Told In Detail.
Yesterday the board of education
of Americas held an important meeting
.electing teachers for the ensuing year
and transacting other matters of im
portant*.
It is proposed to make the course
which is taught at the schools more
complete than it Is at present—and
Americus already has the best school
system in Georgia. Looking to the end
named these matters were left to the
committee of the board on schools.
Whether or not Latin he begun in
the grammar schools, so that when pu
pils reach the high school they will be
prepared to read the easier classics.
The question of introducing in the
high school department the studies of
Greek or French was also left to that
committee.
Then too, this committee is to decide
whether or not the reading of music
shall be taught in all grades,
s It is more than probable that the com
mittee will decide affirmatively on all of
these questions, that is that all the pro
posed changes and additions be made,
which decision will have the effect of
greatly increasing the efficiency of the
schools.
All the extra rooms in the Jackson-
street school building were ordered fitted
up with new desks and other now furni
ture. It was directed and ordered that
furniture enough to supply at least four
rooms be bought and put in position at
once. That will givo a place for a large
number of pupils who could not be oc
commodated during the term just
ended.
It was also ordered that four addi
tional rooms be added to the McCoy-
hill school building.
Teachers license were granted those
ladies, who passed successful examina
tions: Miss Genevieve Adams, high
school teachers license. Misses Hattie
A. Clarke, Annie B. Ansley, Sallye Alex
ander and Kate Mize were granted gram
mar school teachers’ licenses.
Colored school teachors’ licenses were
granted to Ellen Maude Nell, Lula B.
Cook, Elizabeth Banton and Osceola
Thompson.
The board then elected a superintend,
ent and teachers os follows:
Superintendent—A. J. M. Bizlen.
Teachers, Jackson-streetsohool—J. E.
Mathis principal high school; George J.
Winkler teacher of ninth grade high
school; Miss Sallle Wheeler teacher of
eighth grade high school; Miss Lannie
Adams teacher of seventh grade gram
mar school.
The following were also elected, but
were not assigned grades. That will
soon bo done at a meeting of the board
of education. The teachers are:
Misses Annie Ansley, Lily Browne,
S. R. Cowles, Hattie A. Clarke, Stella
Dunn, Mrs. Emma L. Guthrie, Misses
Annie Gyles, Annie McLaughlin, Susie
Taylor and Mrs. D. T. Wilson.
An assistant teaoher for the Jackson
street school, to which position a regu
lar salary Is attaohed, will be elected at
the next meeting of the board.
* It will be seen that the number of
. teaohers has been Increased, as well as
the seating capaolty of the sehools.
Those of the teachers who were regu
larly employed last year whose grades
have not yet been assigned will be paid
at the rate of ISO per month. Misses
Ansley, Clarke, Dunn and McLaughlin
will be paid at the rate of HO per
month.
These teachers were elected for the
oolorad schools: C. A. Catledge, prin
cipal and teacher of the grammar grades,
Minnie Jenkins teacher of the fifth
grade, Willie Catledge and Osceola
Thompson teachers of the fourth grade,
Lucy Phillips and Lou Collier teachers
of the third grade, Lula B. Cook, Ellen
Mand Nell and Mattie Hughes teachers
seoond grade, Viola Hart, Elizabeth
Banton and Laura Jefferson.
The board could have done no better
than to have chosen the teachers whom
It re-elected. This Is especially true of
the superintendent. The election of the
other teachers can’t but meet the ap
proval of the people of Americus.

Limits of Americas Yesterday.
A monster rattlesnake was killed near j
the S. A. M. railroad trestle over Mucka- j
lee creek yesterday morning by Dave ,
Kendrick, a colored barber who works j
at Anderson A Lunsfords* shop.
Dava was quietly wolking along toward ■
the city when bis attention was attract- J
ed to something moving at his feet in j
the grass. On looking down be saw the
snake right at his feet Dave got a
move on him for once, until he got out
of reach, when he secured a rail and
mashed the monster's head.
The snake measured live feet, and had
fourteen rattles.
Ae was brought to town and attracted
quite a crowd whose curiosity was
aroused by a huge bulge about middle
way of the snake as if it had swallowed
something. This brought the dissecting
knife into service, and when the snake
was opened a rabbit, nearly grown was
exposed to view.
It then puzzled the assembled crowd
to know how the snake managed to
swallow so large an animal, but It was
enough to know that it had really swal
lowed the rabbit, and each one had his
opining as to how it was doue.
