The United State, and Italy should try and console each other. Both are confronted with an empty treasury. The trouble in the Pennsylvania coal regions grows worse each day, and the eviotions are causing some bloody fights. Henky Wattekson suggests that the state of Pennsylvania maintain a stand ing army for the suppression of Its.own disorders. Is Montgomery yesterday the full ticket nominated by the Democrats for city council was elected with Mr. Crom- melin for mayor. If cheap clothes make a cheap man, as the republicans argue, it is just as fair to assume that the cheap sugar which our children eat makes cheap colic. The nobility of England has been tackled by the grippe with fatal results In many cases. The grippe is no respec ter of person and king anti peasant alike perform the nasal act. Heavy frosts and Ice are reported from the northwest, and the damago to the fruit is great, while down this way wo aro enjoying the dellghtfut sunshine and eating fruits and vegetables from the gardens. Ahiievii.i.e will have a hank The organization was perfected last week, with S. P. Uassetcr, president, and S. N. Mitchell, cashier. The capital stock is $50,000 and it will be a branch of the People’s bank, cf Atlanta. The Xcw York legislature failed to make an appropriation for the World’s fair, but it will haro an opportunity to do so next year. It will not do for all the states to tarn their becks to Chicago. It cannot rnn the fair alone. Phesident Haiibisox and party are now In Oregon, and will soon journey towards tlm cast again. In the mean tlmo Blaine Is holding the fort In Wash iogton, but all important matters are delayed unlit Benny’s return. Last Sunday's Issue of the Brunswick Times announces a change in the edito rial management. Sam Whitmire retires and McK F. McCook takei charge. We regret to lose the ons from the editorial craft and welcome the other into the fold. The officers of two banks, one In New York and the, other In Philadelphia failed to Immigrate to Cenada after their crookadneae, and have been arrested. The charge If making false entries on their boolu for the purpose of deceiving the bank exaizgners. The trial of E. A. Mnderwood for the mnrderof Alex Sayre, some six weeks ago, was began in Atlanta Monday. From the faots published at the time of the killing Underwood wilt probably follow in the track of Osborn, nnlesa something new Is developed In the trial. Macon's water supply is running short and it la now thougbtthst the ervoir will have to be filled from the river at a point above the eitr. The ap pearance Is not so good as that from the epringi from which the ■ apply le now taken, bat it is said to be just as pare. The Georgia convention for the World’s fair will'meet In Atlanta to-day. It will be a notable meeting, and mueb la expected of it The foundation for Georgia's representation at the World's fair will be laid, and the peopio of the whole state should sanction the work by substantial support and assistance ABOUT THE SPEAKERSHIP. The attack, of the st Loul. Republic upon 1 Judye Crl.p, and 'heir forced etT.t-U to boom Mr. Mill, for speaker of the next houeeof representative, are ex' remely ridiculous The last 1. that beta of tan to one are offer ed In Wa.htnct'in that Mills will be elect'd speaker. The Republic can get all the bets that It will take at eveu flture.. Crl.p," It eontlou-s to cry, "esnoot be elect ed because bs bas not been an enthusiastic tariff reformer; because he has nut been In favor of the repeal of the Internal revenu tax on tobacco: because he waa ready to vote fnrthe Blair bill; beconse he supported pro hibition by the local option route In Gear- Els, and sapp tried prohibition In consrest by being one or the fmr democrats In the house who volet for the original packs-e bll'." Allof which Is the veriest bosh. Ad It giteson tossy that t> re- Georgia membo a are for Mills and will votefor him—another piece of news tothe GscnrU members. Were the election to lie hold to day, no one know* better than the writer of t -e above that Judge Crlspwout I getdoubte ns many votes ee any other eendldsta In the r ice, and his eleetloa Is now a certainty.—Atlanta Const I tuI Ion. The Constitution is right Judge Clias. F. Crisp will be the next speaker of the house, and the useless attacks of Charles Henry Jones will only tend to make him stronger. It will bring more prominently before the people the splendid work be accomplished in his almost slngle-hand- ed tilts with the tyranlcal speaker, who occupied the chair in the last House, which alone, If he bad done nothing else, would entitle him to recognition'at the hands of his party. The cranky utterances of Charles Hen' ry will have little weight with the mem- bora who compose the next House, and the only possible object of the attack Is to keep his own name from sinking into oblivion. But Charles Henry Jones can he for given when it is known that he inherits his Insanity. The people of Talbotton, Ga., where ho spent the early part . of his life, are well acquainted with his family his tory. Ills father, Dr. John Jones, while a good man, had his peculiarities, which seem to be more perfectly developed In his son. The Doctor was not considered perfectly sound in mind, at least bis life at that time was not such ns to create that impression, and lie was always looked upon as a man who, though learned in his profession —ho was a prac ticing physician—was regardod by his neighbors as out of the usual run, and if ho were alive to-day would he termed a crank. ' It must be from this source that Charles Henry gets his crazy streak. THE TRENCH MASSACRE. The slaughter of men, women and children at Fourmles, France, by troops | on May day islikely to bring on a serious j eruption among the laboriny classes of j that country. The soldiers claim that 1 they were justifiable in firing Into the mob, as they were closely pressed, but there is no excuse for killing the Inno cent children, and it teems that they should hare been able to repel the wo men without the use of their guns. The laboring classes, not only at Fourmles, but also la all the labor centers in France, aro terribly Incensed, and active preparations are being mado to attack the regiment which fired the fatal shots. Dynamite, in large quantities, Is being; imported from Belgium, and it looks very much as If there would be lively times at Fourmles. But whatever the results of the inquiry aro there is no doubt that a feeling of bitterness against, the troops, and even against the government, has been arous ed that will not be allayed in a long time. It will show Itself in riots and other labor disturbances of one kind and another. Io all the labor centers of France there Is an unmistakable desire to avenge those who were shot to death at Four mles, and It is not improbable that the killing and wounding of so many men, women and children will cause a deplor able condition of affairs throughout France. If Alger baa the bee in hit bonne*-, however, he will decline to accept the appointment. The Michigan legislature bas adoped a new method of cbooetng presidential electors. The electors, Instead of being elected on n general ticket from the etate at large, will be choeen by districts. Each congressional district will elect one, and the whole etate bee been divid ed into two districts, each of whloh wiU choose an elector. The effect of tide ar rangement will be to give the Democrats at least half of the presidential elector*. The republicans of Pennsylvania are glad, doubtless, that G. W. Delamater, their candidate for governor at the elec tion last fall, waa not elected. Immedi ately after the eleotion the bank of Meadvillo, of which he was the head, failed. And tlio follnro was one that has never been satisfactorily explained. All the circumstances connected wit lit have an ugly look The liabilities were about $1,100,000 and the assets look rather slim jost now. .... The Chicago Inter-Ocean says that the democratic orators are not making such a tintlntabulatiou about tin as they did a few months ago. The orators, how ever, pointed out to the people what a fraud the tax on tio plate was, and the latter aro now making the tintintabula- tlon which Is so disagreeable to the ear* of the republicans. The people are aware of the fact that there Is not a pound of tin mined In title eountry, and the miserable, bulky and coarse stuff ex hibited at republican conrentlons American tin plate is nothing more than American sheet iron oovered with tin from Europe, and It was ths purpose of McKinley when he increased in hie tariff bill the tax on tin plate to compel the people to puruhase the Inferior plate made In thie country, in order to put mlllloni of dollar* In the poekete of a few republican* who are engaged in the manufacture of (beet Iron. The question whether Robert Ray Hamilton Is alive [Is again occupying publlo attention. Hamilton la the man who, It will be remembered, waa a party to a scandal In which a $10 baby was palmed off on him as his own, and tho woman In the case waa sent to the peni tentiary. He went west, and it waa al leged that he waa drowned while cross ing a swift-flowing stream. The body that waa said to bo bla was buried near where it wa* found. Thomas Cooper, b noted Wyoming guide, was present when hi* body waa found, and bo say* that there were circumstances which led him to believe ‘.bat the body was not that of Hamilton. Many believe that Hamilton la In Australia, or some other foreign country, and that be will reappear when the public he* forgotten the scandal. A sharper played several clerks In 8avannah In a small way, during mer chants’ week. The man would walk in to a crowded store and purchase some small artlele worth a nickel, handing the clerk a dollar bill and receiving ninety-five cent* in change. The cus tomer etarta out but returns in a hurry and wants* cigar, also requesting to ex change a sllrcr dollar which he throws upon the counter for the dollar bill The clerks very naturally hand out the dollar bill In exchange, and also give ninety five cent* In change for the silver dollar. Some of the clerks could not understand that they had been swindled out of ninety-five cent*. Death has claimed the etxtb victim of the poisoned wedding feast near Lou isville. Mr. W. B. Snook, the bride groom of the occasion, having followed, Friday night, his father and four others of the marriage guests who had gone before. In tbe meantime, the doctor* are (till groping in their labyrinth of threadiest theories. The New York Herald contains this terse deecriptlon of oar popular oon- I am informed that it is by no means | a positive thing that Congressman Jas. H. Blount will not bo In tbe rate next year for renomlnatlon. I understand that he is under obligations to no man not to run again. It Is the public Im pression that Col. Blount will not sook renomlnatlon, and only sought re-cloc- tion last year in order to complete his ambition of sorrlng twenty years in congress. Therefore, if Blount Is in the raco next year there will be lively times Indeed, for it Is generally, believed that Charlio Bartlett, of Bibb, Bob Whitfield, of Baldwin, and Bib Berner, of Monroe, will bo c andidates. There will bo mu sic in tlio air in theslxtli district in 1892. Yet, the congressional reappointment may change the situation some.—Macon | Evening News. Congressman Dolliver, one of the few repulicans in Iowa who managed to escape the democratic tidal wavo last fall, says that Gov, Boles will have to go at tho next election, as the republicans will sweep the state. This boast was made at Washington a fow days ago but since tliep lie has no doubt read iu the papers that the farmors are going to put a ticket In the field at the next state election, and that Boies' chances of suc cess are docidedly mure encouraging than those of tbe republican who will oppoee him. Botes ha* mado a good governor, has given his attention to the needs of the farmers, and there is every reason to believe that hundreds of them will vote for him again. One thing Is certain, however, and that Is, If the democrats tlekct is not successful the republican will not be. The examiner'! report on tbe condi tion of the account* of Commissioner Kolb, of Alabama, baa been made pub llo, and Is a voluminous document. It oovem several columns In tbe Birming ham Age-Herald, and rone through a number of years. There are only a tew minor discrepancies, and tbe prlnolpnl one of these is that Capt. Kolb rode on free pause and charged the mileage np to the state. This, he says, he thought he had a right to do, and still thinks so. Tbe Investigation wu made at bla own request, and the result should satisfy both bis friends and entailts that Capt. Kolb It an honest man.
