m •' THE AMERICUS DAILY TIMES-RECORDER: FRIDAY, JULY *10, 1891. THE TIMES-RECORDER. Dally and Woelcly. Thb Ahbuovi UecobjIeb Established 1879. The Aheuicus Times Established 1890. Consolidated, Aphil, 1891. SUBSCRIPTION; DAilt, One Yeab, Daily, One Month, 1 #EEKLT, ONE YEAB, - - . . l.C Weekly, Six Months, ...... t For AdrertlslDg rstes address Bascom Mybick, Editor and Manager, THE TIMES PUBLISHING COMPANY, Americas, Go. Amcncus, Qa., July 10, 1801. Evkuy business bouse in Araericus should be represented in the columns of The Times-Recoiidkb. Americus will extend a cordial we) corae.to the farmers who will assemble in this city next Tuesday. The Chicago Inter-Ocean is greatly disgusted because the Southern Alii* anccmcn hare shown no disposition to join the Western third party cranks. The negro George Washington who was hung in Atlanta last Friday, inti mated to his spiritual adviser that Ik had killed four others besides the vic tim for which lie was hung. Hov, Tom Watson should bo caroful to know that he is speaking the truth before opening his mouth. His speech at Kite shows that lie shoots off his mouth regardless of the facts in the The crookedness in the Ozburn busi ness seems to continue in Atlanta. Some body has stolen the bill of indictment in order as it is supposed to prevent his being hung when his thirty days’ ropriove expires. The legislative work of allowing Sim eon Jones to peddle without a license, changing section 45,870 of the code of Georgia, and allowing billy goats to roam at large in the 85,887tli district, G, U., has now got fully under headway | In Atlanta. . . A TIN PLATE STORY. The tin plate liar Is getting in his work quite frequently on both sides of the question these latter days, and it wop’t do to place Implicit conildence in all the tin plate stories we may chance to hear, no matter whether they bo told by republicans or democrats. But the story that is going the rounds About Mr. Niedringbaus just now bears certain internal evidences that strength en our ciedullty. Mr. Niedringbaus is a big dealer In tin plate, and be was also a member of the last congress. Mr. Xiedringhaiis is not a statesman and doesn't profess to be. He is not an ambitious patriot with the great good of the country at heart, but simply a slick citizen who looks out mostly for Nied- ringhaus. His desire to go to congress caine not of an ambition to be great or to serve his country, but mostly of the commercial Instinct which led him to see tliero a chance for a great profit in his business. He went before the ways and means committee and advocated strongly the increased duty on tin plate. He spoke by authority as one familiar with the trade, and asserted positively that tin plate could be made in this country, and that such a valuable homo industry should be encouraged. The duty was placed as high as he wanted it, and went into effect July 1, 1801. During the interim between the enactment and the enforcement, Mr. Niedringbaus was busy filling his large establishment with tin plate imported from Wales. It is intimated that Mr. Niedringbaus is practicing another fraud, and having articles manufactured from the Welsh Importations stamped American tin.” He will make a very pretty sum by the transaction, and it will all be wrung out of the pockets of those Americans who buy tiri. Mr. Niedringbaus and his methods make a fair exposition of the workings of the McKinley bill. MORE KICKING. The Macon Gas Light and Water Com. pany Is kicking about the coal rates, and claims that It is the victim of discrim- mlnatlon. * “I don't know why the railroads should want to pinch us," said Presi dent Boardman yesterday, .“but they are doing it Here is a letter that we have just received Informing us that all the railroads south of Marietta and Hast Tennessee have entered Into an agree ment to charge domestic rates on coal delivered to water works, gas works and street railway companies.” The steam coal rate has been raised from $1.85 to $1.85 per ton, but we are com pelled to pay the domestic rate of $2.25 per ton. Why should wo have to pay 30 cents more on the ton than other manufacturers? It looks like personal discrimination. “This matter of coal rates will come up before the railroad commission next Monday. If the railroads are sustained and we are compelled to pay the ad vanced freight rate on coal It means higher gas and electric lights in Macon. We shall simply have to charge $175 per 1,000 cubic feet for gas, instead of $1.50 as at present, beginning next month."—Telegraph. TOe four men electrocuted at Sing Sing, New York on Tuesday, aro re ported to have died an easy death, but this style of shuffling off will never suit the general run of criminals in this sec tion of the union. The glory is all gone when the gallows speech Is out off of the programme. The French government has bought one of the pictures exhibited at the Champ do Mars Salon by Mlsa Lee Bob bins, the only American thus honored this year. Bat wouldn’t the fair Bob bins weave her way into Immortality if abe should devote her talents to tapes try instead of painting? Sax. John Sibley of Cobb has Intro- drama'a bill to regulate horse-racing, and to prevent horses being entered un der bogus names at fairs, with inteat to deceive the unwary who would thus be taken by dark horses. Mr. Sibley Is •evidently opposed to dark horses, espe- •cisflly If their names are kept dark. The Chattanooga Evening News of last Sunday was a paper of which that city may well be proud. The News cel ebrated its tblid anniversary with twenty-eight page edition printed on calander paper, full of nows, and giving a general description of every impor- t industry in the fity, with Illustra tions. It also contained pictures and sketches of the leading business men of Chattanooga, and best of all, showed a liberal advertising patronage. The News is appreciated at home as well os abroad. Editor Shaver and his able staff deserve all the compliments that their contemporaries will shower upon them for their great work in building up such a paper in so short a time, and in doing so great a work for their city'k progress and prosperity. Newspapers build cities these days, as witness tho work done In Americus by the Recorder and the Times tho last three years. The Macon Evening News has re duced to its original size of four pages and Bjx columns to the page. The man ager claims that the embarrassiqpnt is only temporary and due to the poor judgement of tho proprietor who lately purchased a controlling Interest in the stock. All the hands in the job office have been discharged and a number of other employees a^ taking holiday. Tho News lately purchased a splendid new press'from the Goss Company, of Chicago, and this, together with the ad ditional exponso of enlargement from four pages to eight at the dull time of the year, is probably the cause of the trouble. These ace the hardest times on newspapers seen this generation; and tho best of them have been compelled to reduco expenses to meet the hardness of the times and the stringency of money. There are not probably three dailies in Georgia to-day making their current expenses. iFasxeel’s last hope of political ro- 'covary.ls gone, as Us parliamentary can didate dn hit stronghold has suffered an overWkdtasing defeat. The reports of the accidents on the Fourth of July aro not all in yet, but enough of them have been received to •how that: there were more persons killed throughout the country on that day than fell at the battle of Bunker HM. It has been conceded by the press to'be the most glorious Fourth of July . that has occurred in the history of the country. Hexby Wattebsox to the students of t he University of Virginia; “Our coun- t ry is not getting worse;,it is getting b otter, and we are masters of the great- » st country on the globe. We have the a tost perfect system of government. 1 Ve have nothing from without to fear, - i ind within we have but two great dan gers—the taste for money and the devil at party spirit” Congressman Tom Watson has sold fats law library and announced that he has retired permanently from the prac tice of law. The politicians hare it that Watson Is grooming for governor, and that he will inevitably be In the next nee. Now if littlo Tommie would do as much for Georgia as he has done for the bar, he would be held In lasting cs- teem by his grateful fellow citizens. That the Czan of Russia Isn’t as bad as painted, and that just a little of bis authority exercised In the coiA freight business In Geoigla would be a source I ol general rejoicing to the people, may he neon from the following: ’hie Rus sian government has ordered a great re duction to bo made in the freight charges on grain being shipped to the ipravinces where a famine is t!i real-I ened. Opinions differ very radically aa to the success of the second test of elec trical execution In New York. While some believe It to be a great improve ment In all respects upon the barbarous style now in vogue of breaking the pris oner’s neck with a rope. The New York Sun is very outspoken against it: “By the persistent effort* of a few hair- bralned reformers, we have beep Indnoed in this state to substitute a dark and awful method of Inflicting the death pen alty for the simple and old -fashioned ex ecution by banging. No torture of the yniddle ages was ever more Ingeniously contrived to cause mental agony than the requirement of our statute that the culprit shall bo Informed of the week in wbleh he Is to die, but not of the day or hour until he Is led forth for execution.” Senator Quay Is very Indignant at the address of the. Philadelphia Repub lican, demanding that he be retired from the leadership of the party, and denouncing his administration as utter ly corrupt. Quay denies the charges without attempting to show that they are false, and declares that the men who got up the address voted for Pattison and some of them for Cleveland, and that they are Democrats and mugwumps and not Republicans. Tho fact remains, however, that they are the same clasa of men who helped to elect Pattison last year, and they have shown themselves sufficiently powerful to swing the state the way they want it to go, and it would bo well for Quay to bear this fact In mind.
