FALLING INTO LINE.
From Canada to the ltlo Grande the
political outlook for the people is cheer
ing. At no timo in the past thirty years
has the Democratic party throughout
tbo country been in better shapo for vic
tory than now. It's thorough organiza
tion in the East has only caused the Re
publicans to view with dismay its in
creasing power, and the fact that it will
holdall of the old States, including the
Solid South, is a feature of the greatest
Importance,
Everything is shaping up for tl o cam
paign of ltoilg, which promises to be one
of the most exciting and eventful years
in tlie political history of the country.
The lines will be rigidly drawn on the
tariff, and this will be the ruling issue,
as the silver question will be settled by
the present Congress, and this done,
that will bo eliminated from the contest.
f Then, with Cleveland, probably, as tin
exponent of tariff reform for the Demo
cratic party, and Harrison, in all proha.
bllity, representing tlio robber tariff for
the Republican party, who can doubt the
resuliP Jtr. Cleveland would be t!
overwhelming choice of the country.
The Alliance, should they make a
nomination, might carry two or three
states, but these would weaken the Re
publicans. The Solid South would sure
ly go with the party that has been Its
life long friend and advocate.
The promising cotton crop of a few
weeks ago has been greatly diminished
by heavy rains, followed by excessively
hot weather, which caused the fruit to
shed.—Abbeville Times.
The city council of Rochelle have cap
tured several blind tigers recently and
the Recorder of that place thinks of
starting a menagerie If It can make
arrangements with the council to secure
the animals. They are mostly of a dark
color with woolly beads.
The lice planters on the coast are
wearing smiling faces just now. They
were rather depressed last week, when
it seemed as If the rains would continue
until the rice was hurt. But the weather
cleared in good time for harvesting, and
now the prospects for a big yield arc ex
cellent.
Burglars have hyen getting in their
work at Reynolds the past week. They
entered two stores, but only secured
two dollars at one and seven at the
tlier. At the latter place they took
the safe out half a mile from town and
bmke it open. The seven dollars barely
paid them for their trouble.

It Is beginning to be noticed that one
pound of hog moat Is worth two pounds
of cotton. Our farmers of the South are
waking up to the fact that this explains
the Independence of Western farmers.
When our home people ralso their own
••hog and hominy,” they can he Inde
pendent too.
While the farmers of the West snap
their lingers at Wall street money bro
kers, llio farmers of tho South aro sup
plicating for financial help.
There is no reason why our farmers
shouldn't rulso all they need as well
ns cotton. It Is to bo hoped that our far
mers will see tills lu its true lightsome
day in tho near future.
TURN ON THE LIGHTS,
There Is a good deal of complalntfrom
tho trarcllng public Just now about the
inconveniences at Hie Central nopot at
night. The complaint la that tho front
door of tho depot ia kept locked after
night, mid people who go tlicro to take
till! train ale compelled to mako their
way around the platform ovor trunks
and isixes to.llio rear door before they
-can get to thu waiting room, and that,
too, without any light.
Tab Timks-Rkcohdkb has been re
quested to call tho attention of tho ufll
ciala to this matter with the hope that s
hint would effect the desired relief.
Tukbe it an effort In some quarters
to create the Impression that times re
main dull, despite the big crops, be
cause of an apprehension that things
may be upset by free silver coinage.
That's all bosh. No ono knows better
than those who circulate such reports
that Harrison's veto would be certain to
kill a free coinage bill passed by the
next congress. Free coinage will not
come until 1894. A president and a
congress of that faith will be elected In
November, 180k’, but the president will
not take his seat until March, 1803, and
the congress will not convene until the
Decomber following. In the usual
course of political events, It doesn't
seem that It will be possible to get a free
coinage bill Into operation before the
beginning of 1804, though It Is certain
to oorne about that time. This is only
September, 1801, and several fortuucs
might l>e made by a judicious use of
money before there could be any possi
ble eause to be alarmed about free sil
ver coinage. Those who have raised
th.s cry do so In order to fight the free
coinage sentiment.
Tub census shows the aggregate value
of real and personal property in the
United States to he 802,010,000,000. This
would he about f.',000 for every live per
sons, or that much for each family. An
equal division would make everybody
comfortable and do away with tho pau
pers and the milllouaires. But iu fire
years after tho milennial arrangement
had been made the same inequalities iu
wealth that now exist would be ob
served.
supply It Is still a debatable question
which the statisticians are unable to de
cide. Mr. William E. Bear of London,
who has quite a reputation as a com
piler of facts and figures, had a letter in
the last number of Brndstreet's In which
ho argued, with a fair show of reason,
that Russia will export little or no
wheat this year. This is In mainten
ance of an opinion ho had formerly ex
pressed to the same effect. In the samo
issue of tho samo journal, Mr. S. E.
Bcerbobn of London, who is no less an
authority on such subjects than Mr.
Bear, reviews tbo situation and con
cludes that Russia is likely to export
40,000,000 or more bushels of whoat
within the year. These different esti
mates, taken in connection with the fact
that no certain figure haa been fixed os
to the amount of wheat grown in the
Uuitcd States this year, render the fu
ture prico of grain uncertain. Nothing
is definite except that a big crop has
been raised in this country and the crop
In Europo Is very short.
Tub Republican State Convention of
New York will meet on September 10,

Republicans want tho postprandial

A it Kit Mr. Edward Atkinson had
ilnlshed reading his paper before tho
American Association for tho Advance

that tho silver dollar bo stripped of its

tion offered expressing agreement with
his views. It Is a gratifying as well as
significant fact that this resolution
