Ill our line of business we are the recognized leaders, and we propose to continue to carry off the honors. While we possess ail the requisites necessary for the success of a legiti mate and dashing business, WE HAVE TIIE LARGEST AND FINEST STOKE IN THE CITY. WE HAVE THE LARGEST AND FINEST STOCK IN THE CITY, and wt are known throughout this section as the Among the cases tried In Lumpkin last week was that against Hal Adams for wife murder. The evidence against Adams was almost convincing, but owing to tho shrewdness of his lawyers, he was froed. Americua has a lino bar, and this work of one of. our most successful lirny: shows how successful they are. The Macon Telegraph publishes an account of the trial and of the lawyers’ work, which makes interesting reading matter, especially to Americus people. It will be found below: Adams was defended by Simmons <fc Kimbrough- of Americus. The state proved that Hal Adams hail made threats against his wife; that no one was in the house at the time of the killing, but Adams and his wife; that the de ceased was shot in the right side, just under the armpit, and that it was im possible for the deceased to have acci dentally or Intentionally shot herself In such a placo and manner. There are no powder or smoko stains on her dross— nothing to show the woman killed her self, The fact that there was no powder or smoke stains on the dress of deceased caused much concern to defendant’* lawyers, Messrs. Simmons & Kimbrough. How were they to show the woman may hare shot herself and yet no pistol stains on the dress? But lawyer*, like Bill Arp'* “Big John” on the retreat from Borne, are full of expedient*. Sim mon* A Kimbrough procured a pistol ltd- calibre, like the one that tired the fatal shot, bought a piece of stripes like the dress, betook themselves in the hot sun to a big gully outside the incorporate limlta of the city, placed the cloth against the surface of the gully, put tho pistol In two feet of the doth and fired. The cloth took Are and the powder and smoke stains were there?’ Simmons, discouraged, said: “Kim, our man will hang; we aro gono up'" But Kim said: “I'll go back to to town and get a different kind of doth." Kira went, even if tho sun was hot. Said Simmons, on Kim's return: “Lot's hang that cloth on a limb where no resistance will be met," “I'm with you” replied Kim. Tho cloth, a sort of navy blue, was ar ranged, and the shot ilred at two feet distance! No powder and no smoke! “We aro safe!” cried tho enthusiastic Simmons. Tho two walked to town. They bought more of this navy bluo sort of cCSth;’’ They Invited Mr. John West, a reliable man, to walk with them to tho giilly. West thought there was perhaps, a few bottles of champagno hid out in the grass along the gully, for Lumpkin Is a very dry town. But upon arrival at PERSONALS. Col. W. P. Hence tho pistol was fired by the husband. Bat to make sure, tho “stato” and hi* assistant attor neys took part of the very dress of the deceased and made their experiment. The piece of dress was placed vertically against the earth and a pistol fired Into It two feet distant. The powder at tached and the smoke stain* were there to speak In defense of the woman. In rebuttal came the experiment of the dofense. Doubts, as big as a man’s hand, are raised on the mind of the jury and under the impassioned eloquence of the impetuous Simmons, those doubts became great clonds, and the jury re turned a verdict, “Not guilty.” This verdict of “not guilty” was a tri umph of legnl smartness, for no one be lieves the woman shot herself Intention ally or accidentally. When the defendant bad been set free and his lawyers gone to their rooms for the night, they called the “oldstate" and showed him the first experiment and bow fatal the results and how they had experimented with other samples. The curtain must fall on the answer given by the state. W. D. Bailey’s Haberdashery. Guerry * Castleberry had at their market yesterday aa fine beef as any one conld desire.
