WHAT 8HALL THE NAME OF OUR
NEW HOTEL BE?

What They An Worth-homo Want One
Thin, and home Another—Committee
Will Decide Toreday Nut.
Wbat do you think the new hotel
•houid be named ?
The queatlon will be decided Tueaday,
and if you have a suggestion it is time
you banded it In.
The directors meet Tuesday, and will
discuss if not decide, the name. They
have already thought a great deal over
the matter, and doubtless a majority
hare decided upon the name they want.
But suggestions are not out of order, and
the following received by Tan Tiues-
Recobdeb yesterday are given as they
were banded In:
Amerious—As you desire suggestions
for the name of the new hotel, I offer
that of “Hotel Amerious," which
think cannot be bettered.
haa lost none of Ita cbprm by being
Americanised; and in several cities.of
America the most popular hotels ere
called the “Windsor.” There is an
aristoeratio sound about that name for
hotel, which is suggestive of firsLclazs
appointments and high tone that ac
companies few other names, except
such as the Brunswick, the Vlotoris,
the Imperial, which would not be as ap
propriate as the “Windsor." “The
Windsor" let it be; “The Windsor” It
shall be.

U. Callaway—The name of our city
suggests a title which I think most ap
propriate for our city. I think it should
be called the “Hotel Tespucius.”
Sumter—In answering to your call for
sugggestions, I would say that while
know there is considerable opposition
to the name, I think “Hotel Sumter” is
the best that can be chosen.
Judge Pllsbury—Indian names are far
more beautiful In sound than Spanish.
Why not call our hotel the “Osceola ?"
or the “Powhatan f or the “Kincha-
foonco ?" or the “Huckalee?"
Stockholder—I am satisfied with
“Hotel Semiramls." It is as good as
could be selected. Americus is the
Queen City, and I think the name of her
hotel should be that of a queen.
That is correct in styleand|perfect
n fit.

T. X. Hawkes—Let us call it the Bona
Fide. That’s a good name, both in the
matter of sound and sense, and is sug
gestive of the first-class qualities that
will characterize our hotel. This sug
gestion is a “bona fide one.”

S. K. Taylor—“What ought the hotel
to be called?" Why not name it the
“Hunkldoiy?” That is a beautiful In
dian name, and is suggestive of the solid
prosperity that will follow along in the
wake of the completion of this magnifi
cent edifice.
Old Inhabitant—I notice in your paper
a call for suggestions for the name of
the new hotel. I have lived in and
around Americus for many years, and
the name of our city has grown dear to
me. I am satisfied that we have the
best city in the world, and 1 don’t see
how the name “Hotel Americus" can be
improved upon.
Will Open To-morrow,
The interior of the old telegraph office
on Jackson street underwent a decided
change yesterday, and from a dingy of
fice was transformed into one of the
coziest and most attractive retreats In
the city. Nehring, the baker and con-
feolloner, baa fitted it up for an ice
oream parlor, and there the ladies can
regale thbmselves with this and like de
licious ices during the summer months.
Beginning to-morrow, ice cream and
sherbet will be served daily from 2 to 10
o’clock p. m. The people will appre
ciate this stroke of enterprise upon the
part of Hr. Nehring and will accord him
a liberal patronage.

Citizen—I see yon ask for suggestions
of a name for the new hoteL We have a
man bore who Is recognized from oecan
to ocean and from Maine to California
as a leader In the Union, and I think it
would be the right thing to name our
magnificent new hotel after him. I sug
gest “Hotel Crisp” as the best I can
think of.
D. C. N. Burkhalter—I see you ask for
suggestions as to a suitable 'name to be
give to our magnificent new hotel. Can
not the management in naming it make
It a memorial edifice to the memory of a
man who in bis day and time did more
for his town and country than any one
of her citizens by giving it bis name,
suggest as the most fitting name, Hotel
Furlow.
Judge Allen Fort—The hotel ought to
be called the Crisponia. This could be
construed not only as complimentary to
our distinguished congressman and
follow townsman, but would partake
enough of the name of Signor Crispl the
Italian to be of the nature of a sop to
King Humbert, and might mollify hia
rage against the United States, and will
certainly create a warm spot in his
heart for Amerious in the event of a war
with Italy, and we may feel sure that
none of King Humbert's iron clads will
sail up the Huckalee and shell this city.
Thus we would kill three birds with one
stone, therefore let It be the “Cris-
panto.”
A. T. Maxwell—Everybody Is now
going back to the date of the English
and Spanish [discoveries in Americus for
names, and while the “Ponce de Leon,”
•Cordora," “Alcazar,” “Do Soto” and
other Spanish names are all the rage
with some people, let us stick to our
good old English ancestry and take the
medieval names for hotels that are made
famous in literature. Who does not re
member the quaint names in the days of
Dr. Samuel Johnson and Elizabethan
era? In front of each hotel hung a sign,
having painted upon it the patron saint
of the bonlface who presided. Now let
Americus adopt the English instead of
the Spanish' style, and call her hotel
“the Blue Boar” or “Bull’s Head Inn.”

Saturday evening brings with it an in-
tereaUng scene on the streets of Ameri
cas. The city Is alive with people all
the time, nut in this place Saturday
brings additional attractions here that
are not found in many other cities.
The tradespeople from tho adjoining
towns and suburbs, and the working
people, all pour into tho city in the af
ternoon, and by ? o'clock the market
places and stores are alive with moving,
happy humanity.
They are looking at the novelties
and attractions, buying goods, clothing,
groceries and provisions. A large per
centage of the working people only buy
a week’s supply of groceries and provis
ions at a time, and Saturday afternoon
and evening is the time they choose for
making these purohsses.
But it is the immense Uiroug of ne
groes, hanging as it were, like a low,
black cloud, that calls forth the most at
tention and comment
Before noon the streets begin to take
on a darker hue, and the country ne
groes 'begin arriving, some in carts,
some in wagons, and some on foot. By
four o'clock the streets are crowded, and
in popular localities it la difflenlt to pash
your way through the orowd. They do
their trading and then gather in gronpe
and seem to be experiencing the great
est enjoyment Their plays of wit and
broad jokes eaose the load guffaws and
hearty langba characteristic of the race
to bo heard on all sides.
They are the happiest oreatores on
earth, and no matter how ragged and ill
clad he may be, every negro in the
orowd shows his white teeth on the
slightest provocation, and olearly
evinces that he is perfecUy content.
Possibly he had bnt little money to
buy the week's rations, bnt he and the
“ole ’oman" don’t teem to mind It.
They know they have enough for supper
and breakfast, and that's aa far ahead
as they can see.
In every southern town there Is a
gathering of negroes on Saturday, but
surely there can’t be as many as are seen
here. It seems as if all the negroes In
thia section, men, women and ehiidren
have flocked here, and many would
furnish a Dickens with a character which
would become more famous than any
ever portrayed.
It’e a scene one never grow* tired of,
notletng these people, always respeotfn),
and always laughing.
Yesterday the orowd of blaeka,browns,
yellows and coppers seemed even larger
than ever.
A reporter stood In front of the open
house building for a few minntee late
yesterday afternoon, and proceeded to
takeaklndof amateur census of the
passers by. First, however, he noticed
that there were fifty-six negroes of va
rious oolors, ages and sixes standing
around him.
Of the first hundred who passed by,
eighty-six were negroes.
Of the next handled eighty-seven be
longed to the dark hoed race.
The abeam of negroes going and
coming was continuous, and to extricate
oneself from the orowd was quite a job.
From bere the reporter went to Cotton
avenue, and plaoed himself near
Cohen’s peanut parcher.
There la always a mob around this
place Saturdays, and like everywhere
else, negroes wers in great majority.
Messrs. Cohen and Scott were kept
busy as bees dealing out hot peanuts
and pop corn, always In nlckle lots.
There seemed to be an especial rush
just at tbia time, and the bags were
handed out at the rate of two a minute
for fifteen minutes. Of these thirty
bags all were bought,by negroes except
one,and that went to the pencil posher
himself. A hundred passers by were
counted here, and seventy-three of the
number were sons and daughters of
