Most New Yorkers know very little of
Lookout hill in Prospect park. Brook
lyn except that they occasionally see
some mention of it in the ,it»ws|>npera
One Brooklynite who wan asked for tn-
fonnalion nhont it the other day ile.
scribed it as a place where "fools from
New York go to commit suicide some
times.’'
This description of Lookout hill is
hardly a fair one. It in true, however,
that for some reason men who want to
commit Rnicide do somehow manage
very frequently to drift ont to this pnrt
of Brooklyn's big park to carry out their
intentions. But they don't all of them
go from New York. There have been
two suicides there by Brooklynites. The
two that preceded these, however, were
men from New York, and of the many
prior to these Brooklyn may bo charged
with tlie most of them.
One stormy, snowy day a wpII dressed
yonng man hired a cab in this city and
was driven rapidly over the bridge to
Brooklyn and out to Prospect, park.
When the cab reached t he city line the
yonng innn got ont tmd sent It hark to
New York. Then lie went into a saloon
near by. He left tile saloon, entered the
park, walked through the driving snow
to tlie summit of Lookout hill und there-
shot himself.
A policeman heard the shot, and found
the body of the suicide still warm, but
he was dead. Ho bad evidently intended
that there should lie nothing cheap or
vulgar abont tlie nlfair, for even the re
volver used by him wns of the must ex
pensive pattern and make and had been
bought new for tlie purpose. Ho was
identified as a Columbia college student
belonging to a New York family of ex
cellent standing.
KKMAKKARLK ItlKNTIFICATlON.
The suicide before thin was also that
of a New York man, and it attracted
some little attention at the time by rea
son of tlie fact that there wns a mix np
about the identification of tlie body.
This hud lain on tlie hill so long before
it was fonud that it could be identified
only liy tlie clothes on it und by the for
mation of the tiody. It was formally
identllied at the Brooklyn morgtio the
morning It wns found as the body of a
New York printer, who Imd. through
despondency, taken his life.
This identification wns made by two
mem tiers of Typographical Union No. 0.
who had known tlie man. 1 .liter that
day the body was again identified
that of a barber doing business on Third
nvenne in this city, and this identifica
tion was finally found to be correct.
The most curious thing abont this cose
was the physical likeness of tlie printer
and the barber. The barber was de
formed—that is, he Imd u club foot. The
same was trne of the printer, nntl it was
the left foot that was deformed, aa was
tlie case with the barber Tiiey were
physically nlike otherwise. Then the
printer's friends identified tlie clothing,
the shoes mid the bat and even a knife
that was in the pocket of the snicide.
Bat the printer wasn't dead. The
writer knows that, for he reported the
find identification for an afternoon pa-
|ier. the second was made too late for
notice that, day. and in aliont a week
afterward the printer brought anit
against that paper for $20,000 damages
for saying that hu committed snicide.
lie didn't gtd the $20,000, hut he did
prove to the satisfaction of all that he
was very much alive.
A HISTORIC njICE.
But there have been any unmber of
suicides on Lisikout hill. Brooklynites
are inclined to object to the nse tbut Is
made or this picturesque ajiot, und os for
the Prisqiect park ixdice, they more than
object. They constantly patrol the
neighborhood of the bill, nnd uuy lounger
ubout there is sore to have u very care
ful eye kept upon him by the blnecoated
guardians of the park.
Lookont hill is one of Prospect park's
picturesque and historical spots. It la a
high bill looking ont over the big lake
and tho boulevard, and is heavily wood
ed. As a jioint from which to view the
surrounding country it fa unsurpassed.
From its brow you can see for mile* in
all directions. Coney island, Manhattan
beach, and even Far Rockaway, are vis
ible to the naked eye. Flutbtub nnd
other towns nestling down among the
trees, nnd the ruruis stretching out over
the level country, present n line scene at
this season.
General Washington used this very
hill to make observations from when he
wns holding Brooklyn nnd watching for
the expected landing of Sir Henry Clin
ton on Long Island. It waa from here
that the American generals watched
Clinton's movements when preparing Tor
the disastrous lurttleof Long Island Hint
resulted in tlie retreat of Washington to
the heights above the Harlem and gave
New York city Into tlie hands of Sir
Henry Clinton.
The tide of Imttle swept nil aronnd the
hill and in the green field lielow it good
blood stained the sward.
Bnt times have changed. Battles nre
still fonght in the Held below Lookont
hill—the shmn battles of the Brooklyn
militia. And tlie bill Itself is no longer
visited by great generals. Those who
want to commit snicide go there instead.
