Like Xe d Brace in the “Georgia Scenes,” he set the whole con gregation to laughing. Tiiat is an interesting statement from the Census Bureau, which gives the amount of gold dug out of the ground In the United States during the past twelve months—$33,000,000 worth of gold and $00,000,000 worth of silver. Gov. Nor-then is quoted as saying that thoro is moro corruption and rotten ness In the politicts of Goorgia than at any period of her history. The govern or’s opponents must be making It pretty warm for him, to bring out such an expression as the above. As Alliance judge out in Kansas sent a man to jail for contempt who was act ing under the direction of tho supremo court. The supreme court ordored the prisoner discharged but the man was no sooner released than the Alliance judge had him re-arrested. The fresh judgo will be arrested and carried before the aupremo court for contempt. A him. has passod the state senate to place tho names of grand jurors in tho traverse jury box, so that tho latter may be drawn from tho wholo number of ju rors of the county. Tho bill also pro vides that should a grand juror bo ! taxed to pay bounties to manufacturers, drawn for both juries, another name I What tho farmers need is what the ahall ho drawn to tako his placo on the Democratic party proposes. Let all traverso jury. Tho object of the bill is this class legislation be wiped out. lowest grades of vacuum pan molassos contain from 20 to 25 per cent, of sugar, which cannot bo extracted by any pro cess thus far invented. Such molasses is estimated to be worth only from 1-11 to 1-5 cent a pound. I’ittsburg coal at the sugar house costs 1-5 cent per pound Such data form tho basis for the Plant er’s calculations. Tho uso of bagasse itself is an Important economy. In mills like that at St. Cloud it is dried by waste heat from the furnaces. Perhaps the Planter’s idea will not prove practicable In extensive use, but it ought at any rate to bo thoroughly tested. WHAT OPPRESSES THE FARMERS. Calculating on Commissioner ltaum’s assertion that he is “going to dump 350,000 original cases upon tho various pension agencies of tho country bofore the year is out," the New York Herald llguros it that “a neat little income of $25,000 per day will be divided out among tho wolves that prey on the old soldiers.” This calculation is made on the basis of $10 por case which the statutes allow pension attorneys on “original cases,” j»nd allowing 140 more working days for the remainder of the year. It is mathe matically correct. It is that sort of thing that is creating so much unrest among tho farmers of the country. They aro literally taxed to death to support other classes. The farmors aro the sub-strata, the ground work of ail industries and call ings, and consequently they pay tho greater part of tho taxes. They are taxed enormously for pensions, and to Improve tho traverso juries. The professors of the New York Chau tauqua complain that they cannot suc cessfully teach the students who flock to that Intellectual center whilo there is so much flirting and courting going on between the sexos. Tho boys and girls, young and old, pay moro attention to rowing, lawn tennis and other amuso- monts than they do to their studies, and the learned profossors are very much discouraged. Govehnoii Buchan ax, of Tenncsseo, is about to Involve the whole state in war, In trying to protect convict miners at tho coal mines in Brtceville. A body of troops and the convicts were captured by the miners and shipped off to Knox ville, and now the governor has ordered all of the state malitla to the front and Intends to enforce order. The striking miners and s ympathizlng citizens num ber about ’,000. There must bo an end to pension grabs aud bounties to favored classes, aud then the farmer will not feel that tho times press on him so hardly. Sexatoo Quay lias addressed a note to tho Associated Press to the effect that it Is probable, but not certain, that he will resign the chairmanship of the Re publican Xatlonal Committee on July 20, This shows that Quay wishes the country to understand that h&has a grip on the Republican party that It cannot shake off, and that be cannot bo forced off tho Xatlonal Committee by the sentiment which exists against him in his own party. If he resigns he wishes it to be understood that It will bo of his own accord. lie expressed the opinion, however, that if he stepped down and out, Clarkson will bo the man to take his place, so that the management of th! committee will merely pass out of the hands of one boodler Into those of an other. ly despised than by this Germau savant 400 suits 1’lack Emb. The expedition, while a daring, and iu some respects successful undertaking, was productive of cruelties which a really great commander ought to have been able to have kept down. But the English made a great lion of Stanley on his return from Africa, and Ills marriage with Miss Dorothy Ten nant was celebrated in Westminister Abbey with much eclat. It has been a short and doubtless unhappy union, and we repeat, the result is no occasion for surprise. The clergy of the city of St. Paul are trying to prevent the “world’s cham pionship fight" from being fought there to-day. They appealed to the mayor of the city, but he gave them notice that he had no power to act In the case; they appealed to the governor of tho state, but he assured themthat there is no law under which the fight can be prevented. The Episcopalian Bishop appealed to the athletic club to relieve itself from responsibility in tho promises, but that organization was deaf to his appeal. As a last resort the clergy of St. Paul de termined to preach on tho subject, and yesterday they delivered anti-pugilistic sermons, tho Influence of which has not yet been reported. It is a hard battle that the clergy of St. Paul have waged; and yet, for all that, to.day's light is very sure to be fought. Bishop Tai,bot writes that ho has his election to tho Bishopric of Georgia un der consideration, but thoro is no intima tion that he will accept. The commit tee appointed to notify him of his elec tion will go to Wyoming ns soon as a mooting with the bishop can be arranged. ( It appears that Senator Sherman has received Informatlua to the effect that Foraker la quietly knifing him In Ohio by fixing county conventions and ar ranging for the nomination of hta hench men as candidates for the legislature, and the rceult is tho Senator has re turned to the state to look after his fences. If the report is true that For aker ie working against Sherman the chances are there will be quite a row In the republican party, but It will end in the downfall of Sherman, as Foraker, despite the fset that he is a howling demagoguo with no ability except to throw dirt, is the Idol of the Republi cans and they will obey his commands to the letter. Govkhnoh Campbell's speech of ac ceptance last Wednesday was an able and exhaustive review of hie administra tion aud an excellent exposition of Dem ocratic principles. Governor Campbell complimented Major McKinley upon his high character and conspicuous ability, but said that they only rendered him more responsible for his advocacy of such measures as the force hill and tho McKinley tariff bill. Governor Camp bell also paid hit respects to “Calico Charlie” for his tricks In book-keeping, by which ho endeavors to show that there is plenty of money in the treasury, while at the vary same time ho Is bor rowing money to pay off the fifty mil lion four and a half per cent bonds. Gov. Campbell says the silver ques tion will not enter largely Into the Ohio campaign. The people will want to hear something of the silver queetlon. but after the canvass la two weeks old you will bear almost nothing outside of the tariff. If some great silver man had been nominated on the Republican ticket then the silver question wonld be dis cussed, bnt Msj.
