( THE AMERICUS DAILY T1MES-RECORDER: THURSDAY, MAY 21, 1891. LET THERE BE LIGHT wet.l. KNOWN CITIZEN TALKS UPON THE QAS QUESTION, And Propoae, to Subscribe SA.000 Toward. Organizing a New Company—Think. It Will Provo a Paying Investment—Let the Move be Started. “I will subscribe live thousand dollars to the capital stock ot any company that will go to work to givo Amorlcua anoth er gas plant.” Thug spoke one of the most prominent and enterprising citizens of Amerlcus yesterday, and he meant just exactly what he said. “And what of the possibility of organ izing such a company as you propose?” ventured the news man. “Possibility? Why, there's no question whatever upon that score. I know that a company can be organized that will erect a gas plant, and give Amoricus such gas as she never had before if only a slight effort is made to do so.” “And would it be a homo company,” asked the reporter. “To a great extent, yes,” the gentle man replied, “but I am sure that fully one half the amount of the capital stock needed can bo raised outside of AdlQll- Cus, am) with little or no trouble at that, if necessity should require.” “And you think that such an enter prise can be operated profitably here ?” the reporte. asked. “It would be one of. the very best pay ing enterprises in the city. Already, as you are well aware, hundreds of citizens have gone to thetrouble and expense of fitting up their honses with costly gas fixtures, which, under the present con dition of affairs, are utterly useless. These people will patronize a new com pany gladly, as will toores ot others who would use gas If It could be had.” “And I want to add this,” he contin ued, “if the people who own the mains and who hare possession of the franchise granted by the city, ever expect to do anything towards giving the city gas again, let them at least make a begin ning! it that direction, or else get out of the way And Rive some company that will do it a chance. We want gas, and must and will have it." The above, as previously stated, .was spoken by one of the most, prominent businessmen in Amerlcus, and his opin ions as expressed are but the opinions of a hundred others here. For six or eight months, perhaps Jonger, Amerlcus has been without gas, and do'far as la known there Is no pros- peet of ever getting it again very soon. True, it was rumored about the streets some time ago that another company was about to be organized for the pur pose of operating the old plant, but nothing has recently been heard of it As the gentleman quoted above says, hundreds of people have put costly gas fixtures into• their houses, and even though the gas previously furnished was of the most inferior qqality, ft- beat nothing at ail, and even a return to that kind of stuff would be hailed with de- light • ' . Let a determined movement of some kind be mado towards organizing a com pany and starting work again and, as the gentleman already quoted says, “if the present company cannot or will not furn ish the city with gas, let it get out of the way and give those who would do it aohanoe.’.’ . The people want gas and will have it, and little they care wbat company op erates the plant so they get what they need and must hare. PEOPLE TOO KNOW Some Ton han't, Who Como end Co In • Day. An unusually large number of civil cases are to be disposed of, which, with the usual number of criminal cases that appear, promises to keep the court busy for the full term of four weeks, if not longer.
