The county court room was filled yes
terday afternoon to hear the trial of the
negro gamblers, arrested Monday.
Two had plead guilty the day before,
and all the rest had given bond for their
appearance for disposal of their cases
yesterday afternoon.
They were on hand, some ten or twelve
of them, and besides a big crowd of
white and blacks to hear the proceed
ings.
Jim Perry was called first, and enter
ed a plea of guilty. Judge l’iisbury
fined him $!!5 including costs, which
was promptly paid.
John Bonner was next asked to stand
forth. IIo announced that lie was not
guilty, and the trial began. A long list
of witnesses were called and sworn in.
Tho first who took the stand sworo posi
tively that he saw Bonner Bhoot crops
on Sunday last. Ho stated that there
was a big crowd of negroes there, some
playing skin, some shooting craps and
others playing casino. He saw John
Bonner shoot craps with one of the
crowd for a dime, John losing the
money.
The state rested the case on this, and
John, who didn’t want a lawyer, intro
duced Amos Turner, Mose Wilson,Ayteh
Baker and others.
The testimony of these was remarka
ble in extreme. All but Baker stated
that they took a walk down the r ilroad,
and saw a crowd of negroes but that
was all.
They stopped at the spring, talked
awhile, but as to seoing or hearing of
gaming they wore in tho dark. They
saw Bonner down there for a few min-
utos, but didn’t see him or anybodyelse
play cards or shoot dice. They enumer
ated some of those seen, and among
them was Baker.
Bakor was put on the stand, and
stated that ho had spent Sunday at the
Magnolia Dell with somo girls. He was
closely quizzed, but stuck to his story.
Other witnesses stated that they saw
all of tho above play cards or shoot craps
for money, and the whole affair began to
take on that dark and mysterious huo
which negro witnesses always throw on
any subject, and especially one of this
kind.
That tiicro was a big crowd of ne
groes gambling Sunday is certain, and
it is just as certain that tho negroes ar
rested were the right ones.
Nearly every witness swore a differ
ent tale, and before adjourning Judge
Pilsbury gave them a sound talk on the
subject of perjury. He Informed them
that there was no doubt as to their ly
ing, but he hadn't enough proof to put
them in jail. He stated, however that
they had best he careful and stick to
the truth orthey would get into serious
trouble.
Bonner was adjudged guilty and
lined $38.
The other cases were postponed, some
until this afternoon, and the others un- J
til Saturday.*
The charge against Dick Wilson was
withdrawn and he was released.

A Snaky Season.
Magnolia dell is a favorite resort of
snakes as well as of the people, and
thero seem to be a great many of the
reptiles this year. However, they never
intrude upon tho people, and there is no
danger in seeking pleasure at this lovely
place.
Sunday, several small boys took It
into their heads to wago a war against
tho numerous moccasin tribe, and pro
ceeded to carry out the Idea. They
fought for several hours, running the
snakes out of their hiding places, and
after killing them, heaping them in a
pile. When they II nislied, the pile would
fill a bushel basket. In their joy the
boys then stretched thorn out in a line,
which covered a distanco of 150 yards
There were 123 snakes in all, of various
lengths and sizes.
A big ejectment suit has been filed in
Clerk Allen's office, Involving some $25,-
000 worth of property.
The parties against whom the suit Is
filed were notified of the fact yesterday.
Tire land in question is the northern
part of the city, includes the pumping
station of the waterworks, the Americus
Construction Company and a number of
small tenement houses.
The plaintiffs are children of W. J.
Bosworth, deceased.
These are just recently corao of age,
and now through thoir attorneys, Hud
son & Blalock and W, P. Wallace, have
filed the suit of ejectment
Tlie property in question came into
the possession of the plaintiffs through
their grandmother to their father. Tho
latter died before alt the children came
of age, and Mr. L. B. Bosworth was
raado executor of the estate. Nearly
ten years ago tho proporty was sold to
Elbert Head, who in turn sold portions
of it to other parties.
It will be a case of great interest, not
only on account of its size but because
of the legal points said to be involved.
The ground on which Is the city pump
ing station Is Involved, nnd this too adds
to the general interest
It means* big tiling for the plaintiffs if
they win. All the heirs are not repre
sented ln.the suit, nnd those who are,
are, of course, merely suing for their
parts.
Another branch hat also been entered
by the plaintiffs. They hater suit
against the executor for account In set
tlement, and claim they have' never had
a settlement although they came hero
for that purpose from their homes In
Alabama.
