Va.,) Gazette says: “The people and the press of this state are almost unanimous In favor of Grover Cleveland for president In 1892. Probably no other living man I* as popular, or has more ardent admirers. He will get the unanimous vote of the state at the next convention.” The Charleston, (S. C,) News aDd Courier says: “Practically, the entire newspaper press of the state is for Cleveland, and all the political influ ences, outside of the alliance, are solid ly arrayed on his side. Taking one con sideration with another, however, I would say that South Carolina Is reas onably safe for Cleveland.’’ The Courier-Journal: “There is some scattering opposition, but the Kentucky democracy, as a whole, is decidedly in favor of Cleveland. The Republic, of St. Louis: Grover Cleveland Is the only man considered at thistlme by Missouri democrats In con nection with the prealdention nomina tion It is like the old race in which Eclipse was first, and the rest nowhere. Palmer, of Illinois would hare e strong following If he were a young man, and it is not Impossible he msy figure in the nominating convention. The Austin, Texas, Statement: “Yes, Texas democrats will support Cleveland in spite of the silver qneation, which la the only bitch.” The Columbus (Ohio) Press: “Except for the Ciooinnatl, or McLean, faction, Ohio democrats are overwhelmingly in favor of Cleveland for president. When he was here at Thurman's banquet last fall he received attentions, which amounted to a great ovation. He is a great man; a prime favorite with Gover nor Campbell’s friends, sava McLean’s small following.' The Terre naute Gazette: “We think Indiana democrats almost unanimously for Cleveland.' The Indianapolis Sentinel: “Demo cratic sentiment throughout the state Is overwhelming for Cleveland as against any candidate from outside of Indiana.” The Springfield (III.) State Register “Illinois will aopport Grover Cleveland, but, in my jodgment, will, In case he Is nominated,give him its electorial vote.” The enthusiasm with wbloh Mr. Cleve land’s name is redelved by the demo crats, whenever mentioned In the gen eral assembly now in session, jastifle* me In snyiog that the democrats of the toe battle begun. The republican convention of Ohio has nominated William McKinley, ac cording to the programme mapped out, for governor, and it la pretty certain that the democrat* will nominate Gov ernor Campbell for re-clectlon. The light In Ohio this fall is far more than local In its bearings. It Is the first great preliminary battle previous to the national light of ’92, and as the Issues of this contest are identical with the para mount questions of the coming presiden tial canvass, the interest of the entire country Is more or less excited as to the result. McKinley is looked upon very natur ally as the personification and embodi ment of bis own tariff bill, and the fight is to be waged almost solely npon this issue. The republicans, not only of Ohio but of the entire country, fully re alize that upon his success or defeat lies the fate of their party In the presiden tial election. If McKinley Is downed In Ohio this fall, It will be defeated in November, '92 before the people at large. It will be remembered tbat McKinley was defeated in bia own Congressional district last fall by Warwick, a demo crat; and, aside from a few local dissen sions in the democratic ranks, we can see no probable reason why Ohio will not go democratic again this year. Governor Campbell has made an ex cellent executive, and is very strong with the country people, the farmers and the workingmen. He baa made enemies of a few corrupt office-holders in Clncidnati, but this very fact has made him solid with other counties throughout the state, and he will very likely poll many conservative republican votes, who do not believe in the McKin* ley robber tariff. Even so rabid a re publican sheet as tho Commercial Ga zette, says of Campbell: ••Up In thentatethe people seem to admire him lor the enemies be has inode dowa here, and those people are shout right.'* There is another feature that will en ter into the approaching contest in Ohio, which would seem to favor the demo crats. Tbat is the part the alliance peo ple propose to take In the fight. They have given It out that they propose to take au Interest in the campaign, and will have something like 300 speakers in the field. This number of farmer advo cates talking to farmers all over the state, cannot fall to have a powerful ef fect upon the vote of the state, and it cannot well be seen bow they can con sistently vote tor McKinley with whose views they are directly antagonistic.
