THE FREEDOM OF THE PRESS.
From time to time, in the history of
our country, there have been attempts
to muzzle tbe press, and in every in
stance the attempt lias been so effectu
ally squelched by tho people that it is
surprising any man, or set of men, would
bo so silly as to hazard such an unwise
undertaking.
Tho latest effort in this direction took
place recently in our own State I.cgisla-
The Macon County Citizen fears that
Oglethorpe will get loRt, and wants a
plat of the town made at once and put
on record. There has been no plot of
the town since the court house was
burned several years ago.
The Madisonian reports that R, K.
Jones, a promineut farmer of Morgan
county, had his throat badly cut in
Madison Saturday night and refuses to
state who did the cutting. Mr. Jones
had a narrow escape from deatn.
Mr. II. H. Furlow has retired from the i
Madisonian and Mr. C. M. Furlow, Jr.,
has assumed the entire control of the j AtlSOlUtOlV PUfOs
paper. The Madisonian ranks with the j tartar baking powder,
best weekly newspaper* of the state, and j g T
Mr. Furlow will keep it up to its present j junel^ dawlyr
standard. !

■deviate from wliat is recognired as par
liamentary language. Tbe editorial con-
'tainod not a single abusive word, and it
-did Dot impugn tbe honor or integrity
of a single member of the house.
*‘ln the course of the debate, yester
day, it soon became apparent to tho
members ol tbe house that the editorial
complained of c-ould not, with any show
of justice or reason, be successfully at
tacked, and the resolution was therefore
tabled. Bat it toon developed that the
ill humor of tome of the members was
due to tbe fact that thoy objected to the
strong language contained in some of tbe
interviews printed in yesterday’s Con
stitution. This did not ehango the sta
tus of the ease. It is the business of a
newspaper to print the news, and public
opinion concerning . the public acts of
our legislature is most undoubtedly legit
imate news, if there is such a thing. The
Constitution never suppresses public
opinion. It gives it a place in its col
umns wliothor It suits tho paper or not;
whotlier it agrees with us, or differs
with us, or abuses us. Our rendors had
aright to know what the peoplo thought
of the rejection of the Confederate
Home, and wo gave the news.
“A word In conclusion. We trust that
the Georgia legtalature has wltnesssd
for the last time an unwise attempt to
throttle the press, or to abridge its
legitimate freedom. The Constitution
has not attacked tbe motives, or ques
tioned tbe Integrity or tho honor of aoy
member of tbo goners! aaaembly in this
matter, but it will always stand ready to
reaffirm and reiterate every word and
statement contained in Its editorial of
yesterday.
“A word In conoluiUn about the legis
lature. It would bo impossible for aoy
ono, who knows penonally those who
composo It, not to appraclste the sin
cerity and tbe honesty of its members.
The bouse is composed of an earnest,
straightforward sot of men, who do
tbelr duty as they think best. We differ
with thorn In tbelr disposal of the con
federate homo bill. This, however, doe>
not mean that wo question their honesty
of purpose.
“The people will take care of the
home!”
Mu. Kobxbt Sims of Choctaw county,
Alabama, seems to be an original kind
of religious teacher. IIo rejects all hu
man authority, takes his own exposition
of the Bible a* infallible, and conducts
an illicit still. Uls followers are well
armed and mighty militant, the Juice of
tho corn being porliaps one of
tbeir main sources of valor. They arc
ready to load with lead any representa
tive of the authority of the law. On the
whole the Choctaw philosopher seems to
possess iu a certain degree the curious
combination, rather irreverently men
tioned by Byron, of rum and true relig
ion. Tbo whisky is illicit and the relig
ion is false; but presumably Mr. .Sims
supposes it to be truo.
Mu. McKinley had a good deal to say
the other day about silver, and declared
that the farmers would not have a silver
dollar worth only 80 cents; but never
theless there aro thousands of farmers
In this country who fully appreciate the
fact that tha dollar that they are being
paid to-day for tbelr wheat and corn is
wuiih only 80 cents, and that the Re
publican party la responsible for the
coinage of such a dollar; consequently
they an more than half disposed to sup
port the demand that (Urer be coined
on a parity with gold.
A poorly dressed man had called at tho
Burlington office in St. Joo, inquired for
the travelling passenger agent, explained
that the poor clothes concealed one of
the bandits of fifteen years ago, pro
duced a check for (<J0, asked that It be
forwarded, and disappeared. “Bis
Identity is a mystery,” so ho must have
used a cashier’s check. Uls poverty of
dress is of course due to efforts, at
length crowned with success, to raise
«J0 in fifteen years. The Interest would
have amounted to more than the princi
pal, but let us not ask too much of a
bandit making restitution. It was
thoughtful of him to send the principal
after keeping It so long.
CiiABLfcsTO* Is the most wonderful
and remarkable city in all the land,
Although shaken up by a terrible earth
quake, thousands of dollars of Its prop
erty destroyed, its business has never
been materially affected and there are
no signs of that terrible calamity now
visible. The News and Courier says:
With the largest cotton receipts In Its
history, with Its fertilizer manufactur
ing and phosphate mining industries,
already vaal in proportions, greatly In
creased, with numbers of new and pros
perous enterpriiaa safely launohed and
afloat, with a year of bleated healthful-
ness, with Its wholesale and retail gro
cery and dry goods trade Increasing and
sound, Charleston In 1801 has taken a
step forward which may be envied by
any of its competitors.”
Op all tbe novel propositions made In
these times of new and untried plans,
the one from a negro In North Carolina
takes the cake. He proposes to ran for
Congress next year on a platform of hla
own making and of only one plank,
which Is “that Congress should pay at
the rate of (300 per head for the 4,000,-
000 slaves freed “as a war measure"
during the civil war. Of the (300, two-
thirds, It is proposed, shall go to tbe ex-
master and the other third to the ex
slave. It would cost (1,200,000,000, but
2 per cent fifty-year bonds could he is
sued to raise that amount.

Mu. Ciiauxcky Depew, now in Eu
rope, has said that the Blaine resolution
passed by the Pennsylvania Republican
convention “expresses the tinauimous
opinion of the Republican party through
out the country.” Tho only friends Mr.
Harrison has left seem to be tho office
holders and those party bosses with
whom ho has made a contract of patron
age for votes.
A San Francisco paper proposes that
the Republicans nominate Senator Stan
ford for president because ho is out of
accord with the professed principles of
the party and is a millionaire. This is
based on the conclusion that the only
hope the Republicans havo of winning
in the next election is to repudiate their
principles and spend money freely.
A Northwest girl has just shot a ne
gro for following her home and insult
ing her. This plucky girl has set an
example which, if followed, may do
much to abate a growing evil, the
remedy for which the southern legisla
tures have found It difficult to hit upon.
It docs no harm to say that our es
teemed contemporary, Tbe St. Louis
Republic, shows a tendency to contem
plate in a spirit of reasonableness tbe
election of Hon. Cbas. F. Crisp of Geor
gia to tbe Speakership.—New York Son.
