In an interview with Mr. M. Callaway, published in The Times-Recohdeii yes terday, that gentleman said among other things that there was considerable activ ity in city real estate, and that a number of deal* were on the tapis. That ho was not far from right in his prediction was shown yesterday in the sale o. two or three desirable properties, to say nothing of several other trades that lack nothing but the signing of the deeds to make their consummation certain. Among the sales reported yesterday was that of a beautiful residence lot on Jackson street, olT the north side of Capt. W. M. Hitt’s property. The lot has a frontage of sixty feet and brought $1,000. Mr. J. W. Stallings was the purchaser, and will at once begin the erection of a very handsome residence thereon. Another desirable piece of store prop erty also ohanged hands, Mr. Walter Brown purchasing from the Americus Investment Company the two stores on Lamar street, at present occupied by Charles Sohrlrer and Sim Jenkins re spectively. Mr. Brown got a bargain in his purchase, paying only $4,500 for this desirable property. He bought It merely as an investment, the price put upon it proving too tempt ing to bo resisted. In a short while the building will be very much Improved and made aa desirable for business as any in that portion of the city. As evi denee of the fact that the purchaser got a bargain, he refused a profit of $500 on the trade an hour afterwards. Among other substantial improve ments contemplated In central property la the erection of a handsome brick block by Mr. L. G. Hudson, on his valu- able vacant property corner of Lee and Jefferson streets. Mr. Hudson has his plans almost matured, and If he fully decides to build may order the work started almost any day. The proposed building will be two stories, with some three or four com modious store-rooms on the first door. The second floor will be fitted up for offices and sleeping apartments, for which there is always such great de mand in Americas, and already Mr. Hudson has had many applications from parties wanting rooms there. All of which bears out the oft re peated statement of Tue Timks-Ke- coHDEit that there are not nearly enough houses in Americus to accom modate the pcoplo who are anxious to come here, and who do oome, even though they are forced to room around town over stores and get their meals as best they can. More houses are a ne cessity, and the sooner they are built the sooner will the olty's population grow as It has never beforo done. Bed Men. The council fire of Kinchefoonee Tribe No. 32, LO.R. And now it Is told that peace once more reigns among the membership of Bluff Springs Primitive Church, at An- dcrsonville, and that the members thereof can use as many lightning rods as they desire. About two weeks ago Tub Times-Re- coiideu published a statement to the effect that one of the members of this church had subjected himself to very severe criticism by putting lightning rods on his barn and dwelling, and that the church proper had been called upon to investigate this seeming act of defiance upon his part of the will of the Almighty, Since then it has transpired that it was not the act of putting up the rods that caused the censure of the flock, but the fact that two or three of the mem bers, as well os the pastor, had defied Providence by having their lives insured. One member of the church, particu< larly devout, thought that it was hardly the proper thing to combat the will of God In this manner, and thereafter re fused' to hold communion with these brethren of his church, and accordingly held himself aloof until the case could be heard by the church in conference. A day or two ago the whole affair was referred to the arbitrament of tile mem bers of the church In open conference, and the matter settled to the entire sat isfaction of all concerned. The members of Bluff Springs church are among Sumter’s best citizens, and they regret that tills little matter at- tained such publicity and In the manner that It did, inasmuch as the pastor and a number of the members have lightning rods on their houses put there for pro tection and not In defiance of Divine power.
