Hon. W. M. Hawkea was stung by a
poisonous spider yesterday afternoon
and seriously hurt. His body was badly
swollen last night from the effects of
the bite. The wound is not considered
dangerous.
An important meeting of the directors
of the Americus Manufacturing and Im
provement Company was held yesterday.
Their action is not yet to be made pub
lic, but It was ono which means much
for Americus.
Bailiff G. S. Cobh of Justice Oliver’s
court has resigned to accept a position
on the Savannah, Americus & Mont
gomery road. Mr. D. A. Pettis has been
appointed bailiff in his stead. The
change took place yesterday.
To-day Dr. J. J. Worsham will attend
a family reunion at his father's home in
Knoxville, Ga. The entire family will
be together for the first time in a num
ber of years and the fatted calf will bo
killed in honor of the event, or words to
that effect.
No one was killed at the Chattahoo
chee bridge of the S., A. A M Wednes
day, as was reported. Tho work of con
structing a brldgo like that Is dangerous,
but so good has been tho management of
things that no one has been hurt there
in aay way.
Arrangements are being perfected far
a concert for the benefit of the Baptist
church organ, which is to bo given at an
early day. Those who have it in charge
say that this concert will be one of the
most cnjoyablo musical foasts to which
tho people of Americus were ever In
vited.
Mr. Tom J. Slappey, who has been for
a long time connected with the Bee
Hive, lias severed ids connection with
that firm. lie is at present among
friends and relatives in the country en
joying a two weeks' holiday. lie lias
accepted a position with Beall A Oakley,
and will begin work tiioro August 1.
Yesterday was a very hot and oppress
ive day. Old Sol made himself felt in all
his force as if to make amends for tho i
recent cool spell. Tho maximum tem
perature was 90 degrees and the mini
mum 70. The day was cloudy and the
atmosphere was closo. The heavy clouds ,
threatened a thunderstorm in the after
noon but no rain fell.
Yesterday Mr. J. C. Nicholson received
a telegram announcing that his father,
Mr. J. P. Nicholson, who lives in Free
stone county, Texas, was worse and not
expected to live. Mr. Nicholson left
for Texas yesterday in * response to tho
telegram. Ills father is an old man, and
there aro many in Americus who hope
his life may he spared many years yet.
