A SMIRCHED PR INCH.
To those who $ave closely followed
the testimony in the suit of Sir William
Gordon Camming against a number of
rather fishy aristocrats, of both sexes,
the verdict in favor of the defendants
could not have been a surprise.
The plaintiff in the case, a dislin
guished officer in the British army, a
man of high birth and ample fortune,
was, with the prince of Wales and sever
al other titled and untitled notables, a
guest at the country home— Tranbycroft
—of the Wilsons, a wealthy family who
appear to owe their social position
chiefly to the favor of the Prince.
The time of the party at Tranbycroft
seems to have been pretty much occu
pied at the race track and in playing the
seductive game of baccarat for pretty
high stakes, the meu and women, and
the youngster of tho family, being all
participators. A number of tho party,
including the Wilsous. who wore tho
hosts, charged that they had detected
Sir William Gordon Gumming cheating
in the game; and indeed, they pretty
clearly proved tiie charge, if their evi
dence is to bo considered, and they were
not actually guilty of a conspiracy to
ruin a gallant soldier, a gentleman of
high rank and the highest social posi
tion, whoso previous career lias been
one of great brilliancy and unsullied
honor.
It is remarkable, however, that tho
sympathy of tho Britisli public appears
to bo largely witii Gordon Gumming, nnd
and that, while after tho jury had gone
against him, lie walked forth erect from
tho court room with unflinching eye,
and amid the loud and general approval
of tho populace, while the defendants,
who had gained the leg.il victory sneaked
away like so many convict*.
How is tliis to be accounted for?
Tho English people love a brave inan,
and they are not in the habit of going
back on a splendid follow, who lias
gained their hearts by his valor, gener
osity and cordial manners toward the
common people for any small matter.
But it must be considered that it is uo
small matter for n man, such as the
plaintiff in tliis case, to he caught cheat
ing ids friends iu social games of cards.
However, be that as it may, and though
Sir William Gordon Gumming will, un
questionably, bo expelled from tho clubs
and otherwise socially ostracised, there
is no question that lie lias a strong
party of tho aristocracy at Ills back, and
that tho British peoplo aro standing by
him with marked enthusiasm.
Taking a view of the whole matter, it
is a most disgraceful episode in English
social life. Tho man who has tho sym
pathy of tho public, has been virtually
convicted of the ineauest sort of cheat
ing; the defendants have been discredi
ted and disgraced, while tlio Prince of
Wales, the whilhom friend of tiie un
fortunate baronet and who turned
against his friend in his sorest hour, vi
olating his pledge for the purpose of
disgracing 1dm, lias been shown to be a
common rako and gambler, circulating
amongst tiie country home* of the gen
try with id* gambling apparatus and'
playing banker first In one place and
then another. •* *
But one lino figure stand* out in this
disgraceful drama of Tranbycroft, that
of Sir Edward Glarkc, the attorney for
the plaintiff. This brilliant and distin
guished barrister, paid hi* attentions, in
hi* speech to the jury, to tiie prince of
Wales iu a manner which is likely to im
press that personage with the fact, that,
true and loyal as tho English peoplo aro
to tho mounrchy, and sonsiderato as
thoy aro of tho dignity and honor of the
royal family, there lias arisen in that
great ompire a spirit which will sustain
such attack, even upon the princes who
dosccnd from the high and honored place*
to which they were born to engago in
the practices of rakes, roysterers ami
gamblers.
To conclude, the fact is remarkable,
that the swindler in this business bolds
the best position before tiie people of b}*
own country and of the world, and the
princo of Wales, tiie heir of the British
empire, the most sorry and disgraceful.
There is some doubt as to the actual
guilt of Sir William Gordon Cumroing.
There is no question as to the character
of the amusements aud occupations of
the prince of Wales.
THK “FAKE" LIAR 8TII.I. LIVES.
Joe Mulhatton may be in a Chicago in
sane asylum and the Milan, Tenn., liar
may have been suppressed by the Nash
ville papers, but there are yet plenty of
lineal descendants of these two menda
cious characters. For instance, the am
bitious eon of Munchausen who tele
graphs that “a swarin of bees alighted
on the inside of tiie roof of a fast traiu
on the rennsylvauia railroad a few
days ago ”
*1 he *»ory further goes that the engi
neer stopped the train and got out of the
cab until the owner could hive the
swarm. The engineer declined to pro
ceed with the train until the bees were
moved, for fear that if he did they might
administer a stinging rebuke.
St. Deter will administer a stinging re
buke to tlio sacrilegious sou of Belial
who “got off’ that whopper—sure!
A SENSIBLE YOUNG WOMAN.
That was a wise young woman who
advertised for a farmer as a husband.
She knows that the farmer Is the coming
man. She wants to get into tho alli
ance, both matrimonial and agricultural,
at once.
In tho past, the farmer was consider
ed undesirable by husband hunting girls.
Then they reasoned that a farmer’s wife
bad to work too hard, and was deprived
of the pleasures of fashionable society
aud fine dress, while the wife of a city
man lived for plcasuro only. But now,
with a woman’s quick intuition, they
can see that the farmer is the coming
man, that he may soon enjoy advantages
above all other men in the way of bor
rowing money from ITncle Sam at two
per cent, and in the holding of all the
fat offices Girls, keep your loving eyes
on tho farmers.
Skvkuai. persons were recently
seriously and two fatally poisouedat
Pittsburg as the result of eating smoked
fisli, an examination of which showed
that it was unfit for human food before
it was cured. There is very little differ
ence in principal between putting
arsenic iu an enemy’s coffee and sending
poisonous stuff, in the form of food,
broadcast through tiie markets of tiie
country. The difference is in degree,
for tho man who commits a definite
crime on account of a definite enemy is
rather more respectable than the one
who hazards the life of Innoceut persons
whom lie lias never seen for the sake of
a few moan dollars. Before the country
is many years older there will be more
stringent legislation governing the pro
duction ami sale of food, and theso will
be enforced, for the abuse strikes home
to every man.
JUDQlNu from developments, the
“highest social circles’’ do not so much
object to gambling or cheating at cards.
It Is the getting caught which is the dis
grace they dread.
