senger trains: There are hundred- «
locomotives in sendee of al-oui tort,
tons weight, capable of haul ig a train j It takes about three secouds for ainos-
of 100 tons at the average running rate sage to go from one end of the Atlantic
of sixty miles an hour. But that is not cable to the other; this is about 700 miles
the kind of fast train that our railroad
managers want. They are required to
make money for the companies employ
ing them, and they realize that it pays
much better to use locomotives weigh
ing sixty tons that are capable of haul
ing a fast train of 300 tons.
It is a curious study, and one that is
interesting to some minds, to investigate
the rapid speed that might Ik* made with
safety with locomotives having abnor
mally large drivers, but as far as the
bearing on American railroad operating
is concerned, it is just as practicable os
speculations or calculations respecting
the time it would take a balloon of cer
tain proportions to reach the moon.—

A Cinch for the M. D.
A good story couies all tho way from
San Francisco. It is said that a lady ap
plied to her physician in that city for ad
vice and a prescription. He had long at
tended her and her family, and on this
occasion he recommended that she go to
a popular watering place in that part of
the country, giving her a letter of intro
duction to a physician who resided at
tho springs.
On the way there tho lady remarked
to her daughter that as long as her doc
tor had been treating her he had never
stated just what ,vas her ailment. "I’ve
« good mind to ojieii this letter and see
what he says of my case to the other
doctor." Acting on the impulse she tore
open the envelope, and, taking out the
letter, read, "Dear Doctor—Keep the old
lady four weeks, and then send her hack
to me."- Detroit Free Press.
a second.
Iiow a lleautlfiil Flower Was Named.
An old legend tells of two lovers,
walking by the river Ithine. The lady
begged her suitor to pluck a little pale-
bluo flower, growing on the bank. In
doing so, he fell into the water, and was
drowned; but while sinking, ho threw
the flower to her and cried; "Forget me
not!” Thousands of women will never
forget what Dr. Pierce’s Favorite Pre
scription lias done for them. It is pre
pared especially to cure those diseases
from which they alone suffer, and often
in silence, rather than consult a physi
cian—as periodical pains, weak hack,

As early ns the campaign in Spain, in

also in the following reign of ltichnnl
II, the English soldier appears to have
been in white and with a red cross of St.

there is evidence of red being adopted
for a small number of men at least,
when a contingent for tho army of the

The highest place in the world rega
larly inhabited is stated to be the Bud

is about 16,000 feet ubove sea levul. The

15,635 feet. Near it, at the same level,
