6 THE AMERICAS DAILY TIMES-RECORDER: i 'V t lb, WILL FIGHT IT. VISITING AND BKINC VISITED. RAILROADS UP IN ARMS OVER THE TWO CENT A MILE RATE. The Proposed Reduction in Passenger Rate* by the Legislature to be Met De terminedly—Passenger Business Won't Warrant Lowering. The talked of Introduction in the legislature of a bill to reduce the rail road passenger rates of Georgia to l cents per mile is annoying the roads to no inconsiderable extent. Should the bill bo introduced there is no doubt that the railroads will make one of the great est lights ever known in the history of Georgia. The roads claim that their rates now are as low as possibly can be made with any show of pro ITt. “If such a measure should be passed,” said a prominent oflicial, yesterday, “it would result in the bankrupting nearly every road in the state. The almost universal rate throughout the United Slates is cents a mile. There are a few roads which charge but 2 cents a mile, but those run through thickly populated territory, and do such an im mense passenger business that they can afford it. “The 2-cent rate won’t do in this sec tion,” the oflicial added. “The country hasn’t the population to warrant it, and it will be a longtime before it will, either. If our lawmakers would hesi tate for a while and give the matter care ful thought and calculation they would see that the reductions the roads now make to excursions, conventions, theat rical companies, clergymen and such like brought the general average down to hut little more than 2 cents per mile. If a law should bo passed reducing the regu lar rate to 2 cents of course the people would expect the roads to continue the reductions I have mentioned, and as a matter of course they could not he run with any possibility of making money.” “lias not the railroad commission the power to reduce tlio rate to 2 cents without action by the legislature?” “Yes, most certainly; hut the commis sion would rather let the legislature take tlio responsibility for such a sweeping change.” Tlio oflicial said the talkcd-of reduc tion is not being agitated by the com mission, but by outside parties, who think the railroads are making too much money out of the passenger, when, as a matter of fact, they make hut little.
