The New Orle»n« Picayune suggests that the old Confederate veterans should organise in every Southern state for the purpose of raising funds for a monu ment to the memory of Jefferson Davis, and that the matter should bo called to their attention by Gen. John B. Gordon, 80 : the commander of the Confederate Vet- 00 j erans Association, at the reunion which I Lakes place at Jackson, Miss., next | month. The people of the South should as one ; man follow the lead to be set by the vet- Amerious, Go., May 6, 1891. Hogg, of Texas, to till the unexpired term of Senator Reagan, was at one time a tramp printer. M. Quad, formerly on the staff of the Detroit Free Press, has been engaged as a sketch writer for the New Kork World at a salary of $200 a week. Rudini's latest effusion is to the ef fect that he is tired of the controversy over the New Orleans affair. He has our permission to cut It off. The two Savannah lawyers who were arraigned for using offensive language In a brief before the supremo court, have apologized and were forgiven. They will perhaps be a little more particular the next time. All other matters must give way to the May day picnic. The pant few days Georgians, men, women and children, have spent in tiie woods and the joyous about of the youog ones makes glad the hearts of the old. The convention called by Governor Northen to devise ways and meaus to have Georgia represented at the World’s in Chicago, will meet in Atlanta to-mor row. The attendance promises to be Urge from all portions of the state. The veterans of Dougherty county have decided to hold the reunion on the 20th of May at that picturesque spot— Blue spring, four mile, below the city of thousand bVttle field,,from"BuUBun to There were thirteen states in the Con federacy, and there were hundreds of thousands of Southern soldiers and sym pathizers in the non-seceding border states. Nothing short of a half {pillion dollars should be thus invested, and if every veteran would constitute himself a com mittee of one to raise subscriptions, each Southern state might raise $4,000 to $50,• 000, by letting everybody contribute twenty-five cents up to five dollars, as they might feel inclined. If there ever was a holy duty incum bent upon the people of the south, it is to show their devotion to the memory of the great man whoso sun set behind the clouds of defeat iu a cause for which thousands of our people laid down their lives, Let a memodal he erected worthy of the greatness and the self-sacrifice of the chief who led where tvery southern man and woman followed. Let every old soldier rally around the last resting placo of his old chieftain for the performance of a sacred duty. Let the patriotic women who make green the graves of the sleeping heroes on memorial day, take up this matter, aod add this duty to that which they have obligated themselves to observe as long as time shall last. Let the children of these fathers, whose boxes lie beneath the sods of a Albany. They will have a big barbe-1 AppoIna ttox, and the children of other. cue and general Jollification on that oc- cation. Goverxok Stoxe, of Hietissipjii, who baa been spoken of a, the probable sue ccwor of Senator Walthall, a, the Alli ance candidate, come, out in a lottor op posing the sub-treasury scheme. This may defeat his chances to represent Mississippi in the upper house. IIev. J. B. Culpepper began a series of meeting in Atlanta Sunday evening, •t bit tent in the rear of St. Phillip's church. He is an able and eloquent evangelist and will shake up the Gate City as It has no-or been shaken before since Sam Jones gave it his last tussle. Tiie President Is making a reputation out In California as a humorist. This Is where Mark Twain, Bret Harte and Bill Nye got their start. Can I the that there la something in the climate that makes a solomn man funny f Or is it the effect of the California wine for which the Pa cific itate la eelebrated ? The Aga-Berald of Sunday contains twenty-six and a half eolnmns of state and county tax sales of Birmingham real estate, belonging to parties unknown. It Is a curious commentary upon the shifting population of that city that the owners of several thousand lots should be unknown to the tax collector. Mk. Blair’s surprise that the Chi nese treated him as he urged the Chinese to be treated In this country, shows that his obtuseness Is only surpassed by his long-windedness. But for the good of this country It is to be hoped that some country at the antipodes will be willing to let him reside there as long as he de sires. The New York legislature has ad journed without making an appropria tion for the World's Fair, thus placing this empire state In the category of oth ers; which either from iodlfforenoe or envy have failed to make appropriations. I! a few more legislatures follow this ex ample, the World’k Fair will be a mere aide show. Albert has just completed her elev. enth artesian well, and there Is no longer any excuke for Editor Turner to avoid the use of water as a beverage. At a depth of S00 feet a stratum of coal fifteen feet thick wae struck. Two other wells are being bored, which will add largely to the bountiful supply of pore water for which Albany is so justly eelebrated. General Schofield I, very much pleased with the progress that hat been made to enlist Indians of the Sioux tribe In the army. Up to date two full companies of cavalry have been enlisted and there Is every reason to believe that they will prove to be good material for the army, because they submit readily to discipline and are splendid riders, having lived from infancy on horseback. Tux Boston Traveler, one of the most prominent eastern republican organs, sees the hand writing on the wall with regard to the republican party if the Farmers' Alliance keeps up its present move; and It Is therefore the proper thing to advise them to stay at home and plow while the republican poli ticians run the public affairs. The Traveler tells the fanners that If they enter poll ticca their party will be either “epiphytes” or “paraeytes.” Thtsro- iniuds one of Dr. Samuel Johnson’s ef fort to enrage a Billingsgate fish woman by calling her a “parallelogram.” Bat the farmers can't be put down by the Traveler's big adjectives. more fortunato who survived the strug gle, take up the watchword “Honor to our illustrious dead,” and join hands with tho veterans and with tho noble women, who aro ever foremost In pa thetic deeds; and altogether determine that the monument shall be built, the grandeur of which can be measured by the effort pot forth by the south acting In harm 'nious concert. A monument will, In any event, bo be orcctcd, but It should be such a one as will represent not only the command ing features of the illustrious dead, but the veneration In which he was held by the people for whom he sacrificed bis all. Let’s raise MOO,000 In the south by the Individual contribution of every man, woman and child in the land. Will the veterans and the ladles memo rial associations lead off in this enter prise? Sunday's edition of the Tribuno-of- Rome Is a handsome paper of sixteen psges, and shows that Rome ss well as Amerlcus can provide s big newspaper on occasions. What Editor Branham says of Rome has been ss truthfully said by the Times of Amerlcus merchants: The liberality cf the merchants and other bvaln-semen of Rome bse made!hie special edition poeelble. For their hearty support the Tribune thank* th< m, and It pledges Itself to labor In their Interest In the lutnre with renewed mercy. Backed by such liberal palroae a* It basils to-day, Its efforts will undoubtedly be crowned with eueccee. Mn. Cbauncy M. Depew, inareoent speech, said “the south Is the truly and typically Atnerioan portion of tho coun try.” What Chauncey says Is true, but It has taken him a long time to find it ont, Tbe south is Amerlcun because the tide of foreign Immigration has sought other sections of tbe country, and a short time ago one of the leading journals of the northwest commenting on tie foot that Americans were being rapidly crowded out by the steady Influx of Germans and Scandinavians, ex- pressed the opinion that the day would come when the south would be the bul wark of American institutions. GEORGIANS ON TBE SPEAKERSHIP. Congressman Tom Winn drove down from bis home In Gwinnett yesterday and spent the pay among bis friends !n Atlanta. “Yes, I was in Washington," said he, “for some weeks during the closing days of the last congress, and from what I gathered from the old and new members alike I do not think there is any doubt, of Mr. Crisp's election as speaker. Nine- tenths of the old members I talked with said lie was by odds the best equipped man for tbe office. He Is conservative, just, well balanced and a thorough par liamentarlan—the very best man in the House for speaker. And he will got it. Gallant Ben Clifton came up from Sa vannah and apent the day among Ills friends hero yesterday. "I don't know anything about politica now,” aaid ho. “Indeed, I have been too busy since the legislature adjourned to think of poli tics. The legislature can be relied upon to redistrict the state satisfactorily, and and I shall be perfectly satisfied with what they do. The Brunswick people seem to want to get a district they can call their own. That la, they want to cut loose from Savannah, and I suppose they will do It. No, I am not thinking about running for congress next time, am young enough to wait, but I am go ing on to Washington juat before the next congress meets, to put In some work for Crlip for speaker. He is the the biggest man In Georgia to-day, and he must bo the next speaker of the of the house of representatives.” “What do I think of Crisp’s chances?' said Congressman Rufe Lester, of Sa vannah, who called up to see about that cohtcmpt caso yesterday, “I simply feel confident that be will be speaker of the next house of representatives. Xo, Tom Watson’s letter will not injure Ills chances in the least.”—Atlanta Consti tution. The Dotiglassvillo sensation which lias kept the gossipers of that place busy for tho past three weeks lias settled down, and tho conclusion is that Mr. Dorsett and Mrs. Massey went off together and are either in Cuba or South America Mr. Dorsett leaves a wife and two children behind him, and Mrs. Mas sey, who is a widow, leaves two chil dren. Tltelr friends in Doughlassviile have given up all hope of thotr return, and the families are resigned to the desertion. Here's the way a Georgia editor talks about the recent row kicked up by some Atlanta divines about the observance of memorial day on Sunday: We do not object to our arcnchers being extremely ploue. They ought to be model*, but we hope never to see the time when we are a# scrupulous that w* cannot »t any time upon Sunday or any oilier day—with cannon and mtiiketry—with dram and (lie— orbrsaaband, on horseback nr on foot—do honor to tbe memory of our rnllen heroes. Tux republicans have about given up all hope of carrying Iowa, next fall, owing to the fact that the farmen will bold a nominating convention In the first week in June and place an Inde pendent ticket in tbe field. Tho strength of the republicans was among the farmers, and now that they are form- lag themselves Into an independent party, the republicans have no show whatever to win the coming elections.
