indictment for larceny. During the day
• rooster was offered in testimony, it
- Mge claimed that the prisoner had
atolen the bird.
Now this rooster, like any other sen
sible bird, kept ita mouth shut and be
haved very nicely indeed during the
trial But wben Judge Bitter.ger called
the prisoner op and p issed senteie-enpon
him the rooster could contain him-elf no

on there came a crow of delight and ex

ling as well as amusing. The crowd
chuckled with suppressed merriment,
and even the stern judge was noticed to
relax bis countenance a little. The uier
riment at length subsided and the r»* **ter
waa voted a dandy. But that historic
bird bad not yet fully demonstrated his
appreciation of the circumstances to his
own satisfaction.
Williams was afterward called up to
receive sentence on another indb-tment,
■id the unsuspecting people were again
almost electrified by bearing another
hearty crow from the rooster. That iiird
was evidently glad that the prisoner was
sentenced and wan tel it understood too.

A Lost Um of Doctors.
The numerous friends of Dr. Irving b.

know that his name appears in the *JB
dal announcement of the spring session
of the medical department of the Uui

A person touching him receives a slight
shock, and if be touches a watch he mag

of electricity's wonderful power.

Nunersl* That Inform.
Perhaps the most ingenious nse ol
numbers to convey information is due to
Mr. Melvil Dewey, state librarian of
New York. He hxs divided literature
into ten great departments and giver
each of them one of the ten nmnerals.
History, for instance, is represented by
nine, and every historical work has nine
for the first figure iu its number.
Tlie second figure denotes the suUli
vision of history to which a work be
longs; seven as a second figure istoarked
upon volumes treating of North Amer
ica. Anotherand similar step gives three
as a third figure for histories of the
United States.
The works of Mr. George Bancroft, as
Mr. Dewey would classify them, wonld
bear the numerals 873. After that num
ber would come the figures pointing out
the shelf on which the volumes were to
be found. To avoid disarrangement, it
is usual in large libraries to leave ample
room for new additions in each depart
meut; the shelves are not permitted to
become quite full.— Youth's Companion.
New Tobk, June 20.—The most
thrilling stories come from Algeria of
the ravages of the locusts.
In many districts not a sprig remains
on the farm and the inhabitants are in a
famishing condition. Their only resort
for food is the locusts themselves, of
which vast quantities are being con
sumed.

As many may know the pronunciation
of the modern Greek language is by ac
cent. and not by quantity, us in England
and America bas been the custom with
ancient Ureek ever since the time of
Eraamtu. the Dutch precursor of Martin
Luther. Of late year* the American
schools have been prononnetng more and
more liy accent, and the custom lias even
invaded England and Germany. Now
it seems that the German scholars In
Athens, noticing the interest taken by
the yonng emperor in mattem of educa
tion, have petitioned him to make the
pronunciation in German schools con
form to the image of the modern Greeks
Were this done it would be much easier
for a German in Greece to understand
the spoken language, which he can read
easily in the uewspapem, but cannot
comprehend when be hears it at his ho
