SHAW, Men’s, Youths,’ Boys’ and Children’s Mason’s and Dixon's line was wiped out of existence in Americas yesterday. Thoughts of the different sections were scattered to the four winds and tbe bright sun beamed alike on an honored gentleman from tho north and a party of. southern men who bad gathered to receive lii in as their guest. Yesterday Hoa. Amos J. Cummings of New York was tho guest of the Americus Barbecue club. During the years Of its existence this, the only gen uine barbecue club in tho entire country, has ontertained renowned lawyers, rail road magnates and statesmen of wide repute as its guests. But none of these occasions oould compare with that of yesterday, which was the crowning act of the club's members as entertainers. The affair was not burdened with any tiresome formalities. It was a-free-and- easy-everybody-erijoy-yourself affair. And everybody did that very thing, from the club’s distinguished guest down to the old negro who did the ’cueing act on the two fat porkers which were served The fact that Mr. Cummings was to be the club’s guest was enough to draw a good crowd. By 12 o'clock, carriages, wagons and buggies were to he seen moving toward tbe beautiful Magnolia dell, where the barbecue club has its headquarters. Half an hour later forty odd members of the club and as many moregueats had arrived. Durlngtbetime that Intervened between then and the announcement of dinnor an informal re ceptlon was held. Judge Crisp intro duced Mr. Cummings to the arrivals and a few pleasant minutes were passed in words of greeting and in the telling of some good jokes. Shortly after 12:30 President Jossey announced dinner and invited all to gather around the table, where the car casses of two fat porkers done to a turn and cookod in tho best, stylo known to the barbocuer’s art by old Richmond, the colored cook of the club, under the supervision of Messrs. A. J. Buciianan andE. L. Stanfield; myriads of snowy white bread with nicely browned ciusts; any quantity of pickles; a huge pan of tbo most delicious gravy that ever tempted mortal man. and a full supply of those other things which play such a part in tbe meetings of the club were spread out in tempting array. Just be fore tho order was given to charge on the table some one called “Cummings.’’ Tho call was taken up by those who heard it, and the gentleman from Now York rose to the emergency, saying: “I am coming!' He had his bearers then, and he did come with a talk replete with wit, wis dom and well rounded periods. He told of the fact that Georgia had a claim on him, from tho fact that his fatner lived year but left In time for him to be Dorn in New York. Then he spoke of his last trip through Georgia, when be came as a tramp printer, working In Columbus and going from there to Tallahassee, Fla., from sybieh plaeo he went to Ma con on foot, tramping it through Ameri- cus, whloh was then a mere village. Now be was in Americas again. In a proud, progressive city, the borne of the most hospitable of men. A elty that will have a national reputation bocauss it will furnish the speaker of the next house ot representatives. This brought forth a cheer which made the dell sound back the echo. Ho said that Georgia Is the most prosperous of the southern states and that Amerious is one of Georgia's prettiest, pluckiest, most prosperous cities. Hr. Cummings captured the erowd on tbe start, and when he closed by paying ‘Judge Crisp a high oompU- ment declaring that “he Is the most available man for speaker, because of bis fitness for tbe place as a parliamentarian, because of bis services in congress and becanso he is a man who can control the bouse and control himself' and thank ing the Barbecue Club for their Invita tion to test tbelr hospitality, the woods fairly rang as thoy reverberated back the long and hearty applause. Then came dinner. Barbecue waa never cooked better and gravy never had a more appetizing flavor. For thir ty minutes the assemblage feasted. Then the speech making commenced again Judge Crisp making a short talk whloh welcomed Mr. Camming to Americas and made the many friends of tbe speak* er of the next house feel prouder still of him. Judge Allen Fort, Hon, W. , M. Hawkes and Col. Edgar F. Hinton then spoke in the order named. The efforts were aueh as were to have been expeot- ed of those who made them and they tended to add greatly to the pleasure of tbe occasion. Mr. Brooks, of Birmingham, Ala., was then ealled on. He made a few remarks and announced that Alabama’s congressional delegation would vote solidly for Judge Crisp for speaker. That brought another burst of cheer- ing. r><rr, ■' Chorister Si Hawkins was called on for a song and assisted by Messrs. I). tlemen, refused, however, to answer to an encore. Another call was made for Mr. Cum* mlngs, who responded by saying that he would sing a song at the special request of Judge Crisp. Ho explained that It was not a song but a hymn, not a hymn but a song, at any rate he would sing, so he gave the crowd a genulue treat In tbe way of a negro camp meeting snatch, which he rendered in a manner that would have brought credit to George Wilson or A1 Fields. By a unanimous vote Mr. Cummings was declared a jolly good fellow and made a member of the Americus Barbe cue Club for life, without having to un dergo tho regulation initiation ceremony, an honor never before conferred on any one. Then toasts wore drank to Judge Crisp and Mr. Cummings. One was proposed by Mr. Cummings, tho other by Dr. W. P Burt. That ended the most enjoyable affair ever hold in Americus, and Mr. Cum mings was kept busy for tho next ten minutes shaking hands and exchanging good-byes with those gathered there. Just before Mr. Cummings entered the carriage whloh was to take him to the train, Mr. B. H. Jossey, the presi dent of the Barbecue Club, presented him as a souvenir of tho occasion with the knife which has been used in carving meats ever since the club's organization. This was accepted in a neat speech, and Mr. Cummings was immediately driven to tbe Central dopot to take the train for Boston. Never has an occasion so pleasant been known in Americus, and President Jossey and those who assisted him de serve every congratulation on the splen did manner in which they managed tbo affair. Call and see our birthday rings.. James Fricker & Bro. They Have Accepted. If it Is held this barbecue will be an alliance affair to which everybody will be invited. To say that the alliance- men of Sumter county will have It In charge is to guarantee that tbe barbe cue will be the highest kind of a suc cess. In case the barbeoue is held, and' there Is but littlq doubting that it will, the day will be set for sometime in July and the alllancemen of the neighboring counties will be invited. That will mean a large erowd Of visitors to Amer ious. Left For Boston. Hon. Amos J, Cummings left yester day for Boston, after a stay of several days with Judge Crisp.
