The trade, it seems, was perfected Monday, but not until yesterday did President Hawkins, of the S. A. & M. road, who Is now In New York, wire the Information to the general office here. The line that was really purchased ex tends from Omaha to Lyons, a distance of 100 miles, the Western Union already owning the wire between the latter place and Savannah. The price paid for the property was in the neighborhood of #10,000, which was about the cost of construction. The ’ine was built three or four years ago by the S. A. & M. road to bo used in operating its trains and for other pur poses, but as very little business was done outside of the roads's work the en terprise was not very profitable. However, the Western Union was anx ious to get hold of the line.and on several occasions, it is said, an agreement was almost reached between that company and the road’s officials, but for some rea son the trade has always hung fire until day or two ago, when satisfactory terms were agreod upon. The new owners will Bhortly begin the work of improving the line, and will make it one of the best in this part of the state. New and larger posts will be put in all along the line wherever need ed, and the service will bo made first- class in every respect. Besides this the Western Union com pany will also extend the line along the S. A. & M. between Omaha and Mont gomery, Ala., thus giving a through line the entire length of the road from Mont gomery to Savannah, a distance of 345 miles, A line w'll also be built from Cordele to Albany along the new branch road now In operation between those points. The railroad company will hare the privilege of using the wires In operating their trains as formerly, and no change In this respect, as far as known, will be made. If changes of any kind arc in contemplation the fact has not been made public yet. Neither is it known when the purchasers will take posses sion of the line, but this will probably be done In a very short while. In our line of business we are the recognized leaders, and we propose to continue to carry off the honors. Most convenient quarters are being fitted up in that portion of the building formerly used as a sample room, and just as soon as this is made ready the work of moving the office will bogln. There will he no dolay of business caused by the removal, as Postmaster Itouey has so well perfected all necessa ry details that the transfer of all the furniture, boxes, etc., can be made in a few hours and with no inoonvenionce to the publie whatever. The entrance to the new office will be from Cotton avenue, one door north of the ma'n entrance to the hotel. There ample quarters have been provided, and the cliango will prove an agreeable one from the stuffy little building which the business of the postoffice outgrew many years ago. These quarters, however, are only temporary, as Messrs. Johnson & Har- rold will at once begin the erection of the handsome new brick building de signed for that purpose, and which will occupy tlie site of the old office. This work was begun sometime since, and already the basement wails in the rear of the present office have been built up to the first floor. This new building, as is well under- stood, is to form a part of the Forsyth street addition to the hotel building. The plans of the proposed structure are very handsome, and the new building will add vastly to the appearance of that portion of the city. Half of the space on the first floor will be arranged for the postoffice, while the remainder will be elegantly fitted up as a bank building. The rooms overhead will be used as apartments for the hotel. ttookldg Attraction, for Noxt Bea.on—The Colored Exonralon to Savannah—PugU- lata Vl.lt America.—Putting on tho Root of tho City Ball.
