The commencement exercises of the
Americus public schools will bo held
tills year In the new city hall building.
That Is what Chairman Williams, of
the building committee says, and he
does |Ms,updn’ tho. authority of Archi
tect Smith.' ,/ j
This bit of nows will bo gratifying to
the ^people of Americus, especially
tfiose who in past years have holped by
their presence to pack tho opera house
onopiamencemenlday., . j f|< )
Then 'again it Is gratifying to know
that work upon Americus’ handsome
ndtl public building has progressed so
rapidly and satisfactorily, and that it
will soon ho tinished and ready for
hoeupaney.
According to th* terms of the con
tract the building ahould be completed
by June 1st, but owing to numerous
aud unavoidable delays two or three
weeks longer will be required in which
to finish it.
This short delay will be of little mo
ment, however, and by June 15th Amer
icas will have one of the largest, hand
somest and most conveniently arranged
city building* in the state.
And now It baa been decided that the
commencement exercises of our public
scUools.jnitly tho pride of Americus,
will he the occasion of the drat public
assemblage there.
Chairman William* of the building
committee, and President Speer of the
hoard of education discussed the matter
yesterday, and together they called upon
Architect Smith to find out whether ,or
fwl* coujdih* maile ready by
commoucemont day, which is just oi
month off from today.
Mr. Smith was a little In doubt for a
moment as to hit ability to finish the
work within the required time, but
when he saw how anxious the two gen
tlemen were to have the exercises held
in the new building, he promised to do
his utmost to oblige them.
Which means that the work will be
finished by that time, for Mr. Smith will
at onco increase the large force of car
penters aud stonemasons now engaged
upon the splendid structure, and will
hare everything finished and In perfect
order by the day appelated.
The spacious hall in which the exer
cises will be held is in the third story of
the building, and Is capable, of seating
comfortably between 1,500 and 2,000
people. It Is well ventilate! and easy of
aooess, and will serve admirably the pur
pose for which It waalotendod—a plag
for publle meetings generally.
The walls of tho new building have
almost gone up tho, m quiredt hoight,

thing 1 roady will soon bo finished. The
handsome structure of brick and grantee
