Mr. Bell \\ill return to Americus on September 1, in time to handle the fieecy staple. The familiar form of Mr. John M. Green of Atlanta was seen upon our streets yesterday. Mr. Green is always a welcome visitor to Americus. He re ports the Americus Guano Company in fine shape. Managers Dunlap and Har per are the right men in the right place. Mr. Stephen S. Shipps, of the Georgia Loan A* Trust Company, will leave to night on a visit to his former home, Bor- dentown, New Jersey. His brother, Mr. Shipps, paymaster of the S. A. & M. railroad, will join him in a few days. These gentlemen have made many frieuds in our city who wish them a pleasant visit and a safe return to the home of their adoption. In the Old Seventeenth District. Sumter County. ^ cry many persons in our own county are entirely ignorant of the fertility and beauty of this charming portion of our county, and the excellent husbandry of the citizens. I am sure I was until re cently, when I had occasion to make a visit to this section. Every crop I saw was unmistakably promising. I mention those of J. M. Bird, M. I Logan, the Davidson Bros., John E. Thomas, Ed Zimmerman and Henry Williams. Besides these there were others wor thy of note. Mr. Bird has oa hand now fifty bales of old cotton, 1,000 bushels of last year’s corn and 1,000 bushels of new oats. I saw many acres, of cotton that lam sure will make a bale to the acre, hav ing already three-fourths of a bale on the crop. The corn was simply magnificent, and will easily run from fifteen to forty bushels to the acre. The old seventeenth is booming, and will rank with the best in the county or state. I found the irrepressible Capt. Jim Ross working vigorously to preparb an exhibit for Sumter county at the ap proaching state fair. On this line the captain knows no such word as fail, and judging from what I saw on his farm I am confident ho will surpass all bis former displays. It is to bo regretted he is not more liberally aided by his fellow citizens and neighbors in his per sistent endeavors to bold up the name and reputation of old Sumter. By the way, I could not, whilo looking on the glovious prospects of the farmers, repress the thought that there was no necessity, at least in the old seventeenth, for any complaints about hard times. J. C. Roney, I\ M. Americus, July 20, 1801. A Correction. In an article yesterday, the statements of which were given to The Times-Re- cobdeh by a gentleman from Richland who was an eye witness of the occur rence, an error was made, in that it was said that the rules of the S., A. & M. railroad conflicted will the municipal regulations of Richland, whereby the engineer was fined for blowing his whis tle inside the limits of that town. From the officials of the S., A. & M. railroad the information is obtained that the rules of railroads ou this subject are fixed by the state law, which, while provid ing for engineers blow’ing signals at all posts on the lines, specially excepts the ncorporated cities and towns, and pro vides for ringing engine bells instead. A special rule of the 8. A. & M. rail road provides that tho whistle shall not be blown within tho corporate limits of Americus, Cordeleand Richland, and the engineer in question was really acting, it is claimed, in violation of tho rules of the road instead of in accordance with them, when lie blew the bla^s which re sulted in his being fined $25. It is claimed by the mayor of Richland that the tine was not excessive, in view of the fact that the city authorities were defied, and that ho was urged by many to make the lino *75 or $100, tho full limit allowed, because of tho course pur sued by the cngiucer. Whatever bo tho result of the contro versy between the authorities of|Kichland and tho engineer, upon which The TiMES-llEcoimEit does not propose to pass judgment, it is proper to stato tlu\t the railroad is in no wise # responsible for what occurred by virtuo of any rule compelling the blowing of signals. July 28,1891, tf. Correction. In our issue of yesterday an error occurred in the article descriptive of Col. C. C. Clay’s [plantation. One para graph reads as follows: “He has 1,000 acres in cotton, from which lie will get 500 bales. Two hundred acres of that, according to the opinion of expert cot ton men, will go over 200 bales.” The first lines should have read: “He has 1,000 acres in cotton, from which he will get 500 bales.” Not “1,000” acres, etc. For a pleasant shave go to Dr. El! dridge’s and buy one of those celebrrtea Tower Razors wbich are guaranteed to please.
