A Pennsylvania judge recently ren
dered a decision which is interesting to
all persons who ride in street cars, and
the city railway companies as well. A
passenger tendered a $5 hill in payment
of his fare on n Philadelphia car. The
conductor could not ebango it, and after
on altercation put the passenger off the
car. Tlie passenger brought a suit for
assault and battery against the con
ductor. In his charge to the jury the
judge said:
"When a passenger gets on a street
car it is his duty to pay his five cents
fare, and if he cannot pay it it is his
duty to get off. The conductor has a
right to use os much force as is neces
sary to put him off. Any man who has
a $100 dollar bill, if the rule were other
wise, might ride around in street cart
for the balance of his life without pay
ing fare.”
Under these instructions the jury ac
quitted the conductor. The railroad
companies of Philadelphia are greatly
pleased with the result of the suit. They
say that they have lost a large number
of fares simply because passengers per
sisted in handing conductors b$|js of so
large an amount that they were unable
to break them. The president of one of
the roads stated that he knew of a man
who succeeded in riding free twice a day
for six months simply by playing the
large bill racket on conductors.—Albany

A atonamsnt od”A*lvellyn.
A monument has just been finished
which is to be erected on Hclvellyn to
ths memory of Charles Oongh, who in
thn year 1805 was killed while mount
aineering, and of the faithful dog who
tor three months watched ovet- his mas

ths event in the poem, "I Climb'd the
Dark Brow of the Mighty Helvellyn,’’
and Wordsworth records it in bis line*
on "Fidelity.” The cost of the monu

I mentioned some time ago that Ca-
nova's famous marble group of Theseus
and tho.Centaur was being transported
from the Greek temple erected over it
in tho Volksgarten of that city to the
museum of art on the other side of the
ring. The Centaur was transposed with
out difficulty and is already on the ped
estal which fills the recess of the first
landing on the magnificent stnircase of
the museum.
Yesterday the Theseus was laid upon
one of tho low heavy carts built ex
pressly for tho transport of weighty ob
jects, and was drawn through the gar
dens toward the gate. The cart had to
pass over one of the water drains which
run under the Volksgarten. The weight
was too much for the thin vault, which
gave way, and suddenly tho cart sank on
one side, turned over, and the statue lay
shattered on tho ground. The right
arm, which holds tho club on high, was
broken off at the shoulder. The statue
was raised and placed under the trees of
the Volksgarten, whither the whole city
will run to see it when the news of the
mishap gets afloat.—Vienna Cor. Lon

I'road of Ills Veers.
Among the many venerable men who
registered t-.s voters in Brooklyn for the
last election was a tall man with ruddy
countenanco and white hair and beard.
His form was erect, and he would easily
be taken for a man of 60.
As ho approached the registry clerk
and announced his name there was a
general craning of ll•■.•ks to catch a
glimpse of the proud looking old man.
“What is your age?"
“Eighty-five years."
“Where were you born?"
"In Brooklyn.”
"How long have you lived in the state?'
"Eighty-five years.”
“How long in the ward?"
"Eighty-live years."
"How long in the election district?"
"Eighty-five years.”
"That's oil, sir," said the clerk, and an
Americau citizen, who was bom in 1805
in the house in which he now- lives and
has always lived, walked away.—New

A Hare Remedy.
When a person is sick they wish more
than aught elso a restoration of health.
They are willing to take even nauseous
medicine in order to get well. With
many, however, a first consideration Is
whether the medicine is perfectly safe.
Will it or will It not leavo any evil after
effects? Now, there Is one remedy
known to be certainly safe. It is a bo
tanical discovery, and it is called Botanic
Blood Balm, or B. B. B. It will not
harm the most delicate constitution, nor
will a discontinuance causo a craving
for its further use. It is a sure antidote
for poison in the blood. The blood be
comes poisoned in various ways. Con
stipation, urinary difficulties and other
causes of effete matter remaining in the
system will cause blood Impurity, or
blood poison as many calllt. Symptoms
of blood poison should not be neglected.
B. B. B. should be taken at once. It
will cure promptly, and is not had to
take, nor will ft leave any evil after
effects. .
J. D. Watkins, Blakely, Ga., writes:
Old sores covered my entire person,
and Itched intensely night and day. For
several months I could not work at all.
I commenced the use of Botanic Blood
Balm and began to grow better the first
week, and am now sound and well, free
from sores and itching and at work
again.”
