' THE AMERICUS DAILY T1MES-REC0RDER: SUNDAY. MAY 1,, 1891. MRE.SHAV, TO BE OR NOT TO BE THAT 18 THE QUESTION WITH THE IOOOS AT SUMTER CITY. Tom Watson's Occupation Gone—A Strange Monster Devouring All the Csnlnee— What he Looks Like—Dog Owners Great' lj Troubled. “THE CHAMPION" Clothier & Outfitter, 111 Forsyth St-. Americas, Oa.. . Every garment is made by the argest New York and other manu- ufacturtrs up to the highest standard of art. No clothing house South of At lanta can boast of such an admirable assortment of MENS. YOUTHS. BOYS & CHILDREN’S SPRING AND SUMMER STYLES. In our line of business wo aro the r ecognized leaders, and we propose to continue to carry off the honors. While we possess all the requisites necessary for the success of a legiti mate and dashing business, WE HAVE THE LARGEST AND FINEST STORE IN THE CITY. WE HAVE THE LARGEST AND FINEST STOCK IN THE CITY, and wo are known throughout this section as the Our friends and the public know that we have for the last 22 years con ducted a live business in Americas, and wo will “win or die” on the field m battle harness before we will sur render our banner on which is written '. ( .V From the southern part of Sumter county comes the most remarkable ports, and that too from reliable sources, concerning a beast of non-descrlpt ap pearance, that Is playing havoc with the ours of high and low degree wherever he goes. For some days it has been evident that some strange fatality was besetting the dogs, many of them disappearing under conditions that Indicated that they were being devoured, as no traces of them were to be found where erst while they roamed In careless happiness, urmindful of Tom Watson’s malicious designs against their beatific existence. In the vicinity of Sumter City, a station just below Americus on the Central railroad, the owners of dogs have been noticing that they were disap pearing at night, amid a series of howls that indicated violence, and when on several occasions owners have rushed out to protect their canino property they have been horrified to see thorn being attacked and devoured by a huge animal, which seemed devoid of fear of man or beast so intent was it on seizing its prey. This beast has been seen by a dozen men, black and white, in the very act of attacking dogs, and has, in ono or two instances, actually followed Its fleeing victims right into a house, and had to be beaten off with chairs to save the dog from being devoured right at its master’s feet. The various accounts of the animal agree in goneral that It is, in ita appear ance, like a monstrous dog so far as con cerns Its body, while it has the head, nose and mouth of a wild boar, and has daws like an eagle on all four feet. The tracks that have been seen by numer ous people in and around Sumter City, are described as resembling those of a wild turkey, only much larger and more hooked claws. It Is not a wild cat, panther, boar nor any other animal that anybody has ever seen; for it hss seized and devoured In a twinkling soveral well trained wild-cat dogs, that had a record of whipping any four-footed varmint that ever roamed these woods, bolting them as if they were mere puppies. The monster appears to have an appe- tltq for dog flesh similar to that which a cat has for a mouse, and will follow them anywhere regardless of people, whom it does not appear to stand in awo of at all. The dogs art) being devoured nightly by the score, and the walls of the disappearing canines can be heard In every direction. In a few weeks more there will not be one left in that part of the country, and the alarm is spreading lest the beast eat up not only the dogs, but may attack other domestic animals and children, as It never hesitates to dash right into a house In pursuit of Its victims. Hunting parties are to be organized at once to go In pursultof the monster, and everybody around Sumter City is determined to catch this strange animal whose appearance and actions are In spiring terror In the homes of the peo ple, no less than among their dogs. So far, it hss made no attempt to at tack anything else, but so ferocious aud powerful does it appear, and so fearless of the presence of mankind, that there Is much apprehension that Its depreda tions will not be muoh longer confined to the dogs.
