Amerlcus will yet have that much
needed board of trade.
So aay the men who were appointed to
take the matter in charge and canvass
the city for members. These men will
soon have the work mapped out for
them finished and there will be nothing
left but for the board to organize and get
down to business.
One of the gentlemen who was ap
pointed on the committee to get up
members for the board of trade inform
ed a Tiues-Recoudkb reporter that the
committee bad met with first rate suc
cess in securing members. This gentle- ]
men also said that the committee would
have made Its report already had It not
been for unavoidable absence from llie
city some of the members of the com
mittee whom the others wanted to'con
fer with before they look any definite
steps in tbe matter. They will be ready
to make this report shortly and then
Amerlcus will have the board of trade
which abe lias so long needed,
Te many benefits that are to be de
rived from sucli au organization are too
patent to need repetition here. All over
tl.o country boards of trade are being
organized in the cities and towns Where
nune exist, and those that have already
been organized are doing a yeoman ser
vice for tlie places where they have their
being.
Americus stands in as great need of a
board of trade os does auy city in the
country.
Just now there is much important
work for such an organization, since
Americus is, comparatively speaking, at
tbe very beginning of tbe coming in of.
her tide of prosperity, and since she is
attracting widespread interest in com
mercial circles.
At Lockport, N. V., a place of about
tbe same size as Americus, a board of
trade was organized March 23, of this
year. The following address to the
members of that board applies equally
as well to Americus, and it will be in
teresting reading:
To tbe husinesa men of the city of
Lockport: In every progressive city of
the Union there is found established a
board of trade, business men's, associa
tion or some similar organization, hav
ing for its objects the promotion of the
general Interests of the city, the encour
agement of public enterprise, the pre
sentations of tbe attraction! and ad
vantages of the city to non-reeidents
looking for some eligible place In which
to locate and inducing them to oome
there, and In fact seeking to increase tlie
prosperity of the city, Its wealth and
population in every direction, Sodh an
organization Is the Buzlneas Men’s as
sociation of the city of Lockport. It
now baa a membership of over one hun
dred and fifty of tbe leading men of the
city. It can do for Lockport what simi
lar institutions have done elsewhere.
It remains with oar citizens to make its
grand success which they can do by join
ing it and attending Its meetings and
contributing Individual effort to attain
the alms It hae in view. Every citizen
in harmony with It laudable objects Will
be welcome as a member. We conclude
with this quotation from tho by-laws of
tbe Boston Merchants’ association:
“In no walk of life Is tbe value of as
sociation more clearly demonstrated
than among the mercantile community.
Tbe motto, ‘in union there Is strength’
dally receives new conflrmaUon; and It
is only by tbe united efforts of onr mer
chants,at tbe centers of trade that the
great questions of transportation, Insur
ance, telegraphy, tbe rights of creditors
and debtors and kindred subject! which
appeal directly to the Interests and Wel
fare of the mercantile community can bo
settled. Tear by year the Importuned of
intelligent concentrated notion becomes
more apparent. This association, In
common with kindred organizations,
seeks by a community of Interest, to es
tablish for Its membership a body of
recognized authority, to whom may he
referred matters of generel Interest." ’
