If yon want to know what we mean by a. SWEEPING Redac tion, come to this 30'Day .Clean Webster Wimberly was the victim of a terrible accident early yesterday morn ing. That be was not killed outright and bis body ground Into a shapeless mass. Is a mystery. It was the same old story “asleep on the track,” and that the terrible results of the accident were not even more ap palling Is well-nigh Inexplicable. Wim berly Is 23 years old, and has been em ployed alternately by the S., A. * M. and the Central railroads In the yards In this city. It Is not known which road ho was working for yesterday, but the accident which came so near costing him his life occurred on the Central road, opposlto the guano factory. Wlmborly was walking along the tracks between threo and four o'clock yesterday morning, when becoming tired he sat down upon the end of a cross-tie to rest. The rest thus secured will last him a long time, if it does not result in a per manent “tie-up.” As he sat there in the early hours of the morniDg his eyes grew heavy, and ere he knew it his head fell forward be tween his knees and lie Blept. How long he slept he does not know, but he dis tinctly recollects his sudden awakening. This took place in a ditch about twonty feet from tlie railroad track, and came upon him all in a heap. While Wimberly slept a fast freight came thundering down the road, and, notwithstanding the signals which are always whistled at this particular spot, he know nothing until the entire train had gone by and was fast disappertng in the distanco. From the nature of the terrible wounds indicted the supposition Is that the man was struck by tlie'steps of the caboose on the rear of the train. The ugliest of his wounds is a frightful out, nearly foot in length and several Inches deep, which extended along the back, beneath the left shoulder. Besidos this his left arm was frightfully mangled, the splin tered bono being driven through tlie skin, presenting a ghastly spectaelo. Uangled nigh unto death as he. was, Wimberly managed to drag himself to his home, whore medical attention was promptly rondored. Dr. G. T. Miller responded to the call and the wounded man was soon made as comfortable as the nature of his wounds would admit. His injuries were terrible indeed, but Dr. Miller believes that, with careful attention Wimberly will pull through all right. There is no doubt but that tho acci dent was the result' of tlie man's own carelessness, and, tlierofore, the road Is In no wise to blame thorefor. Engines entering or leaving the city always give the required whistlo signals at the road crossings there, and Wlmborly was cer tainly a heavy sleeper not to havo heard those blasts. * At any rate, should he recover he will doubtless select a softer and safer bed than a cross-tie in future when he feela like snoozing. As I am going to mar ket on August 1st and will need money, and in order to get as much as possible by that time, have concluded to reduce my stock.
