It is now generally agreed that the
reason the Itata was so long about giving
itself up was that it could't find the

Senator Quay asserts that he is on
good terms, sboth with Mr. Blaine and
the president. Senator Quay evidently
lorea Mr. Blaine the best.
“We will sweep the country,” says
Senator I’cfTer, “as the cyclone sweeps
the western praries.” We don't want
any cyclones down south.

The Hon. Matthew Stanley Quay

pective candidates to keep on good

It is of much Importance that Jason
“stood With uncovered head.” It Is in
terring to know that he stood at all;
and most intensely interesting to know
that Grant finished John Brown's
work.

Such people do very little harm if

True, a self-respecting past might object
to being buried alongside the vulgar
fanatic, who lost his neck in search of
notoriety in the vicinity of a certain old
ferry on the Potomac river: but that
doesn't make any special difference so
long as the past is buried.
.Seriously: Jason Brown ought to go
back to the Pacific slope and hold his
tongue; and he might as well take back
with him the knowledge that the south
doesn't care two straws what th* “sons
And daughters and grandchildren of
John Brown” may think of this section
of the American Union. It is time
Jason Brown and tbe whole world td un

THEY dbead the electric light.
The simple people In some of the hi
terior provinces of Germany and Austria
are reported as making a stouts tight
against the electric light. The tarnal
thing seems to them uncanny, awful and
ominous. They know what a penny dip
mcqns and have lighted their way to the
glare with it for many generations.
But this carbon burner, with its bright,
supernatural flash, Us occasional crack
ling, as though then were imps in the
air and they all bad tbe colic—well, it's
too much for their equanimity, and If a
protest doesn't work it is possible that
they may resort to violence.
Modern science and modern Improve-
ments are always in a fight of that kind.
When steam waa introduced there were
* good many wiseacres who shivered at
the sacrilege and predicted disaster.
They had, to surrender, however, and
these good folk will do the same after a
while and wonder why they were silly
enough to oppose tho innovation.
The temperament of American, Is
rather different. Wo - don’t like old
thing! or old ways. On the contrary,
we are eagerly interested In telephones,
telegraphs, klnetographs, microphones,
phonographs and all the other “phones’
and “graphs” which are pecking their
way through the shell. We are In an
awful hurry for sonje one to Invent
eheap way to store electricity whleh will
drive ns across tbe ocean in five days,
and we don't want to die until we have
made at least one trip to tbe clouds In a
flying machine.
Berlin has as many electrical 'institu
tion, as there are in New York and Lon
don,'and tho march of solence will soon
dag ont the oltfand ring in the new.

tired of his chatter, have resorted to
persecution, stone throwing, mud throw

of threats, all of which are both foolish
and stupid. To tar and feather such a

make a martyr of him. Tbe world is
made that way and It can't be unmade
by a rabble.
Gentlemen, let Scbweinfurth severely

that the best means of getting rid of a
creature of that kind is to give him all
