Much has been said .of late about
"bleeding Kansas.” Our people are
called upon to extend their sympathies
to the farmers of Kansas. But are the
conditions so pitiful In Kansas as we
have been led to believe? Our own
“Bill Arp” has been on a trip to Kansas
and be was surprised to see so much
prosperity. Everybody seemed to be in
comfortable circumstances. Ksnsas is a
new country and Its grand development
may have necessitated the loan system
and mortgages. But let “Bill Arp”
speak:
“You read a good deal about tbe Kan
sas mortgages on tbe farms, but those
very mortgages have built up and devel
oped tbe courtry and the farmer haa got
the benefit without Interest. Host of
them had nothing to at irt nn and they
have managed to keep tlielr farms foi
■lx or eight or ten years and if they
have to give them up they generally
find a new creditor who will try them
again. They are not In the pitiful con
dltion you read about, but they belong
to tbe alliance and will kic k up a dust
amoDg the politicians. What they want
or will try to do to better their condi
tlons has not yet developed, but a man
with a big debt banging over his home
has no particular attacbmerts to the old
parties and is ready to join a new one
that will promise him relief. Tbe alli
ance will sweep this country for a time,
but what it will accomplish remains to
be seen.”
Why should Kansas demand southern
sympathy? Did not her agricultural
adventurers build neat barns and fine
bouses and bon ow the money to do so
with?
When our fathers, even with negroes-
as property, settled in Sumter, Lee and
Dougherty they built modest bouses and
let speculation alone. They did not,
though desirous to get rich, become
patrons of loan associations.
And these Kansas farmers have been
caught In tbelr own trap. While they
went into agricultural speculation they
sent high tariff men to congress. Their
representatives aided in raising tariff
rates so high that foreign governments,
aroused to retaliation, refused western
bacon Hence fall In price and I be
Kansas farmer short on money.
Now that distress has come Kansas
calls upon ns of the south to come to
her rescue and help het to repudiate her
debts. . When tbe south was made the
whipping post of federal revenge for so
many years, Kansas came not to our re
lief.
It Is olslmed Kansas Is now con
verted. As one swallow doea not make
a summer, so one election day does not
determine a fixed policy. Ingalls owes
bis defeat more to bis opposition to
woman’s suffrage than any other cause.
On July 14, Americus will have the
grand rally. Tbe ball will open here.
Wo will give every body a cordial recep
tion. Let every body come. But why
called “alliance rally?" Rally against
whom? Against the republican party?
As one people, with a common Interact,
we hare long ago wanted that It Is a
rally against those not In the order? The
laws of the order forbid nnlvenal mem
bership. It is a rally against our old
time nnity? None of us know. Let us
preserve our unity. We an too muoh
alike In political aspirations to allow
imaginary differences to divide us. Let
us remember the republican party is not
dead. People talked flippantly of seces
sion and now talk about breaking the
“Solid South."
