Why summer jewelry should run to
hearts, is something beyond my ken, but
it is true that the sweetest, coolest,
cutest little gold and silver hearts are
shown at the jewlers’ for this season’s
wear. The summer girl has had the
good taste to adopt this pretty fleeting
fashion, and she wears the tiny silver
heart with her Initial or monogram on
one side, attached to a slender chain
which just clasps tjie circumference of
her dainty neck, and outlinos its classic
proportions. Some of the buds wear the
little heart strung on a narrow band of
velvet, but the chain to match is prettier.
Others fasten It on the bodice with a
classpin, or wear it on a bangle. The
largest of these hearts is as big ns a
silver dollar, and one side opens to show
a picture Inside. And hero inexorahl
Dame Fashion Insists that the portrait

girl graduates are very happy in the
possession of these new silver sweet*
hearts.

One of the most charmingly delight
ful entertainments which over had its
being in Amoricus—and the city is noted
for its elegant entertainments—was
debut party tendered Friday night of
of last week to Miss Jeanne Stapleton
by Mr. and Mrs. R. M. Stewart at their
handsome home on Church street.
The beautiful grounds wero made
prettier still by myriads of Japanese
lanterns, scattered horo and yon in
graceful clusters, heightening the effect
of the other illumina ions and decora
tions of the bouse. But the loveliest
picture of all was Miss Stapleton her
self, her Grecian beauty never appearing
to better advantage than it did In the ex
quisite costume of that evening.
Mrs. Stewart is a charming bostc-ss,
and she and Mis, Stapleton succeeded in
making the occasion one continual
round of merriment for those who had
the pleasure of attending.

“Such a relief, though what bo sees in
that girl to admire I can’t imagine
got hysterical right off and reminded
him of another young man who had
asked Ills father the same question he
had just asked me The old gentleman
thought over it awhile, then he said:
“ ‘Take the old rhyme, Jamie:
* ‘When this you see
Hemsinbrr me 1 ”
“So the young fellow, who wasn't
very bright, had the inscription put In
the ring, and Mils was the way it read:
“ ‘When this yor. see
Remember father.'
“I don’t think my story took con
vulslvely, but we both felt better, and I
advised him—as a sister—to let mottoes
alone, and use just dates and initials.
Mispah’—tho Lord watch between thee
and me— and ‘Mon Cor Plesor’—ray
beard's delight—have outlived their
usefulness. The girl of the past was
shy of tier love tokens, but it would be
just tike that Mamie Sweetbriar and the
girls of tier style to have the ring
weighed and nppiaised. And the mot
to, if it had one, would be common
property in a week.’’

What has happened to the good and
graceful art of conversation? It is now
among the lost arts and when people
meet they must play cards, dance, or
engage in some other diversion in lieu
thereof. With it have gone the art and
habit of correspondence, and, ns a re
sult, people who associate for months
in the closest social relation do not
know each other in the end. It is too
bad that the hurry and rush of the time
has so destroyed the possibility of real
social pleasure. As one white-haired
lady, whose experience covers more
than sixty years of social life, said the
other day: “It 1$ time for mo to die
when the men are too lazy to talk and the
women do not know how.”

One of the papers the otbar day con
tained a dispatch telling of the killing of
a woman by a man who hod married
her, knowing her to be dissolute, with
the Impression that he could reform her.
Of course he oontd not do so and, when
sho resumed her ovil practices, he was
driven to distraction. Wliat a weak
mind this man must have bad! First to
believe that it la possible to reform a
bad woman, or, for that matter, a bad
man by marriage; next to kill himself
