One explanation of the low prices ft cotton, in addition to that of the tint! pec ted ly large crop, is the depression i those manufacturing sections of Kuroj which use most of our cotton, caused h the prohibition of Imported goods to 11 United Mates from these districts froi the operation of the McKinley bill. The manufacturing districts of f:<?i many, which use more cotton than an The returns from 115 counties in fieor-; gia show an increase of fourteen million j dollars during the past year. On Thursday night the Aliiaucenicu of the Legislature met in caucus to hold an inquest over the “stay hill;” and the result was that only three men of the whole body bad the hardi hood to speak out in meeting in behalf of this iniquitous measure. Whatever may be said as to the views of the Alliance members of the Legisla ture on some other questions, they are as sound as a dollar on the stay law sub ject; and their action will do much to reassure the doubting and restore con fidence. A more summary setback to anarchis tic principles hasn't been given siuce the law dealt with the bomb throwers of the Chicago llaymarket massacre. Let the people of Georgia take cour age, and return thanks that the state has been saved from disgrace and ruin by the emphatic repudiation by Alliance- men in the Legislature of a measure that would have pro veil a veritable Pan dora box of ills unnumbered to every body in Georgia. MEXICAN JOURNALISM This is what The Constitution says of Mexican journalism: Twenty-nino daily papers are pub lished in Mexico City, and they are iu every way typically Mexican. These morning papers are printed the after noon before the date of publication. It is a common thing to hear the newsboys crying, “Here’s your to-morrow’s pa per!” and the next morning they are still soiling the same papers The writers and printers on these dailios cannot be induced to work at night. They do not appreciate the im portance of news, and their readers are the samo way. Telegrams are frequent ly laid over two or three days until they are well seasoned, but editorials, essays and literary miscellany appear without delay. The Mexicans feel a contempt for what we call news. With them ideas are given the preference. Political news is well enough, but their newspa pers are not going to bother about hunting up the facts of a big murder case. They prefer to wait until the murderer has time to call at the office and give his own version of the matter. HATCHING THE THIRD PARTY. Tho writer of this article has recently visited and converted with alliancemen from various sections of Georgia, and we found everywhere a regular ground- swell in favor of our organisation nomi nating a national ticket of its own. The farmers fully rcalizo the fact that our western brethren will never vote for a Democrat, it matters not on how strong a platform he is placed, while, of course, the southerners will not support a Re publican. So far as state politics are concerned, the alliance is tho Democrat- ( Athens is not inclined to give up the Mate Agricultural College without a ifitfbt. The mayor ami council have taken a hand, and brings to light the I fact that Athens gave the state &&,000 | f«»r the location of the college in that ! city, and they don’t think it is exactly right to take it away from them. The finding of a “blind tiger” in the capitol, which is an especial pet of a number of eminent legislators, bids fair to create a ruckus in that distinguished body. A legislature passing prohibition laws and harboring a “blind tiger” in the shadows of the state capitol is cer tainly a novel thing to contemplate. The patrons of this “blind tiger” should be known, and an investigation will not be out of order.—-Columbus Enquirer- Sun. Speaking for tho melon growers, the Albany News and Advertiser says that the state of feeling among the planters is decidedly against the future cultiva tion of the melon. It says further: “it is a crop that has paid-in the past, and tho general feeling among the grow ers the past spring was that the crop had been worked up to such a point that it would be a profitable one. It has been thought in this section that tho melon was a fruit that is always in demand in the summer in the northern markets. The gradual losses for the past two or three years, ending this summer in almost a total loss to the grower, has shaken his confidence iu this crop, and he is now almost per suaded to abandon the culture.” Wooldridge’* Won- rough trial, I can cheerfully r offering w1th Liver trouble*. .. ...... good than a barrel of to-called remedies, and 1 feel like a new man. The financial ticlea of The I (institution are among the very best that appear; and while Tins Timis-Hkcobukb does not always endorse all that Is taken from its con temporaries, it would appear from tbe omission above referred to that the arti cle was designed as an expression of tbe views of this paper. The correction is cheerfully made, as there was no inten tion of stealing Editor Howell's finan cial thunder. The material point of difference between Tiie Tisiks-Hkcokd eh and The Constitution is that wherein the latter favors a state bank currency that is local in its nature, and not avail able in all parts of the country, The Tiukh-Rkcobdkr wants a currency in ail respects similar to national bank and treasury notes, in so far as concerns its absolute security. The next congress meets in Decem ber, and the t yes of every AUianccman in America wiil be turned upon tho Democratic house of representatives. Let that body endorse every piank in the Ocala platform, and pass bills according ly, and the Alliance will fight its battles under the Democratic banner.
