While we possess all the requisites necessary for the success of a legiti mate and dashing business, WE HAVE THE LARGEST AND FINEST STORE IX THE CITY. WE HAVE THE LARGEST AND FINEST STOCK IX THE CITY, and wt are known throughout this section as the It was a great fake. T liat statement of the assassination of Secretary Blaine. But Americus was not the only city fooled, and there is some comfort that. Yesterday afternoon about a o’clock the rumor became current on the streets that the secretary of state had been _ sassinated by the Italians in Washing- On every side the question was asked IIow about the killing of Blaine," and the whole town was in a furor of excite ment to learn the particulars. The re port spread like wild lire, end excite ment held forth everywhere. Tim Times Kecokdeii telephone was kept ringing merrily, and the same question was asked over and over again. The Western Union nflico was besieged for bulletins, and the railroad offices also interviewed The people took it as a signal for war, and on alt sides talk could bo hoard of doing Up Italy. Mr. Blaine received more compliments than could be thought possible, and his tragic (loath was bemoaned by ail. Last night the drum of the Americus Light Infantry rang nut for » practice drill, and the question was askod if war had been declared and they were off to light the nation of organ grinders. The whole town was wrought up, and the members of the Italian band here wore looked at with meaning glances. Tho origin of the rumor here seems to have been tho operator at the Central. Ho caught it over the wire from Macon, and from here the report spread. Savannah was asked, and from there came the first denial. It was stated that there was nothing in it, but that the report seemed current everywhere. From Washington it was also denied, and by night many know that the secre tary was still working on his reciprocity ideas. The Macon Evening News of yester day published that a telegram was re ceived there from New Y'ork about 3 o'clock stating that Blaine had been as sassinated at 2:30. After stating that no particulars could be learned, ii Insinuated that tbe Italian’s did it. The notice is short but slugged, and appears under a big bead. This makes the second statesman the News has killed, and the question now is: ‘Where did the papergetit's telegram." This may have originated the rumor. Tho regular press telegrams say nothing about It A special to The Tiuzs-Rk- conniu from Washington ssys that "no origin can be given for the silly ru mor.” The matter seems merely to have been passed over the] wires by the operator, but it cortalnly wrought up the people It was a silly and unwise rumor, and tbe originator should be attended to. Nows has just reached the city of the horrible death of a negro girl in tbe fifteenth district, on the William's place. She waa burned to a crisp, and died In fearful agony It happened a few days ago, and seems to have been due to gross care lessness. On the dmy of the tragedy, the parents left two young daughters, one 4 or 5 years old and the other about 10, alone in the house. By some means the bed caught afire, and at the same time the dress of the oldest girl blazed up. The little one rushed out, and the other un fortunate creature not knowing what to do followed out into the open air. Ilcr clothes, fanned by tho breeze, blazed more, and the child foil almost consumed to the ground. llor sister screamed nnd cried, finally attracting to the scene somo white peo ple. In the number was Mrs. Williams, Tho girl was found lying on tho ground totally unconscious, ail tho clothes burned off, and from head to foot tlie body was a mass of burns and blisters. In places the llesh was bare and had fallen from tho bones. The sight was most sickening, and tlie moans of tho dying negress added to tiio horribleness of the scene. In spite of this Mrs. Williams stood bravely by, and ordored that tlie child be carried to her own house. This was done, and medical attendance was sum moned at once. Mrs. Williams herself waited upon tho sufferer, and tendered everything which woidd add to tlie girl’s comfort. But sho was burned to such a terrible extent that nothing could be done but put her out of pain, and la about an hour death relieved her. Col. R. C. Maguire, of Eufaula, was In the city yesterday. She was sentenced about two weeks ago to sixty days labor on tbe streets for public indecency, but escaped on last Saturday. She was re captured, and yesterday was tried. D. Bailey, Haberdasher. The Only One. A short Ume alnce there was a Shako- spcrcan symposium In Macon, and the flfty-slx questions were published In tlie papers Inviting answers from any. One Wesleyan girl answered flfty-flva of the question*, but It remained for an Americus lady to answer the total num ber. This was done by Mrs. E. YV. Brunner, who alone answered orery question correctly. She Is a very talented lady, and Is well up on literature of nil sorts. One fact is Yvorth a thousand theories.
