' Last evening, at about 0 o’clock, the first bale of the season was captured by that energetlo warehouseman, Hr. L. G. Council, who secured the flrit bale of cotton last year August 2. Hr. C. 0. Clay is the planter who land ed the winning bale. Thle much prised first bale waebought by the well-known firm of Littleton A Lamar for 0} eente. ThSee are tbeoold facta In regard to an event which ls always looked forward to every season with the greatest inter- eat; but who can toll of the etruggle on the part of all concerned to come in first under the wire In this laudable contest. Planters, warehousemen, brokers, etc., are all keenly alive at this time to secure the distinguished honor. The hale which arrived last night from Ur. Clay’s place was picked, ginn ed, packed, weighed, and sold In one day. This is a remarkable performance at this time of the year, when the amount of territory gone over Is consid ered. In the opinion of good judges, the time made in landing this bale of cotton in the market beats the record. And the fact that this bale waa hurried through to this point by express shows that nothing was left undone to “get here” ahead of all competitors. After the bale which had been care fully expressed by Mr. Clay to this oity by the S. A. M. railroad passenger train which arrived here about 0 p. ra., and was triumphantly carried to the warehouse of Ur. L. G. Council, and as the shades of night were falling fast, a democratic mule, engineered by a fifteenth amendment from the planta tion of Hr. B. F. Jenkins in Sumter county, entered the city and hauled up, with the usual “whoa" of the driver. The hale brought by Hr. Jenkins’ negro was even at this late hour care fully housed in the warehouse of the veteran and reliable warehousemen, Messrs. Council & MoGarrah. The bale weighed 514 pounds. It was sold to Col. A. S. Cutta forOJ ceqta per pound. A singular coincidence is, that both of these “two first bales" camo from the vi cinity of DeSoto, on the S. A. U. rail way, The negro driving Hr, Jenkins’ bale to the depot missed the freight train whleh passed DeSoto on hour or so before the passenger and express train, upon which Hr. Clay expressed his bale. Ur. Jenkins takes great pleasure in real izing that, whilst his was the first bale really ready for ahipment, and missed the train only byafew minutes, be brought it with his industrious mule, who made the crop, within a few hours of Ur. Clay's, and a much larger bale. The negro chuckles that he got a bettor priee for bis bale. The generous rivalry between such progressive and prosperous farmers aa Hr. Clay and Ur. Jenkins 1* a matter of congratulation to all. The Tiues-Re- corder wishes both success. OLOK Everythin? guaranteed as repre- NO OLD'STUCK! Fresh Goods Every Day.
