JOHN B. SHAW
Montgomery Folsom, of the Atlanta
Journal, hae been spreading himself all
over Sumter county recently, and en
lightening the readers of the Journal
on the beauties of this region. Although
a little “off” on some points (as to the
birthplace of Sam Houston, for instance)
in the main “Stumpy” Is about correct/
Here are a few of his observations about
DeSoto aod its vicininlty:
The old Furlow place is a twenty-two
mule farm, 500 acres 'n cotton and 250
In corn. The bottom will yield an aver
age of over a bale to two acres, and the
corn will go twenty bushels to the acre,
Mr. J. J. Cocke, a native Georgia boy, is
manager of this farm, and to him may
bo attributed much of its success.
The Williams place, adjoining, is
twelve-mule farm, 300 acres in cotton
and 100 in corn. Mr. J. W. Powell,
thorough going young farmer, is mana
ger of this place, tlio crops in which arc
fully equal to those on the Furlow place,
.Connected with the same interest is
the Lee place, ton miles south, Tin eiglit-
mtilo farm, 230 acres in cotton, 100 in
corn; Mr. F. II. Jtinos, manager; and the
Homo place, ton miles north, a six-mule
farm, 150 acres in cotton and 50 in corn
John Jenkins, manager.
All these farms belong to the Araeri
cus Investment Company, of which Mr.
Armstead Dodson is general' superin
tendent, anil which company has built
up DeSoto.
In 1**7 tile company purchased S,000
acres of land here, taking in some of the
finest farming lands in the county, on
which the town was located. It is about
one mile square, and has keen surveyed
and the streets laid out, leaving a ten-
acre reserve for a beautiful park.
The DeSoto hotel was built at a cost
of *2,000. It a beautiful building, two
stories high, and contains ten rooms. It
is now kept by Mrs. Sloan, a lady who
takes special pains to please her guests,
and is the breakfast point for the Sam
road.
A handsome academy building two
stories high was built at a cost of $2,500-
In addition to a flourishing school, the
upper story is used as a hall by the Ma
sons, of which fraternity there Is a very
prosperous lodge here.
There are six stores and a handsome
depot, express, telegraph and post of
fices.
Thera is a large Daptist congregation,
which will build a church shortly; nnd
tho Methodists will proceed at once to
erect a handsome building. This is the
DeSoto I found here.
Mr. Dodson is going to develop into a
great benefactor. His scliemo is ona
that is not only feasible and practicable,
but is in the nature of a progressive
movement that will benefit tho country
and the people alike.
There are also several industries es
tablished here. Messrs. Luke A- Hays
havo a large lumber mill and planing
mill with a capacity of 20,000 foet a day.
They are also doalers In rough and
dressed lumber, moulding and building
material, making n specialty of kiln
dried lumbor.
Their planing mills, with two largo
planers, have a capacity of 15,000 feet
daily. Mr. J. H. McKinnon Is In chargo
of these. Ho is one of the most skilled
machinists In this section, and has won
for himself a well deserved reputation
for proficiency. He was born in Quit-
man, Ga., of one of the best families of
tho place, and Is very highly respected
by .all who know him.
Messrs. Luke & Hays also do a large
mercantile business, *10,000 to *15,000 a
year, which Is under tho management of
Mr. W. G. Session, a young gentleman
of the ilnest busipcss qualifications, who
enjoys the respect and confidence of all
who know him.
There is also a grist mill and ginnery,
and a new company is being formed,
with a capital stock of $3,000, to build
another right in tho heart of town.
These industries give employment to
quite a Dumber of people, and all aro
thriving and doing good business.
§paco will not permit a notice of all
the various Industries of this thriving
town. Suffice It to say that it enjoys
good health, good wator and a superb
location right In the heart of one of the
finest agricultural sections in the state
of Georgia,
Mr. Dodson's plan of selling off the
land into small farms is a winning one,
and when fully carried out will prove a
solution of the land and labor questions
that have been such drawbacks to the
full and tree development of the country
heretofore.
Farm en settling on these lands will
enjoy every social and educational ad
vantage of a town, and yat will he Inde
pendent of the tows for their -support,
as the lands are to fertile that a fifty-
acre tract will amply eupport a Urge
