Some of the southern papers find cause for alarm in certain bold atatementa re- cently made by the Boston Traveller, which go to show that the northern re publicans are planning to take a hand in southern politics, with a view to disrupt ing the democratic party. Using the sub-treasury scheme as an entering wedge, they would split the solid south, and on its ruins re-established negro government Such, at least, would be the ultimate outcome of the success of such a plot for if the republicans should find themselves a little stronger in con gress than they were last winter they would be pretty sure to pass a force bill, and then there would be a general count ing in of negro voters and a counting Ex-Sixator McDonald died at ids home in Indianapolis, Ind., Sunday. The only proper coat to he worn at fashionable evening poker parties is the Prince Albert BAHDSLEY should not be condemned too severely. He would have carroled more if there had been more in sight Vocso Kaiser Wilhelm rebukes his Uncle Wales! It is more than probable that Walea may nest be heard of as “cut- ting a king.” Yestsbdat wasn’t much of a rare day in June. It was well done wsy Into the middle of it It had its best bake on about 1 o’clock p. m. John Suehhan and William McKinley would have made a good pair to travel with Yellowstone Kit in the before- taking and after-taking act A shout poem in the New York Her ald makes the word “more” rlilme with “show.” This is a certain indication that the author la a southerner. tVy Mb. Cleveland is too honest to ac- cept the democratic nomination on a y ^ platform with a free coinage plank, If he ' should be opposed to that policy. Hebe Most, the anarchist, gots a year In prison. His month In the meantime will get a good rest, but how it will breakout when his sentence is upl Judging from the poll of the Georgia editors taken by the Atlanta Journal, the Hill boom in Georgia is very nearly aa large as a pea—Chattanooga Times. The Chattanooga Southern railroad hat been completed and Is In operation from that city to Gadsden', Ala It Is .seventy-two miles long and runs through a flno section of country. Tub state fair seems to be afloat just now with do plsce to rest its head. At lanta, Macon, Augusta and Rome are bidding for the fair, but it will hardly be removed sway from Maoou. Tfb trustees of Wesleyan Female col lego have found it necessary to pais res olutlons condemnatory of a speech made by Colonel John U. Seals before the Altttpnekn association, because Colonel Bests advocated progressive ideas so far as women were concerned. Census Pobteb wants to resign. He hat spent oil of an appropriation of more than six million dollars provided for tak ing the census, and as there Is no moro money in tha treasury ho wants some other fellow to shoulder tho rcsponsl blltty of finishing up the job. A census bulletin, just Issued, shows that in 1889 Alabama produced 010,(WO cubic feet of sandstone, valued at 143,005. If the builders of houses would only uso native stone instead of Importing foreign article no better, these figures could be greatly Increased. As it Is, we are exceeded by fourteen states. Secbrtabt Foster it going to ap point aa female representative on the InunlgreUon board ,Mlss Bose Cleveland, slater of Ex-Presldont Cleveland. She baa been highly endorsed by. almost •vary female organisation. The post tion is, without doubt, the most impor tant ever held by a woman in this country. Sam Small aaya: "I am no duck pad dling around In the puddle of impel nal placidity.” We don’t know w It wash “puddle of Impersonal placl ty" or not, bnt it it evident that Bar. Sam Small has been in some soi£ of a “puddle” for quite a while, and is little prospect ot his getting bii out soon, unless he mends bis ways. .Uigur. Gov.. Jones, of New York, very anxious to get the gubernatorial nomination, and speaking of his fitness for the place said that the people knew that he was not a great man bnt that be was honest. Mr. Jones it a curiosity as a politician, because the majority of them think they are so great that Julius C«sar would appear as a pigmy besido out of white voters. I According to the Traveller the enemy lias been running his mines first under the old palmetto stato, and claims to have been largely instrumental In bring ing about the political earthquake of 1800. But as that event did not affect the solidity of the South Carolina dem ocrats In their relation to national pol'- tics, It does not appear that the New Englanders gained anything by what they may have done. The causes which led to tho election of Tillman and Irby were so deep seated that outside influ ences could hardly have affected the re sult. But if the Bostonians, lu their eagerness for mischief making, saw fit to coatrlbuto money towards Tillman’s we may be sure that every dollar of It was thankfully received. The Traveller openly avows that “Bos ton took a baud in South Carolina poli tics last year, through the judicious use of money aud Influence,” and that object was to encourage tho allianco movement and split the democratic party, in the expectation that “it would tend to break up a tyrannical solid south.” According to the same authority, “much more ex tended preparations are being made for tho next campaign In South Carolina under the skillful leadership of ex-Gov. Long at the Boston end of tho line, and of J. Hendrix McLane of Columbia, S. C., at the othor end.” Mr. McLane Is to bo supplied by tho Boston patriots with money “for the organization of alliance clubs.” With a candor which could not be surpassed, the Traveller says: Mr. McLsue’s uUInnco tendencies would shook his Boston associates under ordinary clrcmn.tances, but they sro willing to Join hands with him and tolerate theerudltles of the alliance to beat the democrats. Those Boston mor.'lsts believe that while republl- caalsm “pure and simple” will never prove acceptable to the southern democraev, their organization can easily b > dl,Integrate I by some othor political force like ha', ot the alliance. This moral plot ot tho “Boston moral- Ists" is almost oa bald aa that which re sulted in making a tea-pot of Boston har bor. The Traveller's brazen avowal of it ought to be placarded throughout South Carolina. “Crudities of the alli ance” should' be printed In capitals. These Bostonians regard tho alliance with contempt, and they hold the snb- troasury scheme as sheer madness. They feel sure that the alliance will never car ry Its points, but they would use the numerical strength of the alliance to deal a staggering blow at southern dem ocracy, With their thirty plecos of silver they would induce the alliance men to betray their own political party and dig their own political graves. The Traveller deserves thanks for having laid bare this diabolical plot. CAMPBELL IN TIIE rHAT. Gor. Campbell lias convinced the re publicans, as well as the men of his own party, that lie is a fighter, and that lie Intends to wear war paint from the be ginning to the end of the Ohio cam palgn. The bitterly partisan speech of McKinley on the occasion of his nomi nation has aroused the gallant demo- crat, and he has taken the field and plunged Into the fray. Thursday night he made a speech to his friends Id Cincinnati, lu which be expressed his opinion of the crowd of ward politicians, beaded by John Me Lean, in very strong language. Be also declared that the democrats of the great state of Ohio would not allow themselves to he controlled by a small faction in Hamilton county, and if that county sent a number of delegates to the convention in excess of its quota, that they would not be admitted to the floor. Gov, Campbell then said that the democratic convention would have 000 delegates and he would be nominated for governor and be elected. He seems to have no doubt of his abil ity to carry the state, because with the single exception of Hamilton county, the democrats are aroused, united and hard at work and the party will make great gains in the rural counties. The leading democrats are supporting Gov. Campbell warmly, and while they fully appreciate the fact that the campaign will be the hottest In the history of the state, they bellevo the democratic ticket will be victorious, because the secret ballot law will prevent the republicans from buying votes by the wholesale as they have done in the past, and In all the manufacturing towns and cities the now law Is sure to operate to the advantage of the democrats, os the republican mill owners will bo powerless to Intimidate their employes, or to know how they voted. DOUGLASS GOT SCARED. The news from Hayti regarding the recent conduct of Hypolite, the black butcher who is the president of thellttlo republic, conveys the Idea that he la crazy. It appears that when the diplo matic corps called on Hypolite to pro test against the violation of the Mexican consulate as an asylum of refuge, that he shook his fist in the faces of the diplomats and caused Frederick Doug lass, our saddlo colored minister, to grow almost white with fright. Tho German consul, however, brought Uopo- llte to terms, when be protested against his conduet and stated that he would promptly report the Insult to the German emperor, and the result was the president of Hayti begged off and promised that It should never occur again. It occurs' to the avenge Caucasian that the civilized na tions of the world ongbt to take steps to rid Hayti of such a savage as Hypolite, and we hope that the opportunity will soon be offered a United States man-of- war to drop a few shells about hit ears. In tho meantime, however, this govern ment should do something to give Min ister Douglass a stiff upper lip, because it Ids courage la not bolstered up the chances are that Hypolite will glare at him some day and he will take to the woods and get lost. ^ Alexander Boyd of Cool Springs, Pa, shot and killed his motlier-in-law the other night, and when arrested lie stated that he mistook her for a burgltr*. It is true that there aro hundreds of men in this world who would rather haven burglar in the bouse than a mother-in-law, but this thing of mistak ing a motber-in-Iaw for a burglar and ahootlDg ber ought to be discouraged. It is getting to be entirely too common and convenient. Tiie Bristol Courier gives these sta- tistlcs: “Two-thirds of the churoh members of this country are women, and out of 45,000 convicts in the state prisons more than 43,000 are men.” And yot thoro aro men who rise up in the dignity of tho superiority of their set to make a habit of belittling wo men.
