John R. Shaw,
There will bo a very peculiar trial to
take place not far from Americus somo
day next week
It Is a church trial, and the church is
located just live miles above Anderson
ville.
The man to be tried is accused of in,
terfering with the will of God.
The church is of the Hardshell Bap
1st denomination, and the accused is
well-to-do and well kno *n gentleman
living at Andersonvllle.
The charge preferred against him is
putting lightning rods on his house, thus
seeking to interfere, as they construe it,
with the will of God.
Tho gentleman in question is Mr. J. J.
Dukes, who lias scores of friends in
Americus and all this section. He is
man of ability and has made quite a suc
cess in farming. Not long since he had
a neat homo built, and had it fitted up
in a nice and comfortable manner. As
is usual, lie had hardly completed his
building beforo tho irrepressible light
ning rod agent put in liis appearance,
and with suave manner and smooth lan
guage brought forth the countless reas
ons why protection should he sought
from tbo electrical elemont.
Mr. Dukes finally decided to accept
the offer, and soon had tho little steel
points reaching out from the tin use
Ho lias for yoars been a member in
good standing of the Hardshell church
just north of his place, and after having
the work dono eontlnued to faithfully
attend services and perform his duties
as a member. His co-workers in tho
church, however, viewed with groat
concern the heretical performance above
mentioned, and many of tho good sis
ters and brethren argued with him to
have the rods romovod. Tho watchful
pastor talked and prayed with the wan
derer from his Hock, but all to no pur
pose. Mr. Dukes couldn’t sec the harm
and tho rods remained,
Finally the matter had gone as far as
the church, as a body could permit, and
a meeting was held to discuss it. They
sent committee after committee to the
wayward brother, but all to no purposo,
and then it was decided to make a test
case of the matter.
A committee was sent to him a short
time since, to inform him that early in
May he would be tried by the church
for going contrary to tbo doctrine ho
professed.
That is how the caso stands now.
Tho Haidsltells liavo a doctrine of
their own, which is different in a great
many particulars from that held by
other denominations.
In this case they bold that the wilt of
God lias been interfered with, and thus
the brother has done an action for which
he must answer to the church.
The trial comes up next week, and
will doubtless bo interesting. Mr. Dukes
is very popular here and is recognized ss
a good citizen and man. His many
friends will watch the proceedings care
fully.

What's In » Name?
On next Tuesday the board of direc
tors of the Manufacturing and Improve
ment Company will proceed to select by
vote a name for the new hotel, which
heretofore, for want of a name, has been
called the “Semaramis,” the ‘‘Sumter,’
tho “Hotel Americus,” the new hotel,
etc., just as the fancy of tho person sug
gested.
But as the handsome structure con
tinues to take Bliapc, and is now nearly
a year old, it becomes more apparent
that unless a proper namo is authorita
tively given it, Bomcbody wilt name it
anyhow.
Hence tho conclusion of tho board to
act on tho matter at an early day.
Of coarse it is not the province of the
outside public to undertake to tell the
hoard what to name it, but it might not
be amiss for everybody to have their say
in the way of a suggestion, which the
board will or will not adopt, just as it
happens to strike tbeir fancy.
The hotel will be tho pride of the city,
and everybody wants it to have the best
and the prettiest name that can be de
vised, and under the pica that “in tho
multitude of counsellor* there is safety"
The Timks-Rkcobdxk takes the
liberty of suggesting to all who may feel
so inclined and especially the ladies,
that names for the consideration of the
Board might not bo out of order, es
pecially as these very amiable gentlemen
will not consider it officious, but merely
an expression of publio taste, without
the purpose to unduly influence them in
their seleotlon. There aro scores of ap
propriate names; so many in fact, that
somo very good ones might bo over
looked unless everybody tried tbeir hand
at suggesting, and thus place before
those gentlemen every sort of namo
from which to seleet
By making use of these columns,
everybody can get their suggestions be
foro the eyes of the gentlemen who have
to wrestle with the same -problem that
confronts tlio ladle* who have babifli .t^
name;-and IfndnS of-*tha'suggested
names aro adopted there is no harm
dono at least, and everybody will have
had the chance to beoom* the successful
name giver, If their suggestion should
fit the ideas of the Board.
Let’s hear from the ladles especially,
whose tasto in such matters is un
doubted.
Americus officers did some neat work
yesterday morning, and captured a negro
thief who has been wanted for over two
years.
He goes under tho name of Ozborn
Smith, and has the reputation of being a
very slick negro.
His depredations have been in the
country, and many smoke houses in this
section have been entered by him iu the
past two or three years. He has often
been spotted, and several times nearly
captured, but eacii time managed to get
away. Once an officer returned with his
coat, vest and shirt, but tbe negro had
slipped out.
Yesterday morning the officers found
six country hams and a lot of sldo meat
at Ilarnott'8 store on Church street.
Barnett said he had bought them from a
negro that morning. Suspicion was
arousod, and Barnett was told to let the
officers know if the negro returned, and
not to sell tlte goods. Officers Smith
and Duncan, with Lieutenant Wheeler,
begnn looking out and making invest!
gations. They were sure that there must
have been stealing done, and just before
noon were made sure of the fact.
They found an old negro, Randall
Glover, who had just come to town in a
big hurry and great excitement.
Ho stated that while in a field plow
Ing, somebody bad gone to his smoke
house and cut off the hinges with an axe.
The thief then make off with six hams
and a lot of side meat.
The officers then began hunting for
their man, and soon had him located
back at Barnett's store.
The negro hail escaped so often be
fore that they were careful to make sure
of him this time. They got Jailor Face,
who was in citizen clothes to go straight
on down the road. Lieutenant Wheeler
and Officers Smith nnd Barrow then
went the back way, and closed la on
their man. He could show no resistance
to such odds, and it didn't take long to
have him behind the bars.
It was a good capture, neatly done,
and rids the surrounding country of
great pest

A Hut Fire.
Tbo readers of Tub Tihes-Kecubder
will remember the account in a recent
issue, of tbe burning of Acord's mill,
near Helona. The passenger train was
due at tho station just at the time the
fire was tho hottest, and the burning
mill was quite close to the track.
Engineer George Nix aaw the fire as
the train approached the staUon, and
realizing that should he stop, the train
would bo In danger, and if be slowed up
the cars would bo so blistered as to re
quire a fresh coat of paint, he went by
at a fast rate.
It was a good action on bis part and
saved the S., A. ft M. much expense.
Even at a fast rate tbe fire was felt,
and the baggage-master who stuck out
hla head, received a bad blister.
