But chiefly there came the old f;
ioned rustic, in his best silk robes, v.
square shaven crown and short queue
caught up and tied—perhaps wearing
the hakutna, or divided skirt, of the old
samurai. A gentleman in every act. In*
lx)\vs as he enterstothooflici.il at the
door, carefully writes his ballot and
affixes his seal, then with great delibera
tion folds it and places it in the oblong
officii;! envelope. For some of tho voters
it is necessary to seek the as. istance of a
special clerk in writing their ballots. It
is not that they cannot write; for every-
liody knows tho plebeian kana or sylla
bic writing. They prefer to %ee their
ballots inscribed witli the more elegant
Chinese characters; and then, too, the
kana is sometimes ambiguous (for some
words have a dozen different meanings),
and there is a natural pnrtnrbation and
a desire to have their meaning # clearly
and correctly conveyed. When the
writing is finished tho long sleeved voter
walks over to tho tnchiainin, or inspec
tors. Here further effusions of polite
ness tako place, while tho voter gives
his name, number and address, and is
checked off on tho register. Then, with
another gesture of courtesy, ho turns to
tho ballot box, and with a bow, perhaps
in duplicate, to tho kind old mayor, who
sits Isdiind the box, he carefully, deposits
his ballot and quietly retires by another
door.—J. II. Wiguiore in Scribner’s.
Used to llelng Married That Way.
A wedding ceremony occurred some
years ago of a then United States sena
tor, who, a widower twice over, had for
thS third time succumbed to Cupid’s
wiles. At his first and second marriage
the ceremony had been performed by an
Episcopal clergyman, and hence the sen
ator was quite familiar with tho Episco
pal marriage form.
But the beautiful woman who had
captured his affections the thy*d tin*
was a devout Presbyterian, and naturally
wished tho connubial knot to be tied by
a minister of her own church, and ac
cording to its simplo sendee. To this
tho statesman lover made no objection.
The character of the servico was of
small account to him so long as it served
to unite him'to tho object of hifj adora
tion, and tho thought that ho might
blunder in the course of it never dis
turbed for a moment tho serenity of his
mind.
But, standing besido his bride to be,
stage fright, as it might bo called, seized
him. In tho excitement ho began to
marry himself, as it wero, by tho Episco
pal service, repeating glibly; "I, ,
tako thee, , to bo my wedded wife/'
and ho would probably have gone on to
the end if tho astonished Presbyterian
minister, who immediately appreciated
the situation, had not interposed, and,
interrupting the bridegroom, performed
tho ceremony with tho brevity of tho
Presbyterian form.
At tho point where tho perturbed
groom seemed bent on doing tho business
for himself a distinguished brother sen
ator present drew near to a lady, an
other guest, a close friend of his own
and of the bridnl pair, and whispered in
a pitying tone:
“Poor . He’s used to being mar
ried by tho other service.”—Washington
Post.
Fallacy of FUU a ml Brain.
One popular fallacy in connection with
fish may l>e noticed, namely, tho oft re
pented assertion that the eating of that
particular food increases brain power.
No one who has studied the subject can
possibly believe the afertion. A man
might eat a huge portion of fish every
day of his life, and on the day of his
death, if tho quantity of phosphorus (tho
brain invigorator) consumed wero to l»o-
come visible, it would not amount to
more than might probably suffice to tip
a couple of lucifer matches.
Communities have existed that lived
almost solely on fish, but theso ichthy-
ophagists wero certainly not famous for
intellectual attainments. Nor are our
finher villages, in many of which much
fish is presumably consumed, the seats
of any great amount of brain power.
None of our fisher folks are remarkable
for genius, or even what is called com
mon sense, their views of life and its re
sponsibilities being shrouded in a haze of
superstition, which they lack sufficient
strength of mind to see through.
No fishing community, so far ns is
known to tho writer, has given to the
world a great man. Men of mark-
poets, preachers, lawyers, philosophers,
warriors and physiciaus — have ema
nated, in Scotland at any rate, from all
classes except tho fishing class.—Temple
Bar.
