ACROSS THE WAY.
Selling Strawberrie* ut » Profit.
"There aro tricks in all trades but
ours,” said a retail grocer to me recently.
"You wonder how it is that we are able
to Bell strawlierries at less than they cost
us and still make money. It is a puzzler
to the uninitiated, isn’t it? But after all
It is simple enough when you know how.
"For instance, I go down to the mar
ket and buy a crate of strawberries for
thirty cents a box. Mow my trade is
not rich enough to pay me even thirty-
five cents a box, and at less than that I
make no profit.
“Well, I take those berries und empty
them out of the boxes. Then I take a
nice piece of white paper, which is much
cheaper than strawberries, and drape,
as it were, the box. Then I take the
berries and arrange them very carefully
in such a way that all that are any way
touched with decay go to the bottom and
only the fine, ripe, sound ones are in
sight By leaving plenty of space
between the berries, except the top layer.
I have no difficulty in filling two of the
draped boxes with the contents of one
of the original, and then they look much
richer and more appetizing nnd sell
better.
“When this is done, out they go in
front of the store marked twenty cents
a box, and before I know it they ure idl
sold, netting me a nico little profit. If I
had tried to sell them in the original
boxes at tliirty-fivo cents I would have
had a good many left on my hands tc
spoil.
“Why, some of the bigger dealers in
green groceries and fruits keep a man, ut
a good salary, simply to repack goods,
and it pays welL”—New York Herald.
Too tV.Il Hidden.
Elizabeth Glover, in her book, “Fam
ily Manners,” devotes a chapter to de
ploring the New England habit of re
pressing one’s feelings on tho matters
nearest at heart, and never allowing
them to find expression in words.* She
says: ,
There was a railroad accident, and a
poor former’s wife was taken oct, bleed'
ing '
-Haro you no friend* across the way?”
My little city darling said;
"And when there come* a rainy day,
Can't you look out. and nod your head
To some one etoa, aa 1 can do
To Will and Fred and baby Sue?
1 beard you tell mamma today
You bad no friend* across the way. ”
“But I bare friends-dear friend*.” I cried.
With quick, remorseful thought of home.
“A band of brothers, side by side.
To erect me if l goorcome.
Bow dear they are, l cannot say I
For bow It cheers me day by day
To see across the vslley far.
Bow strung and beautiful they are!
"And you should see tbe robes they wear;
Their mantles thick and soft of green.
Then rainbow tinted, yet more fair.
Or ermine wrap* with silver sheen.
But yet I think 2 lore them best
When, all in somber shadows drtmk
Their broken ranks in sBeoce lie
Beneath tbe solemn midnight sky.
“Sometime* a misty curtain drawn
Between us bides these friendj from met
But when at sunset it is gone.
Dear child, bow fair the sight I seel
For where the nearer ranks diride.
The gates of glory open wide;
And lo! in that unearthly light
The farther hills transfigured quite;
While yet another and another
Peeps o’er the shoulder of his brother.
And smiles through rosy mist and seems to say,
•Heaven He* beyond us-such a little way.* *
“Sneh friends are nice,” she softly sold,
“For any one as old as you;
And when I’m old and you aro dead.
Perhaps I'll go and see them too.
But now I’d rather watch to see
Children across the street from me;
And nod to Will, and play peep-bo
With cunning iittie baby Sue.**

Two Doctors.
Almost every one has mode his jest
about tho proneness of doctors to dis
agree, the one prescribing exactly an
opposite course from that ordered by an
other; bat not every one has had an op

os was mads by the late Baron Lntz,
formerly prime minister of Bavaria.
The baron was once severely wounded
in battle in both legs. The wound in
one leg was much like that in the othor.
It struck him that here was a chance to
study the ways of the surgical profession
and beguile the long hoars of his con
valescence. He accordingly called in
one doctor and gave him charge of his
right leg, bat told him nothing aboat
the wound in the other, and then called
in another surgeon for his left leg, keep
ing him similarly in ignorance about the
wounded right leg.
The doctors adopted a very different
method of treatmeut, but both wounds
healed at about tho samo time. When
the baron’s legs were quite well he de
rived a great deal of amusement from
getting the doctors together and mysti
fying them with questions about the

Curiou* Old Indian Signs.
About five miles above Morven is a
mystery which the people of that com
munity couno't explain. In a hummock
near the river are two complete circles,
one 90 and the other 140 feet in diameter,
the smaller circle inside tho larger.
The circles, which are mneb like those
left by a circus performance, are com
pletely barren of vegetation of all kinds.
These circles have been there since the
recollection of the oldest citizen, and
none know how or when they came
there. It must be that .they are Indian
signs, relics of by gone days, when the
savage warrior was lcfrd of all he sur
veyed.—Macon (Ga.) Telegraph.
