Sumter Ikw act an example which It
will bo well for the other counties of the
state to follow. Sumter always leads.
She has organized a teachers Institute
and pays the teachers for every day they
atteud it An important step toward
securing better and more effective teach
ings in the county schools was taken at
the initial session of the Sumter County
Teachers Irfstitute, which was held at
the Jacksou-street school house yester
day morning at 10 o’clock.
In the absence of County School Com
missioner Moore, Supt. Bizien of the
city schools called the meeting to order.
It took the teachers but a short while to
sottle down to work. About twenty-five
teachers and many visitors were present.
All were Interested in tho work.
The first exercise was the reading of a
paper by Miss Lannio Adamas on tlie
subject of teaching spelling. The paper
was well prepared and was on the right
line, judging from tho discussion that
followed in which several of the teachers
took part.
The next question was “the right
manner of teaching reading to young
classes." Prof. L. H. Carter, by appoint
ment, bandied the subject right skill
fully, advocating strongly the word
method combined with the alphabetic.
Although Mr. Carter bad but little to
say of the sentence method, it appeard
that the better way was a happy combi
nation of all the methods, taking what is
best In all.
“How to teach geography in the first,
second and third year of that study,"
was the burden of an elaborate paper by
Mrs. Emma L. Guthrie. The paper was
such as to cause the teachers that heard
it to follow tho correct plan—suggested
by her.
Prof. J. P. Nelson, who is the princi
pal of the school at Andersonville, was
invited by the chairman to give the class
bis views as to thejbest manner of econo
mizing time in the organization and
teaching of ungraded schools, stated
that he had not collected any thoughts
on that subject, but was, however, will
ing to do his best under tho circum
stances, Then Prof. Bizien, for half an
hour or so, by asking question after
question, succeeded in getting from Mr,
Nelson a vast deal of Information whioh,
if heeded by teachers, will do them a
great belp in the future.
After a short recess the work was re
sumed and those present enlisted os
members of the institution. The follow
ing teacbors were present.
Misses Lannie Adams, Annie Ansley,
Lizzie Lasseter, Anna Perry, Minnie
Phillips, Carrie Shropshire, Norma
Stewart, Ida Stallings, Susie Taylor,
Mesdames S. E. Mask, D. T. Wilson, E.L.
Guthrie. Prof. L. H. Carter,JMr. Warren
Culpepper,Prof. W. B. Merritt,Messrs. S.
S. McMahon, R. E. Mann, J. P. Nelson,
George Winkler, J. L. Wilkinson, C. C,
Shepherd, Prof. A. J. M. Bizien.
Prof. George J. Winkler’s task io-wlt:
“How to Teach Notation and Enumera
tion,” received due attention and the
discussion having drifted toward tho
merits or demerits ofthe decimal system
quite a skirmish took place among the
educators.
The last subject was “How to Teach
English.” Prof. W. B. Merritt spoke at
length on that subject, every one of his
remarks being practical and well point
ed, and If all teachers who were presont
will follow tho instructions received
from him there is no doubt that all tho
schools of Sumter county will bo beno-
fitted.
All in all the first meeting of the in
stitute was a grand success. The pros-
senco of so many tachers at this first
meeting promises a largo attendance at
tho next meeting, which is to take place
in the same school house on August 13,
II and 15. All teachers should bo pres
ent at those meetings, which cannot but
be beneficial to them. This is especial
ly true since the county board has agreed
to pay them for the time they aro at
tending tho institute. The patrons of
those schools which aro now in session
should bo willing for tho teachers to at
tend tho school.
