JOHNS. SHAT?
Something of a sensation wax created
here yesterday by the arrival of Mr.
Robert E. McElroy, from Cordele, In the
custody of a Dooly county deputy
sheriff.
It was ascertained that he was arrest
ed on a charge similar to that for which
Steve Ryan of Atlanta was arrested. In
fact, Mr. McElroy's esse is a parallel
one to the Ryan case, except as to the
amounts involved.
Mr. McElroy Is a young .man about 20
years of age, having been raised in
Americus, where he lived up to about
one year ago, when be went to Cordele
to accept the agency of the Southern
Express Company at that place. He
was known hero as a very energetic, up-
right, and thorough going business
young man, and he kept up bis good
reputation In Cordele, where lie had the
conflJence and good will of everybody
until recently.
Resides attending to the express busi
ness in a very effieient manner, he carried
on a fanoy and family grocery business,
which seemed to thrive.
On account of his promptness, cour*
tesy, and jovial disposition, Bob McElroy
was the pet of the town. To most peo
ple his business seemed to run smoothly
aDd prosperously, till August 4, when
McElroy's stock of groceries was placed
In the hands of a receiver.
Eleven days afterward the people of
the town were again surprised when it
became known that Bob MeElroy was
arrested on an order from the circuit
judge for contempt of court, in refusing
to turn over some assets which the re
ceiver claimed he still had In his pos
session.
Mr. McElroy was guarded by the dep
uty-sheriff, and continued discharging
his duty as express agent until to-day,
when he came here, accompanied by
Deputy Yeomans, Receiver Scott and
Col. Littlejohn, to answer before Judge
Fort to a charge of contempt.
The plaintiff’s attorney showed, by
documentary evidence, that defendant
owed oxer $1,800 on July 1, and that he
had paid only $10 on the same up to the
time the receiver took charge of his
Business. It was further shown that on
August 1 defendant got $100 from the
First National Bank, and about ten days
before the appointment of a receiver his
stock amounted to $900 or $1,000; but
.when the receiver took charge only
about $400 worth of stock was found.
And It was shown that defendant had a
hone when the receiver was appointed,
which was sent here.
Col. Hooper answered for defendant,
that the goods were all turned over to
the receiver, and showed bow the $100
obtained from the bsnk was applied to
paying bis debts.
In regard to the horse, defendant
claimed that the receiver had made no
special demand for the hone, and as be
did cot need him, he sent him here, but
was ready to return the horso and $200
in money which ho had collected for the
business. — ■ '
After short arguments by the counsel,
Judge Fort ordered Mr. MeElroy to de
liver the hone to the receiver at Cordele,
and the small sum of money he admit
ted ho had, and pay all costs In the case.
Besides, McElroy was ordered to give a
small bond for his appearance at the
next term of Dooly superior court, to
answer for the other assets which plaint*
iff alleges McElroy has not turned over.
From what information can be gath
ered now.lt appears that McElroy’s lia
bilities amount to $2,100 or $2,200, and
his assets about $700; amount duo se
cured credlton about $500.
It is thought by many that McElroy’s
failure was due to stealing by negroes,
and boys he had employed, together
with bad management. Otlicn think it
was a premeditated fraud.

Notice
The patrons of The Tixks-Kecomier
are urged to pay promptly the bills
which are now due for subscription, ad-
vertising and job work for the past
month. A newspaper has to pay its
labor the cash weekly, aud on the first
the month It is necessary for all its
bills to lie promptly collected.
The current expenses of The Times-
KecobdeR establishment are about $50
per day, which must be paid every
Monday without fail or delay.
We are therefore compelled to press
collections; and while the small bills
that some owe may cause them to re
gard the matter as insignificant, these
small acoounts aggregate several thou
sand dollars, which we are compelled to
collect promptly to meet our obligations,
A newspaper can't run a week with
out money; so come up to the captain’s
office and settle.
