestrial force—first, by exciting the sympathetic concordant force that exists in tho corpuscular in- stertial domain, which is concordant to it; and, second, after the concordance is established, by ncgatizlng the thirds, sixths and ninths of this concordance, thereby inducing high velocities with great power by intermittent negatiou, ns associated with tho dominant thirds. Again, take away the sympathetic latent force that all matter is impregnated with tho connective link between the finite and the infinite would be dissoci ated and gravity would be neutralized, thereby bringing all visible and invisible aggregations back into the great etheric realm.” LOVELY SILK’S, PLAIN' AND FI SILK SUBLIME—the prettiest on the market. Cer tainly everything looked decidedly fa vorable when I left Washington. A large majority of the old members aro for him, and, you know, the new ones generally go with the old ones for they know best. Of course his opponents will use Tom Watson's letter against him, raising the cry that he can't control his own state delegation, but I don't be- llevo they can hurt Crisp now.” The habit that lawyers have got into of objecting to everything from tho other side was Illustrated In tho Dodd murder trial in Atlanta Tuesday, in which Col. Martin read from tho Uihlo: "Whoso sheddetli man’s blood, by man shall Ills blood ho shed." This was ob jected to by the defendant's counsel, and the judgo ruled: “If Col. Martin desires to mako that a part of his speech thero can ho no reasonable ob jection. It is not yet out of order to read the Bible.’’ It is the teaching of history that pres idential jaunts are not favorable to tiie political fortunes of candidates who ro- sort to that method of enhancing tliclr chances for renomination. The result of Mr. Hayes’ itinerary and the melan choly failure of Androw Johnson to se cure an indorsement by “swinging around tho circle,’' arc still fresh in the public mind. The precedents are against Mr. Harrison, and tiio prospect is that the rule will not he violated in his case. \ few Novelty Suits to lie closed AT COST ! WHITE GOODS. PR0FES3I0NAL CARDS T. J.
