The grand afliance rally which come,
off next Tuesday is all the talk just
now.
A crowd of at least ten, If not twenty,
thousand is expected to congregate in
Americus that day as this is the rallying
point for all South Georgia. The peo
ple will literally pour Into town from
all points along the railroads leading
heie, while many will corao in buggies
and wagons from Sumtftr and the coun
ties which are.not accessible by rail.
Now that the proposed barbecue bas
been dispensed with on account of tho
time it would take up there is a chance
for Americus to simply outdo hersolf in
regard to hospitality and convince the
alliancemen that they are holding their
rally in the home of their friends. It is
a fact known of all that Americus will
be glad to have this large assemblage
of alliancemen and that she will extend
a most hearty wolcome to the farmers of
South Georgia and to the noted men
who are to addresstliem in Americus on
the day of tho grand rally.
It is generally understood that the far
mers will bring baskets along from home
and that there will be a great basket
dinner. Every citizen of Americus, es
pecially every merchant, should send a
well Ailed basket to help feed those who
will be here. Too much cannot bo done
for these people, for after all they are
the mainstay of Americus, and of every
other town in the country for that mat
ter. Americus should do her full share
toward entertaining her visitors on that
occasion and thcro is much that she can
do. There is but little room for those
who know Americus and Americus peo
ple to doubt that they will help in every
Way they can to mako the day a grand
success.
The council has sot the ball rolling,
and the people will keep it in motion.
A special committoo from the coun
cil, consisting of Aldermen Williams,
Logan and Wheatley has been appointed
to act in concert with the special com
mittee from the Sumter County Alliance
is making arrangements for the rally.
Tho joint committee has decided to
have the exercises of the day held In the
grove just south of the Southwestern
depot. The council committee has let
the contract for a spacious speakors’
stand, which will be substantially built
and neatly covered, and for seats enough
to seat several thousand people. Work
on tliesp will be commenced in ample
time for them to be ready by the day of
the rally. This committee will ajfo see
that plenty of ice and water is furnished
to cool off the people and quench their
thirst.
These things will be the gilt of the
city of Americus.
Now the people should be beginning
to get ready to do something on their
own account. It might be well to hold
a meeting at some place that may be
agreed upon to arrange upon some plan
for the people to punue In regard to
the matter. Other cities w%ere the
rallies are to be held have adopted this
plan, and Aihericus should extend the
alliancemen and their leaders as hearty
a welcome as they will receive any.
where. Whether the meeting is held or
not, however, that welcome can |je ex
tended and the people of Amerlous and
the merebanta can prepare baskets to
help swell the dinner that will be spread
that day.
Let everybody see what they can do
In this matter, and no one will lose any
thing by IL Let’s greet Americus’vis
itors with a hearty and sincere welcome
genuine Americus welcome.

Wo are therefore compelled to press

that some owe may cause them ttojfre-
gard the matter as insignificant, these
small accounts aggregate (several (thou

TOWARD THE DEEP SEA
THE SAVANNAH, AMERICUS A MONT
GOMERY WILL PUSH
It tb« Savannah Morning New, Is Not Mis
taken—Tho Work Expected to Bagla a.
Soon a. tho Western lExtenalon to Com
plete—Intonating Banding.
The Savannah Morning News of yes
terday had this to say of the Savannah,
Americus it Montgomery road:
Iron for the Chattahoochee river
bridge of (the Savannah, Americus «t
Montgomery railroad Is belpg shipped
through Savannah almost dally. Three
carloads went through last njght This
bridge will be finished within a few
weeks, and then the Savannah, Ameri
cus & Montgomery road will be a com
plete line to Montgomery, Ala., giving it
340 miles.
As soon as this work is dpne it is ex
pected that the contractors and men
will turn their attention this way and
begin building to Savannah, either inde
pendently or to meet another road.
About seventy-five miles will have to be
built to accomplish this, but there is no
doubt that the .Savannah, Americus it
Montgomery will come In. The road is
after an outlet to the sea, and Savannah
Is really the only practicable point to
build to.
It Is asserted on good authority that
the Middle Georgia & Atlantic will be
built to a connection with the Savannah,
Americus tfc Montgomery, and give It
terminal rights on Hutchinson's Island.
This may account for the present actlvl
ty of the promoters of the Middle Geor-
gla & Atlantic. Seventy-five miles of
this road must be built to hold Hutch
inson’s Island.
It may ne quite a while before a suffl.
clent sum of money can be ra^imd to
carry the projected road to completion,
and it would be a matter of. considerable
convenience and profit all around to
form a connecting arm to the Savannah,
Americus & Montgomery until such
time as other arrangements can be
made.
The Savannah, Americus Jc Montgom
ery runs through one of the finest agri
cultural and naval stores regions In the
south. With Its lino completed Into
Montgomery and an opening to the sea
by way of Savannah, a great quantity of
cotton will be brought here for shipment
north. The benefits that would accrue
to Savannah by the combination spoken
of would be of great importance. The
road is now doing an Immense carrying
ti-ade in naval stores, having In factmore
bnslness in this particular line than it
can handle.
The Savannah, Americus & Montgom
ery is a paying Institution that bas come
to stay. It has the best of financial
baoklng, both at borne and abroad, and
It Is the intention of the corporation to
have its own line of steamers to the
north as soon as it can arrange Independ
ent connections with the sea.

heat, not one in a hundred;
they break from accidents.
They are made of clear
glass as well as tough, as
clear as crystal. They fit
die lamps they are, made
for. Snape controls the
draft. They are shaped
right. Draft contributes to
proper combustion; • that
makes light. They improve
the light of a lamp.
But they cost a dealer
three times as much as
common chimneys, and, as
they do not break, he is apt
to be anxious lest they stop
his trade. Diminished sales
and less profit are not
agreeable to him.
There are two sides to
the question. Talk with him.
