THE AMERICUS DAILY TIMES-RECOh PER: WEDNESDAY, JULY 20, 1891. CLIFF CLAY'S CItOl*. f Montgomery M. Folsom Tells What He Saw at Clay's Plantation. Mr. M. M. Folsom, who spent several days in Amoricus last week, took a turn out to Col. C. C. Clay's plantation, and gave the Atlanta Journal an interesting account of the day, from which we ex tract the following: Imagine, if you can, a regular little village of whitewashed cottages, facing a big barn and mule lot, and oil at a little ditance a low-eaved, brown-liued man sion, with sweeping piazzas and a breezy hall; and big spreading oak trees in front; and— You have the plantation home of this prince of planters. It was still a long time till dinner, so we passed the house and went bowling away along the winding road that leads through tlie Helds. Far as the eye could read: to the Tight, to the left, front and rear, lay j spread out the green fields bedewed with one of the most magnificent crops that it has ever been my fortune to be hold. Think of 200 acres in one body that will yield over 200 bales of cotton! It is land that lias been cleared the third year, and the roots are still in the soil, but rich, dark, green cotton stands with boughs interlacing across four and a half foot rows, are a mass of bolls from top to bottom. Three years ago Mr. Clay came Into possession of these lands. It was the Furlow place then, and while the lands were of a magnificent character, the place was badly run down and produced poor crops, the very best being no more than a bale to three acres. But Mr. Clay is a brainy farmer, went to work with a will, and the result is the finest crops, to the size of it, per haps in the stai e of Georgia. He has 1,000 acres in cotton, from which he will get 000 bales. Two hun dred acres of that, according to the opin ions of expert cotton men, will go over 200 bales. This cotton is already made, in a groat measure, as three is grown fruit enough to make a splendid crop on the stalks right now, though the cotton has two months to grow. In working this cotton he cultivated about thirty acres to the plow, and used about two and a half tons of Zell's guano to the plow. In addition to his great cotton crop he has 000 acres of corn that will make fif teen to twenty bushels per acre. Then he has harvested a fine oat crop, and will securo a good crop of potatoes and peas, with other side crops. His great crop is cotton, however. He has a sixty-horse-power gin knock ing out twelve bales a day in season, and he keeps the railroad hot hauling his crop to Americas. A Sad Death. Mr. Homer Scaife, engineer on the construction train of the Georgia and Albany Construction Company, died at Hurtsboro, Ala., on the S. A. «fc M. road, on Monday morning last. He was a young man of sterling qualities, a good engineer, and well liked by all of his comrades. He had just passed his twenty-first birthday, and was a fine specimen of manhood. Ilis death is in deed a sad one, as he died away from home, although loving hands adminis tered to his wants and tenderly cared for him in his last hours. for Infants and Children. ItHM* IU1I To-day.
